Bellevue East High School January Selecting Next Year’s Courses In the coming weeks, students will start gathering information, receive their registration guide and start thinking about next year. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to consider when selecting courses according to U.S News & World Report: Do create a rigorous – yet balanced – schedule: Students should take challenging classes, such as honors or Advanced Placement courses, but they should balance their schedule with some easier classes, too. Don't take classes for the wrong reasons: Students shouldn't take a class just because their best friend is taking it or it is an “easy A”. Do consider future plans when selecting high school classes: Students should first think through their career plans and whether they want to go to a four-year college, the military or straight to the workforce after graduation. Students should take challenging courses especially if they plan on going to college. Junior and senior year, students should take courses that mirror expectations for what they want to do after high school. Take courses within a specific career pathway of interest. Don't neglect to plan early: Freshmen and sophomores should become familiar with all the courses their school offers and what prerequisites are required. Otherwise, students may miss out on classes they want to take later. Students can also research what the basic requirements are for colleges they are interested in attending – something school counselors could help with. 1 Upcoming Dates 2/13 Parent/Teacher Conferences 4:00-7:45 PM 2/14 Parent/Teacher Conferences 4:00-7:45 PM 2/15 No School 2/18 Prof Development (no students) Jr/Sr Newsletters Monthly newsletters for juniors and weekly newsletter for seniors can be found at the Bellevue East link under “Newsletter”. Selecting Next Year’s Courses

In the coming weeks, students will start gathering information, receive their registration guide and start thinking about next year. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to consider when selecting courses according to U.S News & World Report:

Do create a rigorous – yet balanced – schedule: Students should take challenging classes, such as honors or Advanced Placement courses, but they should balance their schedule with some easier classes, too.

Taking an AP Class

If your child is thinking of enrolling in an AP class, here are some things to consider about the benefits of taking an AP course.

1. Students have more time to take other courses in college. It might be easier for students to pursue a double major or minor or take elective courses that interest them if the college that they attend substitutes high AP test scores (3 or better usually) for course credits.

2. Develop college level academic skills. Enrolling in AP courses enables students to develop more rigorous study habits and take on more challenging course work that parallels what they might see in college level courses. AP courses build critical thinking skills while working on their ability to collaborate in groups.

3. Increases eligibility for some scholarships. Approximately 31 percent of colleges and universities will consider a student's AP course work when making decisions about which students will receive scholarships.

4. Increases college interest for a student. Taking an AP course can also help students boost their GPA and gives one additional factor for colleges or universities to look at when students apply for college or for scholarships. Approximately 85 percent of selective colleges and universities reported that they looked at whether or not a student had taken an AP course.

Post Prom Chair & Volunteers Needed

The 2019 Bellevue East Prom will be held on April 6th. Traditionally, there has been an After Prom for students at the high school, and parents volunteer to chaperone and run the events, etc. We need a parent or parents to chair this year’s Post Prom event. If you would be willing to take on this responsibility, please contact Dr. Wagner. We want to make sure our students have a safe alternative for after prom.

Dean’s Dispatch

1) Allow extra time in the morning to get to school as the weather gets colder and travel becomes more challenging.

2) Students who are absent from school need to have a parent/guardian call the school or send a note to excuse the absence.

3) The dress code is still enforced during the winter. Students are not allowed to wear stocking caps, carry blankets, or wear heavy coats during the school day. Light jackets and sweatshirts are permitted.

4. Just a reminder that students with off campus lunch privilege CANNOT bring outside food in the building.

NMSI Saturday Sessions for AP Students

During the year, AP students have the opportunity to attend Saturday Study Sessions as required by the National Math Science Initiative (NMSI) grant. These Saturday Study Sessions provide fantastic opportunities for students to brush up on skills to help them earn a qualifying score on the AP test in the spring. Saturday Study Sessions are taught by national presenters and may help your child earn a 3 or higher on the AP exam. Earning a 3 or higher on the AP exam can help your child earn college credit while still in high school. Because of our partnership with NMSI, students who earn a 3 or higher on the English, Math, or Science AP exams will receive $100 for each exam earning a qualifying score. Saturday Study Sessions have proven in other districts to help scores, so we strongly encourage students to attend. Students are encouraged to sign up with their AP teachers.
