Dear Colleagues,

Education, self-care/self-evaluation, and experience in the massage and bodywork fi eld are three keys to a successful and long-lasting career.

Self-care and self-evaluation are critical to our success. In order to have the energy, stamina, and presence to give to others, we need to take care of both our physical health and our mental health. In addition to good nutrition, exercise, and receiving hands-on work, allowing time to rest and relax is important. We need quiet time to consider how we are doing in our massage or bodywork practice. Are we happy with our results? Do we have the kind of clients we desire to work with? Do we have enough clients, or perhaps too many? Are we bored or excited with what we are offering our clients? The answers to these questions may change as we develop through the experiences we are having in our profession.

As we work with more and more clients in different settings, we begin to perceive our level of competency, and become eager to expand that level. Many therapists fi nd that they want to explore a wide variety of modalities, broadening and building their knowledge in the fi eld. Usually one or two modalities really intrigue us, and in those we seek a greater level of depth and competency, perhaps even mastery.

Professional education allows us to respond to the needs and preferences we identify throughout our career. We can learn better methods for self-care, more ways to promote and manage our practices, gain help in communicating with clients ethically and effectively, deepen our ability to be present. We can explore a multitude of hands-on skills from introductory classes to full certifi cation programs.
