Adam Caplan, Scout.com: He'll earn the following base salaries of: (2008) $295,000 (2009) $385,000 (2010) $470,000 (2011) $555,000 with a signing bonus of around $820,800.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: The base value of the deal is $15 million. Bennett received a $6 million signing bonus, $1.2 million of which counts against the team’s salary cap this season.

Here are the other details of the contract: 2012: Fully guaranteed base salary of $1 million. Bennett also earns a $500,000 roster bonus in March. There is a $100,000 workout bonus. 2013: $2.25 million base salary of which $1.5 million is guaranteed vs. injury. There is a $100,000 workout bonus. 2014: $2.35 million base salary. There is a $100,000 workout bonus. 2015: $2 million base salary. There is a $100,000 workout bonus. There is also an escalating roster bonus that starts at $500,000, giving the contract a base value of $15 million. Bennett’s 2015 roster bonus can increase by as much as $3 million, making the max value of the contract $18 million.

Here is how the roster bonus works: 1. Bennett can trigger an additional maximum of $3 million if he has three consecutive seasons of 80 receptions and 1,200 yards. Those targets, individually, are worth an additional $500,000 in 2015. So, in 2012, 2013 or 2014, if he has only one season with 80 receptions, he will trigger an additional $500,000. 2. The roster bonus will increase by an additional maximum of $1.65 million if he has three consecutive seasons of 70 receptions and 1,000 yards. 3. The roster bonus will increase by an additional maximum of $600,000 if he has three consecutive seasons of 65 receptions and 850 yards.

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: By giving the players the right to terminate the contracts, the $6.5 million in signing bonuses for Bennett and Williams were applied to the Bears' 2011 salary cap, increasing Bennett's cap number from $1.405 million to $7.405 million… In order for Bennett to terminate his agreement with the Bears and become an unrestricted free agent, he would be required to repay the team $20 million.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Sun-Times: As far as the guaranteed money totaling $16 million ... Benson never realized that figure because he was that bad on the field. The contract included multiple opportunities for him to trigger two $1.73 million bonuses ($3.46 million total). He finished with 674 yards rushing last season when he broke his left leg/ankle, leaving him 27 yards shy of triggering one of the bonuses.

Briggs’ contract will place him in the top 10 at his position in the league and he will pocket more in 2008 than he did with the $7.206 million franchise tag in 2007… A breakdown of the contract: 2008 $4 million signing bonus $3.75 million roster bonus $805,000 base salary $250,000 workout bonus… 2009 $4.75 million roster bonus $1.1 million base salary $250,000 workout bonus… 2010 $3.3 million roster bonus $3.145 million base salary $250,000 workout bonus… 2011 $3,650,000 base salary $250,000 workout bonus… 2012 $3,750,000 base salary $250,000 workout bonus… 2013 $6,250,000 base salary $250,000 workout bonus…

Mike Florio, PFT: Briggs’ new deal pays $17.5 million over three years, $5 million of which is fully guaranteed. (As a practical matter, another $3.25 million is guaranteed, given that it’s highly unlikely the Bears will cut him this year.) In 2012, Briggs gets $3 million to sign, a $3 million base salary, and a $250,000 workout bonus. That gives him $6.25 million; under his prior deal he would have earned $4 million. Next year, Briggs is due to receive a $1 million roster bonus in June and a $4.5 million base salary, $2 million of which is fully guaranteed. He also is eligible for a $250,000 workout bonus. It’s a payout of $5.75 million. Under the prior deal, he would have earned $6.5 million in non-guaranteed base salary. In 2014, Briggs is due to receive a $500,000 roster bonus in June and a non-guaranteed base salary of $4.75 million. He also is eligible to receive a $25,000 workout bonus.

