officials as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) fornortheastern Illinois. The MPO is responsible, in cooperation withthe state, for carrying out the region’s urban transportation planningprocess as prescribed by USDOT.

• CATS prepares an annual Unified Work Program (UWP) thatallocates federal funds to support transportation planning in theregion. CATS also prepares the region’s long-range RegionalTransportation Plan (RTP) and six-year TransportationImprovement Program (TIP). The agency provides technicalplanning support to member agencies, engages in communityoutreach to improve public involvement in transportation planning,and assists in coordinating the transportation planning activities ofseveral subregional planning councils in northeastern Illinois.
