    1. In what ways does your media product use, develop orchallenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In our documentary, we have used the forms and the conventions of realmedia products which we have learned. Interviews are very important inour documentary and we were happy that we interviewed two radio DJs inthe studios, these make our documentary more professional and enrichthe mise- en- scene.

However, one of our interviewees could not interview with us at thattime, we tried hard to interview him via e-mail.It would have been better in person as the audience would be able to see

his interaction, his involvement and be more interested in the subject forseeing the professional who is a Band Manager. Was hard to get themessage across via email as it is quite detached compared to the otherinterviews, we used a photo so the audience could put a face to the

interviewee but it wouldve been better to see his facial expressions, hearhis voice and experience the real interview.

Stills from our documentary- Craigs interviewVox pop is also important to the documentary, so we filmed vox pops

around the college as our target audience are aged 16-24.

We used medium shot when filming our formal interviews and our voxpops normally used medium close up shot. In order to follow theconventions of filming vox pop, our interviewees were not looking to thecamera when we filmed.

These camera shots have been used by the documentary called Super sizeme. We have chosen to follow these conventions as the medium shotallows the audience to see the environment where the interview is takingplace and represents the background of the interviewees. Also, MediumClose up shot is common convention used in documentaries, as it showsfacial expressions and allows the audience to be more involved.

Additionally, the shots of computer screen were used for filming the

websites. This shot was also used in Super Size Me when it showing thewebsites. This allows audienceto see things through the directors eyes sothe audience can understand the message and therefore makes it morerealistic.

    Stills from our documentary- websites

Throughout the documentary a voiceover is used, this allows the

audience to stay fully informed throughout, it is also used to ask questionsduring the interviews.

Two tracks were used for the background music this was due to thelimited time and to not confuse the audience if we had included more. Thefirst track is used in the introduction, and has an electric theme; this wasso it matched the theme of the documentary, it created an excited andup-tempo mood. The second track is more classic rock that is steady andrepetitive but still up-beat and quite relaxed so it fades into thebackground and does not overpower the documentary, and assists themessage of the documentary.

In Editing, Superimpositions are used in opening of the documentarythis introduces the topic to our audience and creates an impact as it isword by word.

It shows the interviewers are related to our topic, we also usedsuperimposition in the interview of the band manager, Craig, as he

answered our questions in the e-mail, so his answers and his photo areplaced on top of the background image. Also used to identify the interviewees, as we did not have the face to

face interview with Craig the use of superimposition as well as Stephreading what he said, allows the audience to fully understand what he issaying and therefore, almost compensates him not being there.

Our documentary has followed the forms of real documentaries.Compare to Super Size Me, our interviews also had the titles of the

    Our documentary Super SizeMe

professional, but ours were simpler than Super Size Me. The structure ofCraigs interview was similar to the introduction of Johns interview in theSuper Size Me, as they both showed the text on screen with the voiceover. Onthe other hand, our documentary had less animation and footage than supersize me. Also, supersize me had a lot of hand held shot as it was more livelyand funny, by contrast, ours were conservative.

Overall, I was quite pleased with our documentary as it lookedprofessional and it was such as a real documentary. Most of theconventions of real media product were appealed on our documentarycompletely. However, I hoped that we would have the animation in thedocumentary to make it look more perfect as Super Size Me had a lof ofanimation, this attempt might enrich our documentary. I like the interviewsmost as the sound quality was great and the pace of interviews wassmooth, and they made our documentary to be more professional. Moreover, Idid not like the text of fighting for fame as it had no effects and it was toocrude and simple.

How effective is the combination of your main product andancillary tasks?

  • 8/14/2019 Cheuk' s Evaluation

    7/19

The article was produced to promote our main product which was ourdocumentary, in the article, we placed images to attract the readerscuriosity, for example, there are two radio DJs, one from Kerrang radiostation, and one from Heart FM radio station, both are popular, by addingtheir images our audience will recognise their status in the music industry.

The band managers image was very smart and cool, attracting teenagersas he is stylish when it comes to his overall image.

At the beginning of the article, it said Were so used to hearing musicon the radio, but do we really think about how the artists got where theyare today?, the concept behind this was to show the relationship betweenradio and the music industry, therefore, our documentary had theinterviews at the radio studios, it made our documentary more credible.Additionally, Social networking sites have become popular in todays

society, teenagers use facebook daily, the article mentions these socialnetworks and the popular show, X-Factor. Teenagers and music loverswould be interested in our documentary as X-Factor is another way forunsigned bands or artists to get into the music industry.

Moreover, we chose Kerrang! Radio to release our radio trailer. We hadKerrangs DJ Alex s interview, it was effective for Kerrang! Radio topromote our documentary. Furthermore, we chose 4Music to be ourchannel for showing our documentary, 4Music might have a cooperativerelationship with Kerrange as 4Musics website links to Kerrangs website,it shows our documentary is linked to our radio trailer and article, andthere was no doubt that our documentary was promoted by our radiotrailer and article effectively.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

  • 8/14/2019 Cheuk' s Evaluation

    8/19

I have learnt a lot from our audiences feedback as our audienceprovided us with constructive advice. I was pleased that our audienceagreed that our documentary followed the conventions used in realdocumentaries. 12 individuals gave us a score of 3 and 6 individuals gaveus a score of 4 in regards to how professional it was, I think this result isfair as I believe we still had room for improvement. Also, 63.6%of ourtarget audience would have liked to continue watching our documentaryas they felt it was interesting and informative, it identified with our targetaudience. But 36.4% of people were not interested in the subject of ourdocumentary. However, I felt this result was acceptable as this group ofpeople were just not interested in the music and therefore gave us a faircomment.

