we need our readers to do is like Cherubsnet on Facebook and send us a picture of your child, along with their name and age and we will enter them into the draw. The winner will be the ‘face’ of our May edition and will get a free photoshoot and goodie bag. We are not choosing the winner or asking for votes on this, we believe that all children are worthy winners so we are running it as a draw so not be biased.

As always, we appreciate each and every one of our readers. So thanks for taking the time out to explore Cherubs. Our next edition will be out in May and until then, have a great Easter.

cherubschatKeeping parents up to date

Make sure your kids are Bright Kids!

building strong partnerships with parents as well as engaging them in the life of the nursery is one of the key aims of Bright Kids Day Nursery in Lynchwood. They use their unique

Parental Nursery Cam to allow parents to see their child, reassuring them that they have settled well in the nursery and are enjoying their time with the staff and other children.

The nursery held lots of events in 2012 and will continue to do so into 2013. Last year’s favourites were a ‘Mini Olympics’ and a cultural evening. “It was a very exciting year for us and we are planning more events this year, starting with our monthly Coff ee Morning,” said Claire Smalley, Manager.

Childcare costs are always an issue for parents and with that in mind, Bright Kids had a bright idea. They are currently running an off er which will reduce their fees to £150.00 per week for 50 hours.

Returning to work after having a child can be a diffi cult decision, but Bright Kids Day Nursery are helping to make sending children to nursery the best option especially with the teams’

bright Kids nursery in lynchwood, Peterborough off ers more than just childcare.

main focus being education. “Without compromising the level of care, we are introducing exciting new programmes including ‘Home learning diaries’. We have also joined Le Club Francais so the children will be taught the beginnings of the French language,” said Claire Smalley, Manager.

Bright Kids aim is to be known as an educational establishment and not just an ordinary childcare provider, achieved through children’s desire to learn, develop and thrive in their stimulating environment’. For more information please call Bright Kids Day Nursery on 01733 361290 and quote Cherubs.

Let’s get cooking!Kids Country supports schools cooking campaign

the East of England Agricultural Society’s new education programme Kids Country, will be giving schools a helping hand in the kitchen in the light of the government’s announcement that compulsory cooking lessons are to

be made a part of the National Curriculum. From September next year, cooking lessons will be made compulsory for

children aged 7 to fourteen who will now learn how to make healthy food and understand the basics of nutrition.

On 5th July, a Food and Farming day at Peterborough Showground will incorporate food stories and activities including: growing mushrooms, pressing rapeseed into oil and making sausages.

All supported by many businesses and organisations introduced in the local food and farming sector.

Schools and outdoor education advisers wanting to be part of any Kids Country events should contact Sandra Lauridsen at the Showground on 01733 363514 or via email [email protected]

Baby boomMaternity services at Peterborough and stamford Hospitals nHs Foundation trust have successfully passed a rigorous ‘standards of care’ assessment to retain the Cnst level 2 status.

the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST) assesses NHS Trusts against a strict set of standards to be assured that

their professional teams are promoting and using eff ective risk management and high standards of clinical care to minimise the risk of harm to patients.

For maternity care there are a separate set of 50 standards in place. Trusts can score from Level 0 to Level 3 – with Level 3 being the highest. Following its Level 2 success, work is already under way for the maternity service to achieve Level 3 status in the next two years.

The busy maternity unit, based at Peterborough City Hospital, is fast heading towards a milestone of delivering 5,000 babies a year by the end of March 2013.

healthKeep your cherub healthy and

happy this spring with our guide

It’s 3am, everyone in the house is awake, and you’ve tried everything you can, and your child still has a temperature.

A smiling, content and responsive child is probably not very unwell, despite having a fever. A pale, less responsive child is likely to be more unwell. If your child is needing to breath faster, passing less urine, has a hot swollen joint or has a non-blanching purple rash, they are likely to need immediate medical attention.

So what can we do if our child has a fever? NHS direct is a useful source of information, and can be found on www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk or 0845 4647. Your GP is probably the next place to go to thereafter.

