It is my privilege to extend my congratulations to you for being

accepted as a student to Moody Bible Institute. I am pleased

that the Lord has led you to choose Moody as the college where

you will prepare for your lifes work. You will be joining a unique

group of students who are studying Gods Word in preparation

for ministry to a world that desperately needs to hear the gospel.

In the Student Development department at Moody Bible Institute,

our mission is to help students mature in Christ (Col. 1:2829) and

grow as members of the body of Christ (Eph. 4:1516). We care

for students and desire to see you reach your full potential.

As you prepare to join the student body at Moody, we have

included this packet of information to help you in your transition.

Please read all the information carefully to make sure you know

every important detail. I would suggest that after reading the

enclosed information, you complete and return the necessary

forms as quickly as possible, so that you will not have to care

for these matters when you arrive on campus. To aid you in this

process, we have included a checklist for your reference.

I look forward to meeting you and I pray that the Lord prepares

you for your time at Moody. If you have questions, please dont

    CORE VALUES

Welcome to Moody Bible Institute! Below you will

discover some of the core values that we hold to at

    Moody Bible Institute.

Valuing TraditionYou are part of a larger story. As your educational

partners and spiritual leaders, we want you to play

a dynamic role in this story by valuing our tradition.

During your time here, you will learn about Moodys

heritage and get your opportunity to be a participant.

Our goal is to familiarize you with our tradition and

invite you to make it your own.

Why do we value tradition? We value tradition

because it tells us who we are. Tradition is a story

or legacy that predates us but shapes our identity.

It helps answer fundamental questions about who

we are (as a nation, a group, or an individual) and

define our purpose. Tradition connects us with our

roots and provides meaning, order, and mission.

    Loving Leadership

As an integral part of the Student Services Division, the

staff of Student Development serve as co-educators

and spiritual leaders who love and lead the student

body. We intentionally shape the Moody culture so that

students mature in Christ. We attempt to lead students

through life-giving relationships that add value, deepen

character, and encourage development in each student.

Our residence hall program is intended to provide a

training ground for leadership and ministry because we

believe in students potential as ministers and leaders.

We seek to serve students with love and respect, not

fear and control. This redeeming, relational love is the

context in which we strive to maintain rules and

    exercise discipline.

Our mission is to serve as a catalyst for students

to become complete in Christ (Col. 1:2829) and to

encourage them to become growing and complementary

members of the body of Christ (Eph. 4:1516). It is to

this end that we care for students and help them to

grow in every aspect of their lives. We desire to see

students reach their full potential and take hold of

the gifts that the Lord has given them. Our goal is that

students would leave Moody as whole individuals

who love the Lord, love others, and serve for the

    advancement of the Kingdom.

Our relationships are sacred because we reflect

Gods image. We must honor each other by showing

respect, shaping each others character, speaking the

truth in love, and exercising mutual submission andencouragement. As an institution, we desire to live and

grow together in a safe environment. We provide this

experience so that you can learn communal practices

such as vulnerability, healthy boundaries, and mutual

    accountability.

    Holistic Formation

Successful growth as a student at Moody means

maturing in Christ. We are intentional about helping

you incorporate your spiritual growth with your

academic, physical, and social growth. You will have

many opportunities to apply your Moody learning

in conversation, Scripture study, hospitality, practical

    ministry, creativity, and worship.

We desire to see our students incorporate God into

even the mundane areas of life. Students can expect to

be challenged spiritually, emotionally, and relationally

at Moody. We want to assist students in any way we can

to integrate what is learned in the classroom or chapel

into their lives. We believe the choices that students

make about the way they spend their time is part of

maturing in Christ, and our hope is that our students

would see how Christ can be glorified in all that they

do and say and how the information they learn in the

classroom can be applied in their everyday lives.

    COMMUNITY STANDARDS

In addition to the acquisition of knowledge, an integral

part of your personal development at Moody will be the

maturation of your values and lifestyle, with Scripture as

a foundation. In an effort to provide a community that is

pleasing to God, the following principles are presented as

guidelines for both attitude and behavior. While not every

life situation is specifically mentioned, these principles

generally address most circumstances and can be applied

to the daily decision-making process. As we allow our

lives to be governed by such principles, our community

will become more nurturing and God-honoring.

