A Message From Your Child and Youth
Program Staff
The Child and Youth Program is gearing up for fall and the
upcoming holiday season! We are beginning to plan our 2nd
annual Drop & Shop Events and are hoping to host these at FIVE
locations this year! We had a great turn out at the three locations
last year and would love to expand our reach in 2014! We also plan
to celebrate Month of the Military Family in November! Please be
sure to watch the upcoming newsletters for all the details
regarding these events! We are very excited about what the
upcoming months have in store for
the Child and Youth Program and
hope that you can enjoy this season
with us!

10/5: World Teacher’s Day; Teachers deserve a little recognition, and some thanks and appreciation. Aside from parents and direct
family, who else has as much influence on the hearts and minds of a child... your child? Teachers not only educate, but they help to
shape and frame your child's beliefs, values, and behaviors. Parents and students are encouraged to offer thanks and recognition today.
A simple "thanks", or card would be greatly appreciated.
10/8: Raising Young Readers; Time: 6-7:30 p.m. Location: Clinton County Courthouse, 100 East State Street, St. Johns, MI 48879.
Contact: Nicole Walker, [email protected] , 989-224-5241. Recent research from the Kids Count data shows that Michigan’s
children are not reading proficiently. Learn about the importance of children reading at grade level by the end of third grade and gain
skills on how to provide literacy rich environments for children. Please email or call Nicole to register. There is a $5 fee for the class,
payable at the door.
10/9: Fire Prevention Day; According to legend, on October 8, 1871, Mrs. O'Leary was in her barn, milking her cow. The cow
kicked over a lamp, which started the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire burned for over 27 hours. The Great Chicago fire sparked
major efforts in fire prevention. Forty years later, the Fire Marshall's Association of North America (FMANA) held the first Fire
Prevention Day. In 1920 , President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Fire Prevention Week.
10/14: Rest Time Refresher: Supporting Military Families in Early Childhood; Time: 1-2 p.m. Location: Webinar. Contact:
Kendra Moyses, 517-432-7654, [email protected]. Connect through your computer and learn about a variety of topics! Sessions
will last 45 minutes with 15 minutes for questions and answers. Military families are in every community in Michigan. Many times
our military families go unnoticed in our communities but they have unique needs and situations that can be met with intentional
planning. Learn about the deployment cycle, how we can help our military families be resilient and existing resources that are
available to support families. Please visit the Rest Time Refresher: Supporting Military Families in Early Childhood registration page
for more information.
10/22: Operation Military Kids Fall Celebration Skating & Pizza Party; See page 7 for all the details
10/25: Operation Military Kids Horse Camp; see page 6 for all the details
10/25: Make a Difference Day; Initiated in 1990, this is a national day is for devoted to helping others by doing volunteer work in the
community. The activity can be almost anything. On this day, millions of Americans participate in community improvement projects.
It takes the form of cleanup, painting, and repair in poorer neighborhoods, parks and municipal facilities. It doesn't matter what
project you take on. It doesn't matter whether you help a non-profit organization, the community, your town, nursing home, a church,
a food kitchen, or any other group in need. What matters is that you participate. Make a commitment to help others for just one day.