Once your GP has made a diagnosis, what can you do to help your little one feel better? Paracetamol and ibuprofen can be given to children, where appropriate but may not change the temperature. Treat the child, not the fever. A child with a temperature of 39 degrees centigrade, who is busy running around putting jam on your cat, is likely to be less unwell than a child with a temperature of 38 who is pale and unresponsive. If in doubt, seek trained clinical advice.

We have some great ideas for your clever little ones to keep them interested in learning

roosterbank is reinventing pocket money by bringing it online and making it easy for families to manage in a fun, safe and fl exible way.

Roosterbank gives parents a highly practical solution to manage their child’s pocket money, off ering children a sense of personal responsibility for this money through their own online account.

The site combines essential tools for day to day saving and spending, along with two age-related web communities providing fun, educational games as well as rewards and information. Roosterbank helps children develop the skills and confi dence to save and manage money, preparing them for the day when they take control of their own bank account.www.roosterbank.com

Putting together the partsThis great new piece from Janod will get all budding medics up to scratch with theirbody parts! 98 magnetic body parts and 10 diff erent languages to learn them in, now there’s a challenge! £30.00 from www.pookieandpeach.com

Having a shy child should not be a barrier tomaking friends. If they want guidance from you, suggest that they invite some classmates to your house. The smaller group will mean they will have a chance to talk to each child and get to know them away from school life. You could introduce them to hobbies where they can make friends with children who enjoy the same activities. Going with a friend will make the new activity less daunting.

Another way you could help them combat shyness is to suggest to their teacher that they work in a team. Sharing ideas and learning together will be more fun and your child will get to share the responsibility of the project. Finally, talk about who they are and how much you love who they are. www.thekidscoach.org.ukWin a copy of ‘The Parent’s Toolkit’ by Naomi Richards. Learn the lingo!Top 5 benefi ts of learning languages early:

1. Better academic performance: It has been proven that children who study foreign languages achieve better exam grades than their monolingual peers.

2. Increased confi dence: Children who speak another language are more confi dent and interact more easily with people from other countries.

3. Improved career prospects: In the current economic climate the more skills we have, the better our chances of fi nding a good job. In our globalised world children who have learnt to speak another language will be highly sought after by employers.

4. Greater understanding of their fi rst language: Children acquire a wider range of vocabulary and understand more easily how their own language works.

5. Cultural awareness: Children can make friends with people from other cultures and travel becomes much more rewarding.

For the year ending 5 april 2013, many individuals will be forced to fi ll in self-assessment forms for the fi rst time to take account of government changes.

The shake-up of the Child Benefi t arrangements will see an increase in the amount of income tax paid by families with an adult earning more than £50,000 where child benefi t has been received after 7 January 2013. Where the income of one adult exceeds £60,000, the payment will be clawed back. Many of those earning over the threshold will need to fi ll in self-assessment tax returns.

Some experts have warned it may be dangerous to opt out of receiving the Child Benefi t in case your income drops below £60,000 or, in the case of stay at home parents, to ensure they continue receiving a credit towards their national insurance record, which aff ects their state pension, and which is linked to the receipt of child benefi t.

As an example: a couple with two children receives Child Benefi t of £1,752 a year. For every £100 one of the couple earns above £50,000, they will pay an extra £17.52 in tax. So someone with a taxable income of £56,000 will pay £1,051.20, in eff ect paying back a portion of the Child Benefi t. The maximum tax charge is limited to the Child Benefi t received.

Please contact Julie Bloodworth on 01733 568321 or [email protected] for more info.

Mum’s, hands up who’s feeling undervalued?

You probably are. If you want to look after your family, it pays to put yourself fi rst for a change. Over half the mums in Britain don’t have life insurance. Yet the cost of paying someone to carry out the many tasks they perform every day could be more than £30,000 a year.

Even mums who go out to work often come home and do chores worth £28,664. How would your family cope fi nancially if you were to die or become ill?