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Bush agreed to a four-year, $14 million contract… the four-year agreement contains $6 million in fully guaranteed money with another $1.45 million that's basically guaranteed, but not officially stated so in the contract. The fully guaranteed (skill, injury and cap) portion of Bush's contract is comprised of a $4 million signing bonus, $900,000 of a $950,000 base salary in 2012 and $1.1 million of a $1.5 million base salary in 2013. Including the non-guaranteed base salary, that's $6.45 million in signing bonus and base salary that Bush is likely to receive over the first two seasons. Bush also has a $1 million roster bonus in 2013 that's non-guaranteed (but like the non-guaranteed portion of his base salary, is likely to be received) and $50,000 workout bonuses in each season that would bring his two-year cash haul to $7.55 million. Gene Chamberlain, Aurora Beacon News: If the Bears cut Caldwell, though, they would not realize a cap savings of his $755,000 salary because the remainder of his prorated $1 million signing bonus would count entirely against the cap this year. Caldwell had a four-year, $4.7 million deal with a $1 million bonus, so about $750,000 would count immediately against the Bears' cap from his bonus. So the Bears would net only about $5,000 against their cap by cutting Caldwell. It would, however, save them paying salaries of $1.01 and $1.2 million to Caldwell the next two years.

Andrew Brandt, NFP: Offseason Workout Bonus: $500,000 per season 2010-2013… the 2010 guarantee is for skill only, meaning if Cutler were to suffer a career-ending injury this season and not be able to play again, the $3.33M will not be guaranteed since it’s not guaranteed for injury.

Aaron Wilson, NFP: The details are in for Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler's seven-year, $126.7 million contract. According to a league source, the deal doesn't include a signing bonus and has $54 million in total guaranteed money. The deal averages $18.1 million per year. In 2014, Cutler has a $22.5 million base salary and salary-cap figure with $2.5 million of his base salary deferred until March 30, 2014 in addition to another $2.5 million paid out over the 2015 regular season. In 2015, Cutler has a $15.5 million base salary guaranteed and salary-cap figure. In 2016, Cutler has a $16 million base salary and salary-cap figure. In 2017, Cutler is due a $12.5 million nonguaranteed base salary and a $15 million salary-cap figure. He has $2.5 million in per-game roster bonus paid out for $156,250 for every game he's active. In 2018, he has a $13.5 million nonguaranteed base salary with a $16 million salary-cap figure. That includes the same $2.5 million per-game roster bonus. In 2019, he has a $17.5 million nonguaranteed base salary with a $20 million salary-cap figure. It has the same $2.5 million per-game roster bonus. In 2020, Cutler has a $19.2 million base salary plus $2.5 million per-game roster bonus.

Tom Pelissero, USA Today: The deal includes $17.5 million fully guaranteed at the timing of signing. The rest of Cutler's 2014 and '15 base salaries are guaranteed for injury only until the third day of the 2014 league year in March and the 2016 money until the third day of the 2015 league year. Cutler, 30, actually will get paid more in 2015 than '14, with $5 million of his $22.5 million base next season deferred to multiple payments the following year. The contract includes $500,000 base/guarantee de-escalators each year if Cutler doesn't fulfill offseason workout obligations.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: Ellis received a $285,000 signing bonus from the Bears but that has been processed after he opted to retire and did not show for training camp, landing on the reserve/retired list. The team had signed the former first-round pick of the Saints to a $1 million, one-year contract with $500,000 guaranteed. Ellis had $215,000 of his $715,000 base salary guaranteed, but that money will not be paid out now. All of the $1 million will not be credited back to the Bears’ salary cap this season, though, because Ellis retired. The club will receive the difference in a credit toward its 2014 salary cap.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Sun-Times: Forte received a signing bonus of $1,533,333 and then had $528,000 of his base salary of $555,000 in 2011 guaranteed vs. injury only.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: Forte, who earned a one-time incentive of $528,167 after his 2008 rookie season, is on the books for only $555,000 [in 2011].

Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: The base value of Forte’s contract is $28.1 million and it maxes out at $31.5 million… The contract guarantees $17.1 million – essentially what the Bears would have had to pay Forte if they paid him the franchise tag number of $7.742 million this season and tagged him again in 2013 at an increase of 120 percent… the contract will be worth $9.8 million in 2012. Forte stands to earn $6.3 million in 2013 bringing the value of the first two years to

$16.1 million. Had the Bears paid Forte the franchise tag in 2012 and tagged him again in 2013, they would have paid him $17.03 million. Forte will earn $6.6 million in 2014 bringing the three-year total for the deal to $22.7 million. He stands to earn $7.8 million in 2015, the final year of the contract bringing him to $30.5 million over four years. There is another $1 million he can earn in incentives/escalators to bring it to the maximum value of $31.5 million. To reach the max value of $31.5 million over four seasons, Forte will need to hit roster bonuses based on games dressed. At stake is $2.4 million over the final three years of the contract -- $500,000 in 2013, $850,000 in 2014 and $1.05 million in 2015.

Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports: Forte will make $800,000 in base in 2012, $1.7 million in 2013, $5.55 million in 2014 and $6.65 million in 2015, for a total of $14.7 million. He also got a $4 million signing bonus, and has a $5 million roster bonus in 2012, bringing his total compensation in the first year to just under $10 million. He also has a roster bonuses of $4 million in 2013, and if he is on the active roster for a full season in 2013 he gets another $500,000 (it rises to $850,000 in 2014 and $1.05 million in 2014). Forte also has $100,000 workout bonuses in 2013-2015, and can make another $1 million if he meets certain challenging incentives in the final two years of the deal.

Mike Florio, PFT: Forte’s deal is actually worth $30.4 million… the deal guarantees $13.8 million for injury and skill at signing, with another $3.3 million guaranteed for injury only… Base salary of $800,000 in 2012, fully guaranteed… Roster bonus of $4 million due on third day of 2013 league year, guaranteed for injury and skill at signing… Base salary of $1.7 million in 2013, guaranteed for injury through the fifth day of the 2013 league year, at which time it becomes fully guaranteed… Base salary of $5.5 million in 2014, $1.6 million of which is guaranteed for injury through the fifth day of the 2013 league year, at which time it becomes fully guaranteed (another $1 million becomes guaranteed for injury only on the fifth day of the 2014 league year)

Joel Corry, CBS Sports: Forte's 2015 base salary increases from $6.65 million to $7.05 million for him being one of the NFL's top dual threat running backs. He earned $400,000 for reaching 1,625 combined rushing and receiving yards. Forte finished the season with 1,846 yards from scrimmage. He scored 10 touchdowns, but needed 15 to add another $100,000 to his 2015 base salary.

Michael C. Wright, ESPN Chicago: Garza agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $6.55 million with $2.6 million guaranteed

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Garza has had his $2.175 million base salary increased to $7.086 million for the final nine weeks of the regular season, bringing his 2011 base salary to $4.775 million, a $2.6 million increase, which is guaranteed. Garza is scheduled to earn $1.75 million base salaries in 2012 and 2013.

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: the Bears signed center Roberto Garza to a two-year, $6.25 million extension. That extension increased Garza's 2011 base salary from a rate of $2.175

million to $7.086 million for the final nine weeks of the season, a net increase of $2.6 million in both base salary and cap dollars.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: Garza received a $100,000 signing bonus and the contract has a base value of $955,000, according to a source with knowledge of the deal. He will receive a $75,000 workout bonus and the remaining $370,000 can be earned in weekly roster bonuses. Garza will receive $23,125 for each game that he is on the 46-man game-day roster.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: Garza’s one-year contract is worth a maximum value of $1.5 million and included $75,000 in the form of a signing bonus that was applied to the team’s 2014 salary cap. The deal includes $290,000 in incentives that will be determined by playing time. If he is on the field for 75 percent of the offense’s snaps, he will collect the amount. Garza, 35, made 12 starts this past season, missing time with a high ankle sprain, and fell just short of that threshold… The contract also includes weekly roster bonuses in season -- $8,750 each week he is on the 46-man active gameday roster for a total of $140,000… [and a] $25,000 workout bonus…

Brad Biggs, Chicago Sun-Times: Harris' package totals $9.8 million and can reach $10.8 million if he maximizes an escalator clause in the final year based primarily on playing time. His signing bonus is $2.1 million, and with a roster bonus and option bonus next season, the deal has $6.9 million in guaranteed money in the first two years. It also has small bonuses should he reach the Pro Bowl.