Additionally, I was happy that 55% of the audience thought ourdocumentary was about the music industry and 25% of people said itdiscusses the issues around unsigned band. 20% of the audience felt itwas about Facebook and MySpace. Our documentary also looked at issues

relating to the music industry, including MySpace and Facebook and

  • 8/14/2019 Cheuk' s Evaluation

    9/19

discussing unsigned bands. These results show our subject.

We asked the audience what age group they felt the documentary

appeals to, 55% of people believed that our target audience was aged 16-18 and 35% of people believed our target audience were aged 19-21. Iwas pleased that this result fits with our target audience which wasoriginally aged 16-25 years old.

I was surprised that 70% of audiences liked the interviews with DJsmost, they felt that these interviews were professional and interesting;also, they liked the DJs who we interviewed. 30% of the audience liked ourbackground footage, music and editing. However, 35% of the audience didnot like the voiceover. They did not like the voiceover because it was toofast and they couldnt concentrate on the documentary. The documentarymay have portrayed our message better if we had used a male voiceover, this is because a mans voice is steady and consistent and therefore wouldnot go up and down, and may have made it easier to concentrate on what

was being said, therefore not missing the information on screen.

After watching the introduction to the documentary, 45% of theaudience learnt more about the use of MySpace and Facebook, in thesense that these social websites were useful in regards to more then justsocial networking. 25% of the audience knew more about the musicindustry and that it was hard to get in to. Also, 15% of the audience learntmore about the operation of radio stations and the work of the DJs. 15% ofthe audience understood that the UK has many unsigned bands and it is

not easy for them to get into the music industry.

There were 7 people who would like to change the voiceover, and 6people who wanted to edit our pace as it was too fast. In addition 2 peoplethought that we should find the unsigned band for interviewing and 5people provided completely random ideas.I agreed that we could have an unsigned band interview; it would berelevant to our documentary. These results suggested that our voiceovercould be better and we could slow down our pace of the documentary as itwas too fast.

Furthermore, all audiences said that they would watch the documentarybased on the article and the trailer. The majority of our feedback said thatthey would change the first few words of our article and that we shouldhave used more colour to make it more appealing. However, overall therewas not much else they would change.

After reading the feedback, I found we could have made manyimprovements to make our documentary more professional and to pleaseour audience. The data is useful and very helpful for us to improve, we cansee how successful our documentary is and what we could do to improveit. The audience felt our documentary was informative and it showed thatwe did what the audience expected.

How did you use media technologies in the construction andresearch, planning and evaluation stages?

For the construction, we used Carnon Hard Drive Camera to film ourbackground footage and interviews, it also helped us to record thevoiceovers using a microphone for our documentary and the radio trailer.

The camera we used was provided by the college so we learnt how to usethe camera from the technicians before actually filming. Moreover, I usedmy own digital camera to take some extra photos when filming during theinterview in the radio studio because it might be helpful for our editing.

We used Mac computers to edit our documentary, in the beginning, I thinkit was difficult for me as the operation was different from PCs which I hadpreviously used, but I was able to use it easily when processing. Mac isprofessional and it helps people access to high technologies.

I took this photo at Kerrang radiostations reception by using the digitalcamera and it was used in ourdocumentary.

    14/19

We created our documentary by using a programme on the Mac, called

Final Cut Express. We edited the footage and the interviews in Final CutExpress. We made a layer effect on Craigs interview where we put hisquote and photo on top of the footage. During this, we received supportand help from the technicians so we completed our documentary quiteeasily. We also cut the stills from final cut express for our evaluation.

    Final Cut Express:

We used Garage Band to produce our radio trailer and it was easy towork but we should cut out the images of the clips in the final cut expressand then exported the audio to Garage Band.

    Garage Band:

Microsoft Word was widely used on the construction, research andevaluation. We typed Craigs quotes in Microsoft Word first then edited itin Final cut express and we typed the content of article by using MicrosoftWord. We made our audience questionnaires and audience feedbacks inMicrosoft for researching our target audience. Furthermore, we requiredMicrosoft Word to write our evaluation first, so that we could make sureour spelling and grammar were correct.Audience Questionnaires:

I used Microsoft Excel for creating the graphs of the questionnaire resultsand the feedback results. It can show the clearly and legible results on theevaluation by using the graphs.

We used Photoshop CS3 and InDesign when producing the article, we werequite proficient in Photoshop and InDesign as we used them to create amagazine article in our AS-Level as well.PhotoshopCS3 and our article:

Websites were very useful for our documentary, there are some shots ofYouTube, MySpace and Facebook to show the information.

We also postedthe researches about documentaries and 4music channel. And weuploaded the audience questionnaires and the audience feedback to theblog. We will also put our evaluation on the blog.

    Our Blog:

When we were uploading our drafts and resources to the blog, we usedthe scanner to scan our stuffs to the PC.

    Storyboard draft:

After we finished our documentary and radio trailer, we burnt them ontothe DVDs for keeping copies.

We used a variety of media technologies to construct our documentary, radio trailer and article. We also used these media technologies toresearch our documentaries target audience, planning our documentaryand showing our editing progress. Besides, our evaluation also requiredthe use of media technologies.