What’s next? The cost of doing all this is £32,032 a year. So don’t underestimate your value - get protected for you and your family’s sake. Source: All fi gures from www.legalandgeneral.com March 2011.

Braybrook Primary School in Orton Goldhay is the second Peterborough school in a month to make the jump to being rated good in its Ofsted report.

Having received a rating of satisfactory in 2010, Braybrook has since undergone another inspection assessing a variety of areas such as pupil achievement, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management. After the two-day inspection in January, the school was rated good in every area.

David Simpson, Deputy Headteacher at Braybrook Primary School, said: “Everyone at the school is very proud to have achieved a ‘good’ Ofsted report. The report shows that standards are rising and that children are making good progress.”

‘Good’ going for Braybrook Primary School

Stanground Academy is raising standards for all pupilsFollowing a monitoring inspection that took place on 16 and 17 January 2013, Ofsted has

found that the Stanground Academy is “making reasonable progress in raising standards for all pupils” which is the best judgement available under this inspection regime.

The glowing report is testament to the dedication, hard work and unwavering support of staff, pupils and parents, which has been crucial in moving the Academy forward. There is a clear aspirational vision for the future and everyone is totally committed to playing their part in order to create an Academy that the community needs and deserves.

Ged Rae, Principal at the Stanground Academy, said: “We have made outstanding progress over the last two terms and staff and pupils are rightfully proud of their achievements. We have ambitious plans for the Academy and as this report shows, whilst we still have a long way to go, we are heading in the right direction and on course to significantly improve the number of pupils achieving five A* to C GCSE grades, including English and mathematics.”

Getting to thefoot of the problem

the specialists at the Fane Clinic have provided us with very interesting and useful information on feet problems.

WOrDs KATIE AMPS

Don’t worry – they’ll grow out of it is a common response to parents concerns about the development of their childrens’ feet or legs.

In some cases this can be true, however as children grow up their feet and legs undergo various stages of development. When kids start walking they often

appear uncoordinated and off-balance. Once they get the hang of being vertical, the muscles and ligaments in their legs and feet get stronger and work more effectively and they are off and running about before you know it! Sometimes, however, kids experience problems with their legs and feet, which make mastering the art of walking a little more difficult. When treating childrens’ foot problems, it is important for parents to remember that

the needs of childrens’ feet are different from those of adults. These are the most common causes of foot and leg pain seen in children:

Flat feetMost people have an arch in the bottom of their feet between their big toe and heel. This part of the foot does not touch the ground unless you are flat footed. Babies and children under the age of 2 usually

Page 28: Cherubs Issue 2

28 cherubs | www.cherubsnet.com

have flat feet, but by the time they are 5 years old, arches will have formed. While some people remain flat footed for their entire lives, it is usually with no adverse effects. If a child is experiencing foot pain, flat feet is a common cause. There is alsoa chance that flat feet in childhood, may lead to foot problems later in life due to a child’s developing body using other muscles, tendons, and bones to compensate for the lack of support in the structure of the foot. An examination of the foot very early and again just when the child begins to walk will help determine if any problems exist and whether treatmentis advisable.

In-toeingWhen one or both feet turn inward, a child is said to be pigeon-toed (medically, this condition is called ‘in-toeing’). This is commonly seen in toddlers who are learning to walk and whose balance and posture has not yet developed properly.

By 5 years of age this problem has usually fixed itself. A thorough examination is mandatory to determine the exact cause of the condition. Only then can it

be decided whether the condition will be outgrown or needs treatment.

Out-toeingOut-toeing is much less common than in-toeing. The most typical presentation is within the first or second year of life. Most children are born with external rotation contractures of the hips and this resolves shortly after walking begins. In those children in whom the resolution is slower, out-toeing is the result when they first start

walking. This will almost always resolve within a year from the onset of walking. In rare cases, in-toeing or out-toeing is a sign of children who are very active during the day.

The cause of this is thought to beassociated with a flat foot structure and tight heel cord.

“When treating childrens’ foot problems, it is important for

parents to remember that the needs of childrens’ feet are different from

those of adults.”