JI Halsell, FO: 4/32 ext, 10.6 gteed, 22.6 over 3

John Clayton, ESPN: Tommie Harris' new $10 million-a-year deal with the Bears is one in which he's going to have to earn the chance to get $40 million. According to a source, Harris has an $8 million bonus in the final year of the deal that he would receive if he goes to three straight Pro Bowls. Harris went to the past three Pro Bowls. There is another $2 million of so that he would have to earn by his performance. Even with those incentives, Harris ended up with the top defensive tackle contract in the league.

Mike Florio, PFT: it turns out that the deal recently signed by Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris contains an $8 million roster bonus, which is due in 2012 and which could shrink to as little as $2 million. Per multiple league sources, the $8 million roster bonus will decrease in value by $1.5 million if Harris does not participate in 74 percent of the team’s snaps on defense or if he fails to make the Pro Bowl. In other words, he must do both in order to avoid the reduction. The triggers apply each season, from 2008 through 2011. So if Harris doesn’t participate in at least 74 percent of the defensive snaps and make the Pro Bowl in each of the next four seasons, the roster bonus will be $2 million. If he does it only once, the roster bonus will be $3.5 million. Twice, and it’s $5 million. Thrice, $6.5 million.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Sun-Times: He's not inclined to share individual goals, but the escalator for the final year of his contract that adds more than $1 million to his base pay if he's the defensive player of the year in the same season the team reaches the Super Bowl makes one target quite obvious.

Harris received only $10 million guaranteed and will earn the bulk of his money in a series of roster bonuses, including one for $6.67 million next season [2009].

Brad Biggs, Chicago Sun-Times: The Bears are counting on big things from Harris after paying him a $6.67 million roster bonus and they're going to preserve him for when it matters most. The next big payoff in Harris' deal is a $2.5 million roster bonus due June 1, 2010.

Sean Jensen, Chicago Sun-Times: June 1, 2011. That's when Harris is due a $2.5 million roster bonus and a $500,000 workout bonus.

Lincoln will make about $3.1 million. It will be top-loaded with a $1.3 million salary this season, including a $600,000 signing bonus… Lincoln, a restricted free agent, could have opted to accept a $328,000 qualifying offer this season…

John Mullin, Arlington Daily Herald: The Bears traded 1995 No. 2 pick Pat Riley to the Atlanta Falcons Monday and reached an injury settlement with Jeremy Lincoln Tuesday… Lincoln's buy-out cost the Bears two games' of Lincoln's 1996 base, or about $100,000. In addition, the Bears must count the 1996 and 1997 pro-rated portions of Lincoln's $600,000 signing bonus against this year's cap, for another $400,000 hit. Lincoln's cap number for 1996 would have been $953,600. His exit fees amount to about $500,000… The Lincoln deal does potentially free up an estimated $915,000, Lincoln's projected base, for 1997.

John Mullin, Arlington Heights Daily Herald: the Seattle Seahawks blinked and started a domino chain that ended late Tuesday with quarterback Rick Mirer agreeing to a new three-year contract worth about $11.4 million as a member of the Chicago Bears. The Seahawks, needing salary cap space after two big free-agent signings and anxious not to lose the 11th overall pick of this year's draft that the Bears were willing to trade for Mirer, agreed Tuesday afternoon to throw in a 1997 fourth-round pick along with Mirer. The Bears, who were holding firm at getting a new four-year contract with Mirer before finalizing the trade, relaxed enough with the extra compensation to do a three-year deal that, with a signing bonus of more than $2.5 million, will cost them less than a $3 million salary cap hit for 1997. Mirer, who is forgoing his shot at the free agency market next year with the new deal, agreed to continue discussing adding a fourth year on the contract later this week… The salary cap number was the Bears' other chief concern. The contract as it stands will use slightly more than $2.6 million of the Bears' approximately $9 million available under this year's cap.

