FALL 2018 | VOL. 11, NO. 2

You discover a new bump on your body and you ask yourself three things: What is that? Could it be cancer? How fast can I get rid of it? Before panic sets in, remember that most of these seemingly mysteriously occurring lumps are not cause for concern. Numerous medical conditions can cause lumps and bumps to appear on the surface or below the skin.

Not-so-serious lumps are usually soft, grow in size and pain with activity and diminish with rest, are located in the fat layer of the skin and are mobile—move or change when touched.

Bumps that are cancerous are typically large, hard, painless and appear spontaneously. These masses typically grow in size steadily over time. Cancerous lumps that can be felt from the outside of your body can appear in the breast, or neck, but also in the arms and legs.

Let’s review the most common lumps and bumps and better understand when you should seek medical advice.

BREAST LUMPS can be caused by infections, injuries, non-cancerous growths, and cancer. Breast cancer usually causes no pain. The symptoms of breast cancer include painless breast lumps, nipple discharge, and inflammation of the skin of the breast. In young, fit and healthy women, 80% of lumps are benign. A fibroadenoma is a small harmless lump made from glandular tissue, which feels quite firm and moves around. The cause is unknown, but they’re common in 20- to 30-something women. Breast cysts, on the other hand, feel more jelly-like and tender and often affect women in their 30s and 40s. They can appear almost overnight, often prior to menstruation when breast tissue tends to be lumpier.

Always get breast lumps checked. If you notice a change in the size, shape or feel of your breasts that’s unusual for you, or you have some puckering, dimpling or redness of the skin, or nipple discharge, see your doctor. The same goes if you have pain and discomfort in just one breast.

BOTTOM BUMPS are often hemorrhoids. You may feel a sore lump, or notice blood on toilet paper. Constipation and straining are common causes and women tend to get hemorrhoids during pregnancy. Over-the-counter creams resolve most hemorrhoids, but if they’re persistent, problematic or protruding seek clinical advice. Your doctor may refer you to a surgeon to get them removed.

VAGINAL CYSTS are firm lumps on the wall of the vagina. They are normally about the size of a pea or smaller. Vaginal inclusion cysts are most common and sometimes form after childbirth or injury to the vagina. Vaginal cysts usually aren’t painful. They’re rarely a cause for concern unless they result in discomfort during sex. Occasionally, vaginal cysts need to be drained or removed surgically.

As we age, more lumps and bumps seem to appear. It’s a good idea to see a doctor if you’re unsure about any changes to your body. It’s time to make an appointment if you have a new lump that doesn’t go away in a few weeks, that is larger than two inches (about the size of a golf ball), grows larger, or is painful. Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate treatments including rest, medicine, or surgery.