Heel painHeel pain is one of the more common foot complaints in children. When children get heel pain, the most common cause is a disturbance to the growth plate at the back of the heel bone (calcaneus) where the strong Achilles tendon attaches to it.This condition usually present between the ages of 8-15 years, usually a dull type pain that is made worse with activity. The pain originates from the growth centre in

the back of the heel. A major contributing cause is over-pronation: rolling in of the ankle joint and flattening of the arches, it places increased pressure on the growth plate area while it is attemptingto grow.

Knee PainIt is very common in children aged between 8 to early teens, especially if they are very sporty. When the feet

excessively pronate (roll in), this causes the entire lower limb to internally rotate, this puts excessive loads on the growth plate in the knee and causes pain.

Bow legsIf a child stands up straight with the feet and ankles touching, but the knees are

Page 29: Cherubs Issue 2

www.cherubsnet.com | cherubs 29

wide apart, they probably have bow legs. This is something that usually affects very young children and is a result of being curled up in the womb for 9 months! Once your child begins to walk, their limbsbegin to straighten out and by the time they hit 3 years old, the condition usually no longer exists.

Knock kneesThis problem comes about when the knees touch but the ankles remain wide apart. Affecting kids mainly between the ages of 3 and 5 years old, this issue usually resolves by the time the child is 7 years old.

What if the problem doesn’t go away?

If pain or discomfort persists then your child might need to see a podiatrist to help with correct foot development. A podiatrist may use a series of exercises to help treat a problem or in some cases the use of orthotics might be necessary.

Orthotics are used for children to do three things: control and balance how the foot functions, to help correct a foot problem, and to aid in preventing a foot problem from getting worse. The earlier a problem is diagnosed the better. It is unfortunate that parents are told their child will outgrow of the problem, only to find out later that the condition still exists and would have responded well to treatment at a much younger age.

If your not sure or have a concern or would just like to have peace of mind, have your child’s feet checked by a professional. Because your child’s feet are growing very quickly, it is very important to have correct fitting shoes, a good rule of thumb is to allow at least one adult finger’s width from the end of the longest toe (this is not always the big toe). Remember, proper fitting shoes are very important. “Branded doesn’t always mean the best”.

With The Fane Clinic’s specialist knowledge and advanced analysing equipment, the diagnosis of your child’s problems are quickly and clearly pinpointed. Keeping your child’s feet healthy and happy all the way to adulthood. Call The Fane Clinic - Specialists in Childrens’ Foot and Lower Limb Problems, on 01733 571555 or visit their website: www.fanefootorthotics.co.uk

We commonly concern ourselves mainly with the child’s eyesight, teeth and vaccinations, but how much time do we really take to understand our child’s developing feet?

Ask yourself the following questions:• Do I know what foot type my child has?• Is my child walking/developing correctly?• Are they walking and standing pain free?• What is the best type of footwear to suit

my child’s feet?

Children with particular foot ailments are the foot, knee and back pain sufferers of the future. Paying close attention to

your child’s feet can help prevent pain in adult life. As a child masters walking, the medial arch begins to appear. All toddlers have flat feet because of a low angle of calcaneal inclination, by 5 to 6 years this angle has increased, and in most cases a medial longitudinal arch becomes apparent. By around 6 years of age, your child should have normal arches in both feet. Children who appear flat-footed have a normal arch, but flatten when they stand. This movement is called “pronation” and may cause painful symptoms. In this case, specialist orthotics for children may be useful to improve the foot posture.

It is going to be a great Summer in the City this year. There are two big family friendly events that me and the kids are especially looking forward to. First up, on Sunday June 2nd, pop star Olly Murs will play a huge outdoor concert at the

Embankment. I’ve met Olly a number of times and he is without a doubt one of the nicest and funniest guys we’ve ever had on the Heart Breakfast show. My daughter loves not only all of his songs, but also his cool and quirky dance moves! And it’s not just the kids that will want to see Olly live, most mums, I’m sure appreciate his music, not to mention his looks and cheeky chappie Essex-boy appeal! The big wide open space of the Embankment is in my opinion a brilliant venue.

