Homelessness

◦ An estimated 1 out of 30 children are homeless in America

◦ About 2.5 million children, with over half being under the age of 6

◦ Homelessness can affect children in many ways:

◦ Lack of school supplies and nutritious food options

◦ As a teacher, it is a good idea to keep extra school supplies and nutritious snacks in your room to send with children that may not have them at home.

◦ At risk of slower development

◦ This leads to a large number of homeless students dropping out

◦ To volunteer or donate to your local homeless shelter, please click here.

Health

◦ Poverty leads to:

◦ Higher infant mortality rate

◦ 60% higher than those above the poverty

level

◦ Chronic illnesses

◦ Like asthma, diabetes, and HIV/Aids

◦ Poor nutrition

◦ Nutritious food is more expensive

◦ Fewer important immunizations

◦ Hepatitis A and B, Diphtheria, measles,

mumps, rubella, Meningococcal, and many

others

◦ And many other complications

◦ Many students that live with the burden

of poverty eventually turn to violence

◦ From 2008-2013 crime rates in areas at or below the poverty level had more than twice as many incidents involving violence that areas above the poverty level.

◦ 40% of children living in poverty are not ready to start primary school

◦ Children below the poverty line are1.3 times more likely to develop learning delays

Personal Hygiene

◦ Think to yourself: “What is more

important, health or hygiene?”

◦ Many people value health over hygiene.

◦ Poorer children may come to school in

the same clothes as the previous day,

dirty, and with odor.

◦ This can make it difficult for others to focus

◦ An experienced teacher at an inner-

city school once told me to keep:

◦ Travel sized deodorant

◦ Disposable toothbrushes

◦ Soap

◦ Germ-x

◦ Disposable combs

And any other sanitary items in your desk drawers for students that may not have access to these materials at home.