Faculty, students, and staff are committed as a

community to maintaining an atmosphere that reflects

our life in Christ and ultimately gives Him honor and

glory. The staff of Student Development realize that itis impossible to create behavioral standards acceptable

to every member. We feel it is essential to specify

certain rules and patterns of behavior to ensure that

this desirable environment exists. The following

considerations are used as the basis of Moodys standards.

    Entertainment

Members of the Moody community are expected to

use discernment in making choices concerning music,

drama, dance, comedy, literature, television, movies,

video games, and the Internet, as our choices and

decisions affect not only ourselves but those around us.

Understanding that a wide variety of opinions exist

within the Christian community regarding the many

forms of entertainment and desiring to strike a balance

between these views and provide an atmosphere best

suited for students development, we have chosen

to prohibit certain forms of entertainment. Students

are to refrain from gambling, viewing obscene or

pornographic material, and patronizing pubs, bars,

night clubs, dance clubs, comedy clubs, and similar

establishments. There will be no on- or off-campus

dances sponsored or organized by Moody Bible

    Institute students or personnel.

Members of the community are to refrain from the use

of tobacco in any form, alcoholic beverages, and illegal

drugs. Under no circumstances are the above to be

used, possessed, or distributed on or away from campus

during a students tenure. In addition, students are

not to abuse legal or prescribed substances.

    Chapel

The chapel program is an important part of the

educational experience at Moody. Chapels enhance

Christian life and character by encouraging the discipline

of corporate worship and addressing issues related to

Christian living. Chapels also serve as a strategic time for

building community on campus. Chapels are usually held

in Torrey-Gray Auditorium Tuesdays through Thursdays

at 10:00 a.m., except on holidays and during final

examinations listed in the school calendar. All students

are permitted eight absences from chapel per semester.

There are chapels on Fridays which are typically optional.

Various student groups lead these chapels.

    Missions Conference and Founders Week

The annual Missions Conference held in October is a

four-day event where students learn about missions

organizations worldwide. Founders Week is an annual

Bible conference that provides students with the

opportunity to hear outstanding Bible teachers and

preachers. All regular classes are canceled during

these conferences, and students are required to attend

conference sessions. Students should not make any

commitments that could prevent them from attending

any required session of these two conferences.

Student Life Guide (SLG) and Agreement

The SLG contains important information pertaining to

Moody life. It is the responsibility of the student to be

thoroughly familiar with its standards and procedures.

If you have any questions concerning the interpretation

and application of these guidelines, contact the Student

    Development department at 312-329-4190.

A thorough reading and understanding of the SLG is

required each year while in attendance. Students are

required to read the online SLG and sign the electronicagreement that follows. Log in to my.moody.edu. Select

Main Menu from the left-hand corner of the Student

tab, scroll to Student Forms, and select Student Life

    Residence Life

Your experience in the residence halls and oncampus will be a vital part of your Moody education.

The Residence Life staff is committed to working with

you as you grow in your relationships with the people

around you. On each floor there is a Resident Assistant

(RA), a student selected to serve as a leader and

resource person. A Resident Supervisor, who is a

full-time professional, lives in each residence hall

and supports the campus living experience.

By purposefully mixing majors, ages, and academic

years on each floor, our desire is that older students

mentor younger students and that everyone develop

healthy relational skills by daily interacting with people

who have different perspectives. As Christians, we

believe that living in community is one of the ways

that God refines and develops our character.

    Requesting Residence Preferences

All new single students will automatically be housed

in one of our residence halls. You have the option of

requesting your preferred roommate, residence hall,

or floor. You may send your preference by e-mail to

[email protected] or by filling out a form at

After housing is complete (June 15), you will receive

information via e-mail about how to view your room

    Q. What if I am sick and miss class?

    A. You are required to e-mail your professors in a timely

on Academic Standards. Please refer to the current

Student Life Guide for additional information.

insurance company for reimbursement for services

    received in Health Service.

    Health Service?

    A. An appointment is needed to have an elementaryeducation physical, to see the doctor, to have lab