Anyone who came to the JLS concert a few years back will recall how good the atmosphere was as near on 20,000 people fl ocked to enjoy local boy Aston and his buddies belt out all the JLS hits. Whole families grouped together with blankets and picnics and luckily the weather was kind. The huge stage and powerful sound system helped create a superb night - and I feel sure the Olly night could be equally as good. Myself and my Heart Breakfast colleague Ros as stage hosts will have the honour of introducing him, and we will also be making a backstage video too!

local Heart FM breakfast presenter Kev lawrence tells us

Another massive Peterborough event to look forward to in 2013 is the Perkins Great Eastern Run. The half marathon and 5km fun run route has remained unchanged from the 2012 course, and the race will once again start and fi nish at the Embankment. The organisers are hoping to build on the success of last year when a record number of runners (around 5,500) took part. Get the date in the diary to either enter, or just take the family to go

along and support the runners and soak up the atmosphere - Sunday October 13th.

Young runners are being encouraged to sign up in this years fun run via the Junior Challenge. The school, club, or organisation that raises the most money for local charity Anna’s Hope will win a team kit from ChromaSport & Trophies worth £500. A television, courtesy of Sainsbury’s, will also be won by the junior school or club that enters themost children.

I’ll be hosting the event which gives me a great excuse to not have to run in it, but I am trying to persuade my kids to try the fun run! For more info on the event, to enter a team and to keep up-to-date with various training sessions and tips, visitwww.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk

It’s really important that we support events in Peterborough. Increased attendances will defi nitely catch the eye of the people who bring these types of events to the city, which in turn will make where we all live a much more vibrant place.

Ki d d ie’s c o rnerActivities & recipes for your cherub and you

as a child, I remember sitting with my grandmother with my cheeks puffed out and bright red, trying

to hollow out a hen’s egg through a tiny hole in the bottom to decorate it for Easter. As the years have gone on I haven’t dared attempt it again but now there is a fabulous alternative provided by Andronicas Ceramics Studio in the form of ceramic eggs. They are moulded and ready for painting and decorating either at the studio or at home.

You will need:• Ceramic egg(s) found at Andronicas

Ceramics Studio• Poster paints, paintbrushes and water• Any extra embellishments• Sponge or cloth• Pencil, scissors• An eggcup• Thread or ribbon• Clear varnish

1. Pick up an egg, egg cup, bunny (anything you like really!) from AndronicasCeramics Studio. Once at home, give it a quick wash with a damp sponge or clothto clear it of surface dust and draw on your design in pencil. Don’t worry if itsmudges as you handle it.

2. Using poster paints, paint on your design. If you don’t have poster paints, anypaint will suit it except watercolours. An egg cup is an ideal tool to stop thatpesky egg from rolling around and leaving prints all over the table. Paint one halfof the egg and leave to dry. Once the top half is dry flip the egg over in the eggcup and paint the bottom half. Leave that to dry as well, preferably overnight.

3. Once the paint is dry you can embellish with any extras you want. Glitter gluepens are a fabulous way of adding some sparkle to your eggs as well as sequinsand feathers.

4. Cut out a length of thread/ribbon about 20cm long and thread through the loop atthe top of the egg and tie the ends together to make a loop to hang it from.

5. You have the option of covering your egg with a clear spray varnish but it’s notessential. I would recommend it to give your egg that added shine. If you do use avarnish please follow the instructions on the bottle to use it safely.

6. Ta da! Your Easter egg is now finished!

The studio has a whole range of ceramics available for Easter (and all year round) to build an Easter display. Come down to the studio and have a go using ceramic paints fired in a kiln?

Kiddie’s corner

Make an Easter chickeaster is nearly upon us and here at Crafty Monkey, we are putting together our kids easter workshops and thought we would share one that you can do at home with your children!

now, I’m sure you know eggs are a very special symbol of Easter so, to keep all your child’s eggs safe,

we thought what better than to get them to make their own Easter chick where they can store all their yummy yummy chocolate eggs?

