The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) is a leading values-driven improvement agency. We are independent and people-focused, operating at policy and practice levels. Working beyond and across social care and health and children’s and adults sectors we offer a wide range of tailored and flexible improvement support. In recent years we have evolved from a largely government funded body to a fast-moving high profile social purpose business and thought leader. developing our range of large and small commercial projects covering consultancy, training, evaluation and research to complement our government funded commissions. The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) is a leading values-driven improvement agency. Based in Central

London, we employ 45 staff and operate with a turnover of c£6m. In recent years we have evolved from a largely

government funded body to a more commercially-orientated social purpose business and thought leader.

Our influence is far greater than our size. Our service offer covers policy and practice, including government

commissions as well as a range of consultancy, training, evaluation and research projects. We have expanded our

client base across social care and health, children’s and adult sectors – and we aim to increase this reach even

further.

Our current Chief Executive, Tony Hunter, is leaving in March 2020. We seek a new Chief Executive to work closely

with the Chair, the Rt Hon. Paul Burstow, and the Board to lead SCIE through the next exciting phase of our

transformation. We are open as to your background, but you will bring a track record of successful leadership and

exceptional business acumen combined with an interest in shaping national policy and practice improvement across

the social care landscape.

Job Description

Responsible for Leading and managing the Organisation

Job location The Social Care Institute is a UK Charity working in England, Northern Ireland and Wales and based in London. The CEO is expected to work across the organisation’s footprint, but based in London

Hours 35 hours per week (flexible, commensurate with the requirements of the role and its seniority)

Salary £TBC per annum (attractive package of benefits)

Main purpose of post

• To promote the mission, aims, values and business objectives of SCIE.

• To advise and support the Trustees in the development of Scie as a sustainable, values led small to medium sized charity via a range of commissions and income generating activity

• To enhance SCIE’s national profile and impact as an innovative and evidence -informed improvement agency helping make a real difference to the lives of those using care and support services

• To lead and inspire the organisation’s staff, generating pride and shared identity in achieving ambitious targets in joined up and mutually supportive and challenging way

• To model internally and externally the behaviours and culture expected of SCIE employees and in particular the principles of co-production in the design, delivery and review of care and support services.

Principal tasks and responsibilities Strategic ▪ With the Board to develop the SCIE’s strategic and business plans and policies and to lead their

implementation. ▪ To ensure that the organisation is equipped to identify, develop and win new business

opportunities.

▪ To develop the SCIE’s public profile. To influence key stakeholders and develop or maintain good relationships with the SCIE’s commissioners in the Department of Health and Welsh and Northern Ireland Governments, public bodies, charities and private sector organisations as well as user and carer groups and the general public.

▪ To keep the voice of service users, carers and others with lived experience of health and social care at the centre of SCIE’s work and vision.

▪ To keep up to date with new developments in the fields of social care and health to ensure that the organisation can respond rapidly to them.

▪ To ensure strategic decisions capture the breadth of the organisation, and the needs of the 3 jurisdictions of the UK in which SCIE works, whilst delivering key business priorities.

▪ To ensure that the organisation’s corporate policies and practices are up to date, relevant and fair in the current business environment and that the organisation is managed in line with current best practice.

▪ To build the income streams and reserves of SCIE.

Managerial ▪ To work with the Board, the Chief Operating Officer, Finance Manager and the Senior Management

Team to ensure that the organisation’s mission is delivered, statutory and regulatory duties are observed and that strategic and operational objectives are timely, clear, relevant and are implemented.

▪ To support and service the Board providing them with timely, relevant and transparent information and supporting the Chair in further developing the Board and its role.

▪ To work with the Chair to ensure good communications and relations between the Board and staff. ▪ Ensure that the staff structure and accountabilities develop in line with the business so that all

members of staff understand their key role and their accountability to the Board via line management.

▪ To work with the Finance Manager to formulate the annual budget, ensure that monthly financial management information is provided to the Board, the Audit and Risk Committee and to the Senior Management Team, to monitor performance against budget at least monthly and to take necessary corrective action.

▪ To manage the organisation and direct reports effectively, providing supervision, support, development and annual appraisal for all direct reports and ensuring they do so for all staff.

▪ To ensure that a risk management policy is in place and that the risk register is maintained and reviewed.

▪ To maintain and develop the balanced scorecard reporting system and that all products, services and marketing of SCIE meet basic quality standards.

▪ To ensure an effective complaints system, dealing personally with CEO/serious complaints as necessary.

▪ To ensure compliance with employment and equality legislation and accepted good practice.

Communication/Ambassadorial ▪ To be the principal spokesperson for the organisation in all media including face to face

opportunities with all key stakeholders in order to promote the organisation’s business and mission. ▪ Ensuring that the Chair is supported to undertake their ambassadorial role for SCIE including

undertaking face to face engagement with key stakeholders. ▪ Working with the Chief Operating Officer to represent and promote the organisation to potential

clients and commissioners. ▪ To communicate the key expertise of the organisation to sector audiences to sustain the knowledge

based brand of the organisation via conferences, publications and other opportunities. General ▪ To maintain the required level of confidentiality. ▪ To ensure that all staff, commissioners, clients, partners, associates and users of SCIE services are

respected and valued. ▪ Up hold the commitment of the organisation to equality and diversity. ▪ Undertake any other duties as required by the Trustees.

Person Specification

Experience

Minimum of three years’ senior management in any relevant sector E
