Schedule of Workshop
Details of the Workshop:
Preamble: Department of Electrical Engineering, CGPIT has organized two-day workshop on “High
Voltage Engineering” sponsored by Uka Tarsadia University. Total 133 participants
participated in this Workshop. The inauguration ceremony of Workshop was started by UTU
song followed by lamp lighting and prayer to seek the blessings of almighty. As per tradition
of CGPIT, all the dignitaries were given a warm welcome and were felicitated to express
respect and gratitude towards them for devoting their valuable time and gracing the
workshop. The dignitaries that graced the inauguration ceremony of workshop were Dr. N. C.
Shah (Director, CGPIT), Prof. V. K. Shah (Principle of Diwaliba Polytechnique), Ms. Purvi
Tandel (Head of CO/IT Department, CGPIT), Mr. Gunvant Solanki (Incharge Head of Civil
Engg. Department), Mr. Ankit Desai (Incharge Head of Mech./Auto Department), Prof.
Manish Sinha( Assistant Professor, EE Department, BVM Engineering College), Dr. Ritesh
Patel (Department of Electrical Engineering, G. H. Patel College of Engineering and
Technology). The dignitaries and expert were felicitated by the coordinators of the workshop.
Prof. Karmani Rajput gave a brief introduction about the workshop. She introduced the
experts and expressed her views about the importance of workshop. The H.O.D of electrical
department, Prof. Rakesh Gajre gave the welcome speech and gave an overview of the power
system and its importance in the industries.
The Honourable Director of CGPIT, Dr. N.C. Shah gave the welcome speech. He motivated
the students and faculties for participating in technical events like short term training
program, workshop, expert talk, etc. He also congratulated and appreciated the efforts made
by the Electrical department for organizing such workshop. He shared his knowledge about
the necessity of power system in industries in present scenario and its importance in their
career. Prof. Karmani Rajput gave the vote of thanks.
Session Detail: All the sessions were very interactive and laid a very good impact on the audience.
Session-1: Lightning and Overvoltage Protection
Session-2: DESIGN of HVDC Circuit
Session-3: Lab Session
Session-4: Condition Monitoring
Session-5: Partial Discharge in Electrical Equipment
Session-6: Lab Session
• Lightning and Overvoltage Protection
Dr. Ritesh Patel started with the basic concepts of power system and motivated students to
learn things in detail. He discussed Lightning mechanism, Effects of lightning on Power
system, Protection from Lightning, Shielding wires, Ground rods and Counterpoise,
Lightning Arrester, Surge Absorber, Insulation coordination in much detail. He also
showcased the importance of HVDC and requirement of the engineers in generating higher
voltages to compensate the requirement of the nation.
• DESIGN of HVDC Circuit
Prof. Manish Sinha focused on the advanced generation techniques of HVDC such as
utilising Voltage multiplier circuit, Marx generator and so on. He also discussed Designing
and simulation of HVDC circuit with detailed calculation. He also touched basics of impulse
voltage generator and stated it as a research area.
• Lab Session
In this session Mr. Jay Patel, Mr. Hiren Sidhpuria, Mr. Bhargav Patel, Mrs. Chand Thakor
conducted lab session in the labs using V-lab (Virtual Lab) and gave practical glimpse of the
titles covered in the theory.
• Condition Monitoring
In this session Mr. Chinmay Desai has discussed regarding how to find failure rate of the
machine and protecting those machines from heavy fault and frequent maintenance
requirement of machines like Induction Motor and Transformers.
• Partial Discharge in Electrical Equipment
In this session Mr. Jay Patel discussed basics of partial discharge in the static and rotating
machine and its impact on the cables and transmission line. He emphasised on the selection
and co-ordination of equipments for the least fault condition and best performance.
• Lab Session
In lab session, Mr. Jay Patel, Mr. Hiren Sidhpuria, Mr. Bhargav Patel, Mrs. Chand Thakor
showed practical experiments of High Voltage equipments starting from oil testing of
transformer to impulse generation. They started from the basic rules and safety measures
required in the lab. The demos were already prepared and participants were showed. And
then it was open for general discussion and questions.
