Dear Parents,
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome
everyone back for what will be an exciting term 4. Our
school was very busy over the holiday period as we had
a building project completed and a thriving holiday
care program take place.
Long Service Leave
I want to take this opportunity to remind our school
community that I will be taking Long Service Leave
from the 8/10/13 until the 18/11/13. My family and I
will be travelling to the United States where we will
explore New York, Orlando, Las Vegas and Los
Angeles. During my absence the school will be in the
capable hands of Mrs Street, Mr Colagrande and our
wonderful staff. It is the first time in my career that I
have taken Long Service Leave and our family are very
much looking forward to the adventure.
New Building
We have had some new buildings installed on our
school grounds at the start of the holidays. These
buildings were purchased by the school and will be an
asset for our whole school community as time goes on.
Sun Smart School
Our school is a proud participant in the sun smart
program. We expect every student to wear a hat in term
1 and term 4. Please ensure that your child/ children
have appropriate hats to wear at school.
Christmas Raffle
Our Christmas raffle will take place once again in
2013. We would really appreciate any donations that
could be given to the school that we could use to place
in hampers for prizes. We have already had books, a
swivel chair and some stationary donated to the school
and we would really appreciate parents donating items
such as food, toys or Christmas decorations. All
donations can be given to the office area. The raffle
tickets will be given to students at the end of October.
2014 Prep Enrolment
I have completed many Prep tours for prospective
parents for 2014!
It would be really helpful if parents who have a
younger child starting at our school next year to come
to the office quickly and fill out an enrolment form.
In the past two years we have been able to cater for five
Prep classes. Due to limitations of space, I cannot
guarantee this in 2014. So please get your enrolment
form completed ASAP for your own piece of mind.
If you know of family or friends who are looking to
enrol their children at our school next year can I please
ask that they call the office to arrange a tour and
interview with me promptly to avoid any possibility of
disappointment?
Regards Chris

MUSIC PERFORMANCE WITH
DAVID JONES & SERGEI GOLOVKO
On Wednesday 18th September, drummer David Jones and percussionist Sergei Golovko performed at our school. To have these two musicians perform together in a primary school setting was a very unique experience as both of these performers are recognized as masters of their craft, and highly regarded world-wide. It was a truly inspiring event, one we will never forget. TLPS would like to thank both performers for giving us this fantastic opportunity and quality performance.

“The percussion performance was amazing! David and Sergei were always smiling and I think that’s why the audience was smiling too. Sergei performed a piece with unusual objects, like a bird whistle, sword and a washboard. He even played the marimba with four sticks! David Jones is just a legend. He was amazing and fast, making it all look like it was the easiest thing in the world. Together the two made a wonderful performance.” Mikayla Wemm 5VR
X FACTOR STAR:
JORDAN RODRIGUES
Jordan Rodrigues, a past student of Taylors Lakes Primary School, is currently starring on X Factor in the group ‘Third D3gree’. We are so proud of his achievements on making it into the final five. Music was always a subject that Jordan was very passionate towards, involving himself in every musical group, from Beat Boxing to the Middle Years Percussion Ensemble. He was also our lead performer in the Junior Rock Eisteddfod production held at Rod Laver Arena in 2007. During his time at TLPS, Jordan was also involved in Australian Idol, representing Victoria in the Junior Division. Jordan’s talent and determination to succeed has led him to be part of such an amazing experience. We wish him all the best and congratulate him on his outstanding effort in X Factor. Brimbank Council Writers and Readers Festival 2013
We are pleased to announce that a student from our school has taken out First Prize in the Children’s Open Category for Writing at the Brimbank Council Writers and Readers Festival. Thulasi Rajkumar of 6JS collected a cheque for $150 in winning first prize for her short story “Shoe…Shoe…” The story appears in full below. Congratulations Thulasi!
Shoe…Shoe “A mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work if it is not
open.” Frank Zappa
Once upon a time some animals lived in an Asian jungle. The animals had never seen a human before, so when they saw something strange lying in a clearing, none of them knew it was a man’s shoe.
The first animal to walk into the clearing was a bear. The bear sniffed the shoe. “I’ve never seen anything like this before. It smells strange. It must be the tough skin of a fruit which has turned brown like an old banana skin,” thought the bear.
A handsome tiger came prowling out of the long grass and stopped to look at the shoe. The bear pushed the shoe to the tiger.
“This old brown skin smells strange and I don’t know what fruit it’s from,” growled the bear. The tiger rolled the shoe and sniffed. “I agree it smells odd but it’s not a fruit. It smells too salty to be one. It must be a dried up fish. Look at the shape. It’s long and pointy at the front!” explained the tiger.
“It does look like a fish but it can’t be one because it has no fins or scales. It must be some sort of banana skin,” insisted the bear.
A curious monkey dropped down from a branch and scampered over to look. “Let me see. No, you are both wrong. I can tell a nutshell when I see one and this definitely looks like a nutshell,” declared the monkey.
“It’s not a nutshell!” yelled the tiger and the bear.
“It is the skin of a fruit,” groaned the bear.
“It’s a fish!” roared the tiger.
They grunted, growled and screeched, arguing which one of them was right. Just then, a beautiful deer frolicked into the clearing. “Oh my, what’s this noise all about?” asked the deer. The monkey explained everything. The deer sniffed the shoe. She rolled it around with her hoof and even licked it. “I believe this is a piece of bark from a tree,” explained the deer. All at once the animals started to make a big racket, which woke up a wise owl.
“Whoo, why the hullabaloo?” asked the owl, flying down from his hollow. The bear explained everything to the owl. The owl hopped closer to the object and realised it was a man’s shoe.
“Oh, you silly animals, this is a man’s shoe,” laughed the owl. “It can’t be the skin of a fruit; it is too hard. It isn’t a dried up fish because it has no gills. It can’t be a nutshell because it is too big and it is absolutely not a piece of bark because it is too smooth.”
“A man’s shoe!” laughed the animals, “Ridiculous!” The animals, too proud to listen to wisdom, chased the poor owl out of the forest.
“It’s true! It’s a shoe…shoe…shoe…” hooted the owl as she flew away, disappointed, never to be seen again.

