The red carpet was rolled out at Chichester College on November 8, for the Stars of 2012 Awards Ceremony. This annual event is the College’s celebration of achievement and recognises staff and students for outstanding practice, determination, innovation and success in the face of adversity. The Awards came at the end of a long day for the crew from Stage Management, who had worked tirelessly since 6am to ensure that the Sports Hall was transformed. Floristry students from Brinsbury created beautiful table arrangements and Hospitality students served delicious food prepared by our Catering students.

With Trudy Baxter and Andy Green organising proceedings, rehearsals throughout the day went smoothly, apart from the occasional fire-alarm caused by the pyrotechnics!

Once guests had been welcomed and shown to their tables by our Travel & Tourism students, the show began with introductions from comperes Andy Green, Jane Sumner and Lisa Humphries. Awards were presented in a wide variety of categories (to be featured in next week’s Chichester Matters Star Awards issue) and guests were treated to uplifting performances from Performing Arts, Fashion and Pop Music.

With 23 Star Awards on offer and one Brightest Star to be selected from the winners, it was a nerve wracking wait for the nominees and their families. When the moment arrived, it was Hairdressing student James Budd, 21, who was named the Brightest Star of 2012 for his dedication, hard work and exceptional showing at the L’Oreal National Hairdressing Finals where he was one of only 12 finalists.

Having started Chichester College on a Music course, it soon became apparent that James’ passion lay in hairdressing. Upon completion of his Music course

he immediately signed up for Level 1 Hairdressing and in just three years, successfully completed our highest level of hairdressing qualification. During his time at Chichester College James has competed successfully in a range of competitions and has recently gone into business, working as a stylist alongside a successful tattoo artist.

Since completing his studies, James has been working at the College on a voluntary basis in the Hairdressing department where he has been supporting students in the salon.

Dead good time

HE Fair

Universities from across the country descended on Chichester College for the annual HE Fair held in the Conference Hall. Organised by the College’s Positive About Futures team, the event gives students looking to progress onto Higher Education, the

chance to explore their options in one convenient location.

Martin Ford from Positive About Futures, said: “The choices students make about University are extremely important now considering the large number of progression options available.

“The event gives students the chance to speak with Universities about course choices, fees, accommodation and study options.“A number of Universities bought along student ambassadors which our students found particularly helpful. Positive About Futures were also on hand to offer Personal Statement Workshops which proved popular.”

That’ll leave a ‘Mark’‘Jon’ of the Dead

Dr Mark Nason and his STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths) Club, welcomed back Dr Anna Tanczos and Dr Kathryn Harkup from the University of Sussex, to talk about the science of zombies and Frankenstein’s monster.

The talks began with a look at the origins of zombies and focussed on the Fore tribe who practised cannibalism in Papua New Guinea in the 1950s. The informative and sometimes terrifying presentations were witnessed by 50 eager students, some of whom had dressed as zombies for the day to raise money for The Honeypot Children’s Charity (www.honeypot.org.uk).

Fortunately, all non-zombies made it through the afternoon unscathed and a magnificent £217 was raised for charity. We’re dying to have the Drs back again next year!

The new Brinsbury Animal Care Unit

An artist’s impression of how the completed building should look.

World Travel MarketOn Wednesday November 7 2012, the NVQ Levels 2 & 3 from College Travel visited the World Travel Market which is the leading global event for the travel industry.

Throughout the day, the students were able to experience the whole of the travel industry under one roof.

Nick Green (Level 2 Customer Service) said: “I found out there was a variety of different organisations in the industry and learnt more about different destinations. It was a great opportunity to go, and it has confirmed that this is the industry I want to work in.”

Charlotte Charman (Level 3 Travel & Tourism Services) said: “It helped me to understand that there is more to the travel industry than just College Travel, and it was a great networking opportunity.”

With the College constantly looking to update and upgrade facilities, work has begun on the new Animal Care, Dog Grooming and Floristry unit at Brinsbury.

The current accommodation will be replaced with a brand new £3million, state-of-the-art building and adjoining paddocks. This two-storey building will accommodate the three curriculum areas and significantly enhance the environment for staff, students, customers and animals.

We will keep you updated with the progress of the build at Brinsbury as well as the new G Block at Chichester.

BernadosFashion ShowThere was a fascinating array of designs and garments on display at the first College Fashion Show of the year, on Friday November 9.

Georgina Hooper, Course Leader for Fashion, teamed up again with Barnardos to create the Design for Life Fashion Show, to raise money for the charity and to give the new L3 Fashion Diploma students a platform to present work from their first assignment, Exquisite Corpse. The project looks at the deconstruction of clothes reclaimed from Barnardos charity shops and the reconstruction of these items to create a new piece. Students also incorporated elements of bleaching and dying to enhance their garments.

Ticket sales in the build up to the event were frantic and this meant that the Conference Hall was full when it came to

show time. As well as proud parents and friends, the audience included Denise Kelly, from the Chichester Herald, who kindly donated £100 on behalf of the newspaper, to the overall total of £575 raised.

The first show of the year showed the great promise within the Fashion department and it will be exciting to see how the students’ skills are perfected in preparation for the End of Year show in June 2013.

Course Leader, Georgina Hooper (below) said: “The event exceeded all expectations and the group are an incredibly motivated and ambitious cohort. We are very proud of them and the money raised for such a good cause.”

Special thanks goes to Bridget Ruinet on sound, photographer Melanie Insall, Loraine Edwards on lights, Steph Moss as choreographer and Georgina Hooper as compere.

