From Our Pastor What do you think is the fastest growing “religious” group in the U.S.? In recent years, we have seen a big increase in the number of Evangelicals. The Catholic Church is still the largest, and still adds a significant number of new members each year. Neither of these groups, however, is the fastest growing religious group. The single fastest growing group is what Bishop Robert Barron refers to as the “Nones.” The “Nones” are those who choose not to belong to any organized religion. Many are agnostic, some are atheists. As I speak to young people, many of whom seem to be heading towards the “nones,” I find that the single biggest reason for their rejection of organized religion is this: They seem to think that they have to make a choice between believing in God and believing in science. They tend to see religion as being anti-science.

The Catholic Church, far from being an enemy of science, is actually a great promoter of science. Saint Anselm said that Catholic thought was the process of faith seeking to understand. We believe that the more that we understand about our world, the more that we understand about the universe, the more we can come to know about God. Saint Thomas Aquinas said that there is only one truth. That truth is God. Aquinas said that there are two ways to find the truth: One way was through philosophy/theology, he called this the sacred science. The other way was through the traditional sciences. Both avenues lead us to truth, and since there is only one truth, they can never contradict each other. If there seems to be a contradiction, then we do not yet fully un-derstand.

Science is not something to be feared. God gave us a desire to know Him and His creation. God also gave us a mind that is able to question, explore, reason, and understand. Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, and all the sciences exist to help us to explore and understand the world that we inhabit. When we come to under-stand creation, we come to understand God in a deeper way. I hope that we can encourage people, particularly our young people, to use their God given ability to reason. In so doing, they can come to understand their world and their God in a deeper way.

God Bless, Fr. Jack

IS RCIA FOR YOU? There are many reasons why you may want to become involved in the RCIA. Do any of these fit you? I have never been baptized. I am married to a Catholic and attend Mass, but just

don’t know what the next step may be. I have been baptized in another Christian denomina-

tion and wish to become Catholic. I have been baptized Catholic, but have not received

any other sacraments. Do you know someone who might be interested in being in full communion with the Catholic Church? Ask, encour-age, and invite them to this program. The journey begins with one small step! Call Ann Moberg at 508-465-1959 for more information.