Below are a set of instructions on how to make a cute Easter chick! We hope you and your child enjoys this project and wish you a Happy Easter!

You will need:• 1 flowerpot• Yellow, orange & black acrylic paint• Multi-coloured feathers• PVA glue• Orange & yellow paper or sponge foam• Colourful shredded paper• Paintbrushes• Paint pallet or pots• Scissors• Yummy chocolate eggs

1. First, paint your flowerpot a nice bright yellow! Apply two coats and let the paint dry.

2. Cut a small triangle out of the orange paper/foam. Using PVA glue, stick this onto your flowerpot. This is your chick’s beak! If you don’t have orange paper or foam then you can paint an orange triangle for a beak onto the flowerpot instead.

3. Just above the beak, use a thin paintbrush and black acrylic paint to paint on the eyes. Alternatively you could glue on googly eyes.

4. Now, on the yellow paper/foam, draw two wings. Cut these out and using PVA glue, stick on lots of feathers; they can be any colour you want. I chose yellow and orange!

5. Once the wings have dried, carefully stick them onto the back of your chick flowerpot. Nearly done!

6. If you want to add more feathers to the chick, this is the time to do it! Make sure that the glue is dry before carrying on. We have placed feathers in the top of the pot.

7. Take the shredded paper, and pop it inside the chick, to make a comfy bed for all your delicious Easter treats!

8. Put the yummy chocolate eggs inside your chick and they will be kept safe.

We hope that you have enjoyed this project. To see other projects, then you can visit our blog and sign up for our newsletter which include the latest offers, news and workshops at:www.craftymonkeypotterypainting.comContact:Tel: 01480 219222Email: [email protected]

Tips to teach a greener lifeMake shopping funTalk about the food you eat as you shop to help encourage an interest in healthy and planet-friendly eating habits for life. And show your child how you can reduce food waste by using up leftovers in other meals.

Get into the recycling habitSet up a clear, colour-coded system for your recycling containers and let them help sort it. Very quickly they’ll be reminding you what and when to recycle!

Start your own compost heap or wormeryMost children are fascinated by creepy crawlies, so consider investing in a wormery. Explain simply how vegetable waste breaks down and eventually helps grow more food. When the compost is ready, you can use some of it to grow seeds in a pot for your child to tend.

Start the water-saving habitMake it a rule that they always put the plug in before running water for hand-washing, and turn off the tap when teeth-cleaning.

Lights out!Always turn off lights when you leave a room, and ensure electrical appliances aren’t left on standby.

Buy your child a mini shopping bagAnd let them carry something that’s not too delicate in it when you shop. That way the ‘no plastic bag’ ethic will become a lifelong habit once they’re an independent shopper.

Get the litter bug!Make a point of showing how you always bin your litter, or take it home if no bins are around, and your child will quickly learn that leaving litter around is a no-no.

How to get greener locally…Get ready for the Peterborough Green Festival on Saturday 25th May – Sunday 2nd June 2013This year’s festival (now 22!) will be based on the principle of “One Planet Living”, whilst celebrating PECT’s 20th Birthday! ARCH

- APRIL 2013

If you are looking to get away from it all this Easter… then here are some great ideas. Jump in the car and get into the Easter spirit!

Wicksteed Park’s unique place at the heart of children’s play

Fabulous Wicksteed Park in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside is rightfully proud of its heritage as the home of children’s play.

For approaching 100 years, children have been thrilled by a visit to Wicksteed and its many wonders – created by founder Charles Wicksteed to inspire and encourage play as part of families’ well-being.

The Park also still boasts its 1950s merry-go-round and a Double Pirate Ship which is one of only two in the world and now offers top grade camping and caravanning as well as luxury lodges, so visitors can stay in the park itself.

It still operates as a free playground – the largest in Europe - within a free-to-access public park, owned and managed by the Wicksteed Trust, within which members of the Wicksteed family play a large part. Today it is fair to say Wicksteed Park remains the home of children’s play. Charles would have had it no other way.