Maths Games Day On the 13th of September eight of our grade six
Maths Olympiad students, Chloe 6JS, Thulasi 6JS,
Karen 6LM, Sasini 6LM, Pranav 6LM, Jamie-Rose
6MV, Jessica D 6MV and James S 6MV along with
Mr.Sevior and Mr. Signorile went to Genazzano FCJ
College in Kew to participate in a Maths Games Day.
The nerves were high on the way there but once we
got started we were confident that we could make
our school proud. The eight of us were split into two
teams of four. The first team consisted of Thulasi,
Chloe, Karen and Sasini. The second team consisted
of Jessica D, Jamie-Rose, Pranav and James S.
There was three categories of challenges: problem
solving, one on one and physical. The first challenge
that we took on was the problem solving, we had 1
hour to complete all of the 30 questions, we tried
our best and ended up answering all of the questions
we attempted correctly.
The second challenge was the one on one. For this
we played strategic games against different schools.
The first game was called honeycomb. We had to
roll a six-sided die to receive a number to place in a
hexagon. A hexagon had to be filled up with all the
numbers from 1-6. One number couldn’t occur twice
in one hexagon. If you receive to fill the last place
of the hexagon, you won that hexagon. For the
second games we had to roll two dice and make
those two numbers into a decimal. We had to keep
adding the decimals until one of us made it go 5 or
over. In the third game we received a sheet of
paper with dots. We had to take turns with our
opponent and draw a line. The first person to join
two lines together lost.
The fourth and final
game was a
multiplication board
game.
The third challenge
was the physical
challenge. For this we had 6 different activities to
complete, but only managed to complete 5. Co-
operation was very important in these challenges.
The first
challenge was
called Across
the River. In
this challenge
we had to get
everyone, two
adults and two
children, across
the river, according to certain patterns, 1 child
could go across or 1 adult and 1 child. We all
completed the challenge successfully. The second
game was bingo. We would be given a sum and as a
group we had to find the answer. Once we completed
that we had to check if it was on our bingo card.
The third game we participated was a running game.
We were given a sum to complete. Once we got the
answer each team member had to run to and collect
a number to make the answer. The first team to
collect and construct the answer won. The next
game was also a running game. One member from
each team had to run to a table and roll a six-sided
die. Once we rolled a six we were given a sum to
complete. Once we had answered it correctly, we
ran back to our team, tagged our next team mate
and sat down. The first team to all be sitting down
won. The final game was the most difficult. Each
team was given a four by four grid and some
colourful counters. We had to arrange the counters
onto the grid with the same colour appearing in the
same row vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The
first team to finish the challenge won.
We sadly didn’t receive first, second or third but
we were proud to have represented our school in
such a special event. Together with our participation
in the Maths Olympiad, it’s been a great year for
Maths. …………………….
