Namaskara.
Happy summer. As we remember Veterans and celebrate Memorial Day, many of you have sent
in your registration form for the upcoming July get together. Those who have not registered,
please do so before June 20 to take advantage of the early bird special. The NASA BOD is busy
putting together a variety of programs for the annual get together. This year’s theme is “Sankethi
Language, Culture and Heritage”. To this end we have planned Children’s Saraswathi pooja,
Sankethi language classes, Sankethi Jeopardy, cooking classes, philosophy discussions and
more. Please see the body of the Chiguru for details.
NASA also honored Padma Bushana Dr. RK Srikantan on May 8th at Glastonbury CT. Many
NASA members enjoyed his music. NASA would like to thank those who sponsored this music program and made it possible.
Smt. Seethalakshmi and Dr. K. Manjunathiah of Bangalore have donated a 50ft by 80ft site to
KSS for the purpose of building a Samudhaya Bhavana (Community Hall). The vision of the
community hall includes facilities to help promote Sankethi Language, Culture, Heritage and
much more. I believe this aligns strongly with NASA’s aims and objectives. Please read the
Chiguru for details of the community hall project. During the GBM on July 3rd, the BOD is
planning to have the KSS president and secretary connect via Skype and address GBM to answer
questions from NASA members. I would like to propose that each family contributes at least
$100/- towards Community Hall in Bangalore. As the saying goes “Hani Koodidare Halla”
(small drops can fill a lake). If all NASA members contribute at least $100/- (or more) we can make a substantial contribution to the Community hall and help establish a center that can
support Sankethi Language, Culture and Heritage. Please donate generously to this cause.
Looking forward to seeing many of you at New Windsor
With best wishes
Yours truly,
NASA President Keshava Kumar & BOD

5. Dr. M.S.Nataraja’s book “The Void and The Womb” Published
Dr. M.S. Nataraja has translated a Kannada novel (“Bayalu-Basiru by Dr. Vasanth Ananth Diwanji)
into English. This book was released on April 30, 2011 in California during a Kannada literary
convention. The central theme of the novel is “self realization.” The main character of the novel is
an American who goes to India during the sixties seeking enlightenment. He faces several challenges
and gets utterly confused but eventually finds a Guru who leads him towards spiritual life. Once he
attains a certain spiritual status, he assumes the name Swami Aniketananda and becomes the head of
an Ashram. His main disciple, Vinayananda uses his talent to expand the Ashram into an
international institution of considerable fame. He attributes miraculous powers to his Guru and
presents him as an incarnation of Buddha. How does Aniketananda really feel? Does he attain enlightenment? You should read the novel to find the answers! The narration style is unique; the entire story is told in the
form of a series of dream sequences and introspections and mental dialogues. The book has been hailed as an excellent
translation by critics and writers such as Prof. Amur, Dr. H.S. Raghavendra Rao and Dr. Sumateendra Nadig, who are
themselves, well-known translators. Want a copy of the book? Please send me an e-mail at [email protected]. The
proceeds of the book (after expenses) will be given to the original author who is bedridden and unable to realize that his book
has been translated and published in English. You may also order (soft-bound --$12, hard-bound --$22 and electronic version --$10) directly from, iUniverse, Inc., 1663,
Liberty Drive, Bloomington, IN 47403, (by mail); www.iuniverse.com (by e-mail); 1-800-288-4677, by phone. In addition,
you may order via Amazon, Books-a-million and Barnes and Noble. If you order by any of the above means, please do let me
know by sending me an e-mail. This is my first attempt at translating a novel into English. You may also use this book as a gift to be given to non-Kannadigas and non-Indian friends who might be interested in knowing something about India, Indian
spirituality and Indian literature (kannada, particularly). If you read the book and would like to give me some feedback, I
would be delighted. – Dr. Nataraja
6. Concert by Padma Bhushan Sri. R.K. Srikantan

10. Proposals to Amend the By-Laws of NASA
The NASA By-Law Committee met several times over the past two years and reviewed the existing NASA by-laws as well as
several changes that had been proposed over the years. The committee prepared a summary of changes to the by-laws and
presented them to the BOD which then discussed the changes. After deliberations, the Board voted to accept the changes to
NASA by-laws. These changes are now being brought before the General Body for a vote. Also, former President Jayashree
Sastry had proposed some amendments which were reviewed by the By-Law committee. Her proposals are also included
below with By-Law committee recommendations.
The changes are divided into sections and the details of the changes are provided in the following pages. The changes for a
section are spread across several by-law articles and all details are provided. The first section of changes to the by-laws are
purely clerical and consist of spelling and grammar corrections, making language gender neutral and other minor changes.
The remaining changes are material and a description of each is provided in the attached spreadsheet. The voting is done per
section. The Proxy Ballot presented below can be mailed in by eligible members who will NOT be present at the meeting.
Please remember to fill out the ballot fully and only select ONE of options A or B. Incomplete ballots cannot be accepted.
The ballot must be received by the Secretary by June 30th
2011.

Member Proposal #1 Proposed by Jayashree Sastry, Past President of NASA Under the current bylaws, all persons appearing on the Association's membership roll as of the record date set for any
membership meeting are entitled to vote at the meeting regardless of their membership category or the period for which they
have been on the membership roll without a break. This may create situations in which votes cast by a volatile section of the
membership base may prove to be the deciding factor on issues with a far reaching impact on the Association's operations.
The objective of the proposed amendment is to limit voting rights to members whose continuing commitment to the
Association is evidenced either by enrollment as Life Members or by uninterrupted annual membership for a couple of years preceding the record date.
Accordingly, the following bylaw amendment is being submitted for your consideration:
Amendment #1-1:
The last sentence of paragraph 4, Section 2, Article III of the Association's bylaws currently reading 'All persons
appearing on such membership roll shall be entitled to vote at the meeting.' shall be expanded to read as follows:
'All persons appearing on such membership roll shall be entitled to vote at the meeting provided they are life
members or have maintained annual membership status during each of the preceding two calendar years.'.
The By-Law Committee recommends you vote AGAINST this proposal. The impact of this proposal would create
another category of membership: a member without voting privileges. The proposal also seeks to prevent an action by annual members that would prove detrimental to the organization. There are, however, very few annual members and the By-Law
Committee feels that the likelihood of such an event is small.
Member Proposal #2 Proposed by Jayashree Sastry, Past President of NASA Under the current bylaws in Section 1, Article IV – Management of the Corporation, there is no reference to the membership
status nor any explicit requirement that such a person must be present at the Annual General Body Meeting at the time of the
election for that person to gain office. There are no other essential qualifiers either. This will open the door for any concerted
attempt by a section of the membership to corner the directorship positions in NASA elections which is detrimental to the
future of NASA. To ensure the election of capable leadership to run the organization, Section 1, Article IV should be
expanded to include following additional qualifiers to run for office:
Amendment #2-1: Members seeking election to the BOD or the Presidency must be present at the GBM at the time
of election Amendment #2-2: Members seeking election to the BOD must be active Life Members.
Amendment #2-3: Members seeking election to the Presidency must be active Life Members.
The By-Law Committee recommends you vote AGAINST #2-1 and #2-2.
The By-Law Committee recommends you vote FOR #2-3.
The By-Law Committee believes that Amendments #2-1 and #2-2 place too many restrictions on those seeking election to
serve NASA. Placing such restrictions is not in the interest of the organization as it would prevent many members from
taking an active role. On the other hand, Amendment #2-3 will ensure that only a member experienced in the operations of
NASA management will assume the Presidency.
