November News

Dear Mustang Families,

It’s November already? It must be, because our daylight hours are getting much shorter and the smells of the season abound. I love November because cooler weather means it is time for warm and flavorful foods. There is nothing like a warm pumpkin muffin with a cream cheese center or the smell of herb rubbed pot roast in the crockpot. Yes, I said crockpot. As a family we are always looking for time saving opportunities and benefit from settling into a productive routine. As a parent of a middle school student, I see my son becoming more practiced at his teacher's expectations and classroom practices. With lots of encouragement from me, he has begun to check his own grades on his portal account and let us know when he needs to retake or get extra help. As a previous teacher and now an administrator, I know it is important to continue these practices for the rest of his schooling. Students always need us to engage with them about their grades and school activities. This communicates our expectation for doing well in school and that we care about their education. The end of the semester will creep up on us as the holi-days approach. It is important to continue to ask about their grades and encourage them to visit with their teachers about grades and assignments.

The month of November is full of opportunities and important celebrations for our school. The fall sports season is coming to an end and our winter sports season begins. We just celebrated our Students of the Month. Our annual Veterans Day Program will be held on Friday, November 11. 8th grade families should have received information regarding this program. Our 8th graders will also be learning about and visiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum.

We look forward to continuing to work together to provide your child with the best educational experience. On behalf of our staff, we hope you have a great Thanksgiving holiday. I am very thankful for the oppor-tunity to work with supportive families, incredibly talented children, and the dedicated and creative staff at Cheyenne Middle School.

Hello Cheyenne Families! Fall is finally here!!!

The PTO Abby Candle Fall Fundraiser is in full swing and your items will be delivered just in time for the holidays! Speaking of

the holidays, as you are doing your holiday shopping on Amazon, please make sure you are registered to donate to the Chey-

enne Middle School PTO through Amazon Smile. This is an easy way to donate money to our school without spending anything

extra!

We are thankful for your support in all of our fundraisers. Your giving allowed the PTO the ability to award several teacher

grants that will enhance learning for students across the board.

We are excited about the opportunity to work hand in hand with you as we support our Cheyenne teachers and administrators. PTO Meetings are usually held the second Tuesday of every month. Our next general meeting will be Tuesday, November 8 at 1:15 in the Media Center. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, feel free to send an email to [email protected]. Dear Parents and Families:

Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills kids learn, it is the one you can influence the most.

We invite you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides families the op-portunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is part of a reading event that brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they’ll get.

Reading is vital to every child’s success, and it’s the door opener to the 21st century for all children. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair. Hope to see you there!

In-Library Book Fair Dates: Nov. 15 – Nov. 18 Shopping Hours: 7:50 a.m. – 2:40 p.m. Tuesday – Friday

If you’re all booked up during Book Fair week (or just want to keep shopping), be sure to visit the Book Fair online at http://www.scholastic.com/bf/cheyennems. The online Book Fair is available for an extended time from Nov. 1st – 21st.

Find an expanded selection of books for the whole family—preschool to adults

Share your Book Fair with family and friends by sending wish lists or eCards

All orders ship to school for FREE and each purchase benefits our school

for the day. If you have any questions please contact me asap. Those who are selected will attend the

honor band clinic and concert on January 6, and 7, 2016, in Norman, OK.

The 6th grade band will be traveling on November 2, 2016 to hear the Oklahoma City Philharmon-

ic. This is a wonderful opportunity for our newest instrumentalists to hear professional musicians perform

on their instruments as well as in a full ensemble. Students will need to bring a sack lunch to school with

them for this field trip.

the movie.

The 7th grade band will have an after school rehearsal on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 from 2:45 –

the winter concert. Students will need to have their own transportation home following the rehearsal.

The 8th grade band will have an after school pizza rehearsal on Monday, December 12, 2016 from

2:45 – 4:15 p.m. Please mark this on your calendars, this will allow us an extended time, to make any fi-

nal preparations for our winter concert. Students will need to have their own transportation home follow-

ing the rehearsal.

The 6th, 7th and 8th grade winter concert is scheduled for Thursday, December 15, 2016,

at 6:30 pm at North High School in the auditorium. This is a graded performance as well as an oppor-

tunity for everyone to hear how hard your children have been working on their instruments. Please invite

everyone you know! Immediately following the Cheyenne Winter Concert, the Edmond North High

School Bands will hold their winter concert. Please feel free to stay and enjoy both concerts.

The 7th grade band will be traveling to share holiday carols on our band instruments on December

From the Orchestra Podium The orchestra was very busy this past October and November with many fun performances and events: 6

th grade

Demo Concert, Barrage8, OKC Philharmonic Youth Concert, North Central Honors Orchestra. Great job to all who participated in those events!

Just around the corner, the Cheyenne Middle School orchestra will present its Winter Concert on Thursday De-cember 8

th at 6:30 p.m. in the Edmond North High School auditorium. The concert will feature our three orchestras

and the award winning Edmond North High School Orchestra. Also on this concert is the annual silent basket auc-tion sponsored by the Edmond North Orchestra Parent Boosters. Please come early to join the fun and support the future of the Cheyenne Orchestra!

Finally, as we approach the gift-giving season, please consider a gift that will better your child’s musical experience. A new set of “Dominant”, “Zyex”, or “Helicore” brand strings or other accessory makes an excellent stocking stuffer. These strings along with many other orchestra ideas can be found at any of our metro music vendors or online at www.sharmusic.com.
