Aims and Learning Outcomes

This half day course is recommended for school staff who have had no previous Language and Communication training.

It aims to provide participants with: • An introduction to language development from birth throughout childhood. • An understanding of the different components of language and how these are interdependent. • An understanding of further training provided by Language and Communication Service and

assist with planning the most appropriate training plan for individual settings. There will also be opportunities to engage in practical workshop activities, exploring strategies and resources to support language development within the classroom.

Aims and Learning Outcomes • To have a wider understanding of some of the challenges inherent in Numeracy and how

working with a multi-sensory approach such as Numicon can help children with SEN meet these challenges.

• To appreciate the essential building blocks that underpin key mathematical concepts. • To consider how to start working with a multi-sensory approach such as Numicon with children

with Down syndrome. • To use the Numicon shapes and other practical resources successfully in the classroom. • To explore the benefits of using Numicon with children with Down syndrome to teach key

mathematical areas including rote counting, one to one correspondence, simple addition/subtraction, decomposition, multiplication, division and introducing money.

Aim and Learning Outcomes

This facilitative workshop aims to provide staff with a solution focussed approach to support Social, Behavioural, Emotional and Well-Being (SBEW) within a busy classroom. Staff will be provided with a structure to enable them to reflect on underlying and interacting factors in relation to SBEW. In addition staff will have the opportunity to develop, reflect and utilise their skills and experience formulating a cohesive planned approach during this interactive workshop. This workshop may be of particular relevance to staff supporting young people with SBEW at Stage 5 COP.

Aim and Learning Outcomes

This is a broad training course designed to touch on a number of relevant areas, ranging from the impact on neural processes, the permanency of online participation, social media and self-esteem, new risks to young people and the impact on social interaction skills and relationships. The main purpose of this training course is psychoeducation – to provide staff with a range of information in this complex, new and rapidly-changing area. Towards the end, we look at ways in which we can begin to support young people with this modern problem, however attendees should be aware that the focus is primarily psycho-education, with plans for a follow-up session in the future with a greater emphasis on practical supports. • To understand why digital use impacts us and how. • To explore and understand the idea of ‘Digital Addiction’. • To understand the impact on young people. • To begin to explore ways we can support students with these growing issues.

Aim and Learning Outcomes

Aim • To identify planning, preparation and collaboration considerations for SEN pupils moving into,

between and out of educational settings. Objectives • To discuss the role of the Learning Continuum in schools and resources to use with parents

(including Access Arrangements resources for parents in post primary). • To explore practical approaches to supporting effective transitions at different stages in the

education process. • To share current good practice for transitions in schools. • To highlight available transition support services and useful documentation to use with pupils

with SEN. • To identify ways in which pupils and parents can be involved in the transition planning process. • To ensure that all SEN Co-ordinators are aware of their duties which contribute to the overall

effectiveness of their role in school.

Aim and Learning Outcomes

Getting Ready to Learn provides support for DE funded pre-school settings to help them develop parents’ confidence and skills to ensure their children grow up happy, healthy and achieve to their full-potential. Settings are encouraged to hold information sessions, workshops and stay and play sessions to give parents the knowledge and tools to create positive home learning environments. Support is provided through a central team, a dedicated website and on-going clusters/ workshops to explore themes and approaches to delivery of messages. All DE funded pre-school settings are encouraged to participate.

Aim and Learning Outcomes

AIMS: • To enable designated and deputy designated teachers to have an understanding of child

protection and safeguarding issues; • To equip designated and deputy designated teachers with the knowledge and skills required to

apply relevant child protection legislation, policies and procedures to their day to day practice. OBJECTIVES: Day 1 • Become familiar with the principles, legislation policies and guidance underpinning

safeguarding and the relationship between safeguarding and child protection. • Recognise the signs and symptoms of physical, sexual, emotional abuse, neglect and

exploitation. • Increase awareness of specific safeguarding issues such as domestic violence, child sexual

exploitation and E –safety and recognise safeguarding issues for children with increased vulnerabilities.

• The roles and responsibilities of designated teachers, the safeguarding team, Board of Governors, EA CPSS and ETI.

Day 2 • Through the use of a case study become familiar with the following. • Case management reviews. • Challenges for children and professionals in managing disclosures. • Recognising, receiving, responding to and recording activities following a disclosure or

observation of child abuse. • Use of the UNOCINI referral document. • Relationships with our partner agencies and how we communicate with them. • Case conference and decision making. • Recording and record keeping. • Policy development in your school. • Child protection awareness raising for all school staff.

Sub cover is provided to a maximum of £185 per day.