Wisconsin State Journal: Mirer was traded last March from the Seattle Seahawks to the Bears after agreeing to a restructured contract that paid him a signing bonus of $ 2.6 million and base salaries of $ 1.805 million last year, $ 2.295 million in 1and $ 3.3 million for 1999.

Mark Potash, Chicago Sun-Times: He was paid nearly $5 million in bonuses and salary in return for one of the worst seasons by a quarterback in NFL history… The Bears decided not to keep Mirer unless the contract terms were renegotiated for the final two years. The Bears offered two proposals: $1.44 million (the maximum 30 percent cut on his 1998 salary of $2.2 million) with $400,000 in incentives or $1.55 million without incentives. Both offers gave Mirer the option of voiding the deal in March. But after intimating willingness to do that, Mirer balked at the idea of a pay cut and became intent on getting guarantees for the final year of the contract.

Chicago Sun-Times: The Bears lost $6.5 million in salary-cap space to signing bonuses for players no longer on the team: Rick Mirer $1.735 million

CBSSports.com: The five-time Pro Bowl defensive end and top free-agent prize agreed Friday to a six-year deal worth potentially $91.5 million. Agent Carl Carey said a record $42 million is guaranteed, with Peppers earning $20 million in the first year and $40.5 million over the first three. The deal includes incentives for sacks, making the Pro Bowl and winning Defensive Player of the Year.

Peter King, SI: Peppers compensation w/Chi--2010: $20m; 2011: $11.5m; 2012: $9m; 2013: $13m; 2014: $14m; 2015: $16.5m ...All $40.5m in 1st 3 yrs guaranteed.

Page 85: Chicago Cap/Contract Notes - · Web viewJason La Canfora, Washington Post: the Skins wil kick in $500,000 to the Bears towards that $5 million bonus, so Arch Deluxe will count $4.5

Mike Florio, PFT: Peppers gets $20 million in 2010 (all but a $100,000 workout bonus is guaranteed). But the $22 million in guaranteed money that he's due to receive in 2011 and 2012 is guaranteed for injury only. This means that the Bears can decide after the 2010 season to cut Peppers for skill reasons -- and they'll owe him nothing. Specifically, Peppers' 2011 base salary of $900,000 is guaranteed for injury at the time it's signed; on February 10, 2011, it becomes guaranteed for skill. Also, a $10.5 million roster bonus due in 2011 is guaranteed for injury at signing. On February 10, 2011, it becomes guaranteed for skill. An $8.9 million base salary in 2012 is guaranteed for injury at signing and then for skill as of February 10, 2012. Finally, $1.8 million of Peppers' 2013 base salary is guaranteed for injury only. So, basically, if the Bears decide before February 10, 2011 that Peppers isn't what they thought he'd be, they can treat it as a one-year, $20 million deal, and walk away. Also, by our calculations the actual guarantee is $42.0 million, which comes from a $6.5 million signing bonus, a $12.5 million roster bonus in 2010, a $900,000 guaranteed base salary in 2010, a $10.5 million guaranteed roster bonus in 2011, a $900,000 guaranteed base salary in 2011, a guaranteed base salary of $8.9 million in 2012, and a $1.8 million base salary guarantee in 2013.

Michael C Wright, ESPN Chicago: With Peppers due a $10.5 million roster bonus for 2011, the Bears restructured the defensive end's contract on Feb. 23 to reduce his salary cap number from $12 million to $4.3 million in anticipation of the cap returning once a new collective bargaining is reached between the NFL and the players union. The Bears did it by changing Peppers' $10.5 million roster bonus into a signing bonus so they could prorate that $10.5 million over the life of the contract, which runs through 2015.