Black History Month (BHM) T-Shirt Competition

Remembrance Day

To honour Black History Month, students from AS and A-Level Graphics designed t-shirts highlighting the need for racial equality. The students’ unique designs were then printed and displayed in Reception for two weeks, which allowed staff and students the chance to place a sealed bid on the shirt that caught their eye.

The highly popular and colourful display lead to eight of the shirts being sold, raising an overall total of £68. Principal Shelagh Legrave was lucky enough to win her personal favourite, which was designed by AS graphic student Natasha Websdale, 16.

The money raised will be donated to Children in Need. Course leader, Kim Hunt said: “The project was the new AS Graphic students’ first project and I have been so impressed with the group’s diligence and hard work. I feel they are all on track for excellent grades if they continue working this way and producing work of such a high standard.”

The College poignantly paid their respects to the armed forces with a touching remembrance service in Coasters. Staff and students fell silent for two minutes following an introduction from Reverend John Dane, and readings from students including Student President, Sebastiaan Posma.

The ceremony was brought to a close by L3 Jazz student Matthew Berry’s faultless performance of The Last Post. The College sold poppies in Reception and we await confirmation of the money raised from collections. Football students show their respect with a one minute silence

Going DutchChichester College links with the Netherlands

On October 23-26, Sheila Thorpe and I attended the 2012 European Forum of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (EFVET) conference in Palma, Mallorca. EFVET is a European-wide professional association, which was created by and for providers of technical and vocational education and training in all European countries.

The aim of the conference was to link up colleges and schools from all over Europe in order to network and find new partnerships. Among the countries attending were delegates from Finland, Norway, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Cyprus, Belgium, Portugal, as well as Bahrain and Hong Kong!

During the conference, there were opportunities to hear guest speakers share their knowledge of European funding available through Erasmus and Leonardo schemes, as well as hear about projects already taking place between colleges in Europe. These projects included Finnish Tourism students visiting Cyprus for work placements in hotels and a joint venture between UK and Spain aimed

to help women with small rural business’ understand how to run their companies more effectively.

During the conference, Sheila signed on behalf of Chichester College, an agreement with Horizon College in the Netherlands with a view to working closely together in the future.

Sussex Road Policing Unit and West Sussex Fire Brigade recently visited Brinsbury’s motorcycle and moped riders to present the Young Riders Health and Safety programme. The teams delivered two sessions to over 30 students, and spent time checking equipment, advising on road safety and the laws of the road.

With 20 fatalities on roads in Sussex already this year, the need to educate the College’s students on road safety was evident. They were warned about the weather conditions at this time of year and the need for visibility, lights and protective clothing.

The event was organised by Jan Dougharty, a motorcycle rider herself, and was well received by the students who attended. Each was provided with a high visibility jacket and crash card, allowing them to be easily identified if they are involved in an accident.

The Young Riders team will be visiting Chichester Campus in the coming weeks and we will also be hosting Safe Drive on November 27, 28 and 29.

Movember 2012

Table TennisInternational Culture FairA team representing Chichester College made a promising debut in the first round of the Table Tennis National Junior League on Saturday 3rd November at the Neville Lovett Community School in Fareham. The team, comprising Konrad Kolpak, Marcin Szydlowski and Ben Taylor, achieved two wins, two draws and one defeat against teams from Bournemouth, Fareham and the Isle of Wight. With each player playing 10 matches, Konrad led the way with an excellent 80 per cent winning record, followed by Ben with 60 per cent and Marcin with 40 per cent.

After a winning 6-0 start against the Generation II, Fareham TTC 'D' team, Chichester College went on to beat the 'C' team 5-1 and draw with the same club's 'B' team 3-3. A further 3-3 draw against Bournemouth 'C' set up the deciding match of the day between Chichester College and the Isle of Wight who had won all their earlier matches. This tie ended in defeat for Chichester despite Konrad inflicting the first defeat of the day for the Island's number one and two games which saw Konrad and Ben only edged out after very close five set encounters.

Three of BRTTC’s junior members, Konrad Kolpak, Ben Taylor and Marcin Szydlowski, have been selected to play for Chichester College in the U18 National Junior League.

Each year more than 2500 International students from over 80 countries choose Chichester College for their studies. With such a wide range of nationalities represented, the International Culture Fair is the perfect opportunity for them to share their country’s food, music, language and customs.

Students spent the morning erecting stands, draping flags and preparing food, whilst music and videos brought the event to life, creating a cosmopolitan vibe in Coasters. Some students went one-step further and dressed in traditional national attire adding to the experience.

The event culminated in a Eurovision Song contest where countries performed renditions of their national anthem or popular songs from their homeland. With some enthusiastic performances and an excitable audience, the event ended thrilling tie between Belgium, Brazil and Japan.

Student President, Sebastiaan Posma, who was representing our Dutch contingent said: “It was nice to see so many nationalities celebrating together in one place. Our international students are a big part of College life and this great event really impressed everyone with the food, music and performances on show.”

If you’ve been alarmed by the volume of upper lip hair this month, there’s no need to panic. Since 2004, the month of November has been renamed Movember, allowing men of all ages to become moustachioed mavericks for the entire month, raising awareness of prostate cancer and other male cancers.

The College’s very own Barbering students are offering staff the chance to tame, trim and style any unruly moustaches as Mark Butcher (right) from the Maintenance team discovered earlier this week.

Join us in the next issue of Chichester Matters for an update on Mark’s handlebar ‘tache. If you’re growing a ‘top lip tickler’ contact us so we can get a picture.

If you’re interested in booking an appointment with our Barbering students, please call ext 2262.