John Mullin, Arlington Heights Daily Herald: Key for both sides in the Carl Simpson contract, which was completed Wednesday night, were the timing of the deal and the signing bonus of $900,000, considerably higher than normal for a two-year deal totaling about $2 million. The reason: the salary cap. By concluding the deal before the end of the regular season, the Bears are permitted to include 1996 in prorating the signing bonus, dividing it over three years instead of the contract's two. The Bears were thus able to pay $300,000 of the Simpson package with remaining 1996 cap dollars and save themselves $150,000 under the 1997 cap and the same amount in 1998.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: Slauson, who is expected to start at one of the guard positions, received a $100,000 signing bonus. The Bears also guaranteed $200,000 of his base salary of $715,000.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: Slauson’s four-year contract is worth a base value of $12.8 million with $4.9 million guaranteed. He will earn $4 million in 2014 after getting just $1.1 million in 2013. Slauson had an $815,000 salary with the Bears and triggered $285,000 in incentives this past season. The Bears constructed his new contract in a creative way. The Jags had offered a $4 million signing bonus, four years at $1.9 million, and $100,000 a year to the Alonzo Spellman Foundation. The Bears have challenged the interpretation of the matching charitable clauses which say that, up to $100,000 a year, they will match the player's fundraising efforts. Mike Florio, PFT: it was widely reported that the Bears had signed cornerback Charles Tillman to a six-year, $41.5 million deal, with $18.5 million guaranteed… In reality, the Tillman deal is a five-year, $29 million extension. The extra money that's been reported comes from a phony final year with a base salary in the $8 million to $9 million range. It's extremely unlikely that he'll really get that much cash that year, at age 32.

The Bears have constructed the bulk of their offseason deals without signing bonuses, but Tillman did receive a $500,000 bonus when he signed with the team on Friday after an unsuccessful visit to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the beginning of free agency. Melissa Isaacson, Chicago Tribune: he signed a five-year, $7.75 million contract that will pay him a signing bonus of $5.5 million and a total of $10 million if he meets incentives… Urlacher's deal will pay him a base salary of $300,000, $375,000, $450,000, $525,000 and $600,000 with escalators in the fourth and fifth years.

Don Pierson, Chicago Tribune: the NFL Players Association recognizes the contract at $56.6 million… He gets a $13 million signing bonus paid over the first 1{ years, plus roster bonuses of $1 million for 2003, $2 million for 2004 and $3 million for 2005, plus base salaries of $1.05 million, $1.75 million, and $1.25 million the next three years. What makes the package good for the Bears is they have tied up their best player for life, with the base salary flattening out at $3.95 million for 2006, 2007 and 2008, rising to $4.95 million in 2009. All those years are without roster bonuses

Viking Update, Scout.com: While technically a contract extension, Urlacher – who signed a nine-year, $56.7 million deal with a $13 million signing bonus – has a cap number of $5.1 million this year. If the Bears intend to sign anyone else, expect to see this year’s number re-worked for cap reasons. That being said, VU has been told the “real” contract is seven years for $40.2 million. Worst case scenario, take the latter figure to the bank.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune: Urlacher's contract will be an issue. His salary-cap number is irrelevant in what everyone believes will be an uncapped year. What is relevant is the actual money he's to be paid this year. Urlacher has a base salary of $6.825 million and when you tack on a $1.3 million roster bonus and a $500,000 workout bonus, all of a sudden he's on the books in 2010 for $8.625 million. It will be interesting to see if the Bears ask for a little of that back, particularly in light of the team's negotiation with him before the 2008 season.

Mike Florio, PFT: Walker will make a base salary of $1.9 million in 2007, a $600,000 increase over what he was due to earn in his prior contract. Years two through four average roughly $3.5 million per year, with the option bonus included in that number. The fifth year, per the source, is a sham -- which means that it likely carries an unrealistically high salary. It also has been reported that the fifth-round deal that the Bears gave to Buffalo for Walker can upgrade to a fourth-rounder based on the number of snaps that Walker takes this year.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Sun-Times: The Bears agreed to go to the table with Walker, and he received a $500,000 signing bonus on a five-year, $25 million deal that pays him $1.4million this season. The big payday is to come in March in the form of the $5.2 million roster bonus.

Brad Biggs, Chicago Sun-Times: Walker is due a $5.2 million roster bonus March 4 and his salary cap figure for 2008 is $6.5 million.
