Make sure your kids are Bright Kids!

building strong partnerships with parents as well as engaging them in the life of the nursery is one of the key aims of Bright Kids Day Nursery in Lynchwood. They use their unique

Parental Nursery Cam to allow parents to see their child, reassuring them that they have settled well in the nursery and are enjoying their time with the staff and other children.

The nursery held lots of events in 2012 and will continue to do so into 2013. Last year’s favourites were a ‘Mini Olympics’ and a cultural evening. “It was a very exciting year for us and we are planning more events this year, starting with our monthly Coff ee Morning,” said Claire Smalley, Manager.

Childcare costs are always an issue for parents and with that in mind, Bright Kids had a bright idea. They are currently running an off er which will reduce their fees to £150.00 per week for 50 hours.

Let’s get cooking!Kids Country supports schools cooking campaign

the East of England Agricultural Society’s new education programme Kids Country, will be giving schools a helping hand in the kitchen in the light of the government’s announcement that compulsory cooking lessons are to

be made a part of the National Curriculum.From September next year, cooking lessons will be made compulsory for

children aged 7 to fourteen who will now learn how to make healthy food and understand the basics of nutrition.

On 5th July, a Food and Farming day at Peterborough Showground will incorporate food stories and activities including: growing mushrooms, pressing rapeseed into oil and making sausages.

All supported by many businesses and organisations introduced in the local food and farming sector.

Baby boomMaternity services at Peterborough and stamford Hospitals nHs Foundation trust have successfully passed a rigorous ‘standards of care’ assessment to retain the Cnst level 2 status.

the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST) assesses NHS Trusts against a strict set of standards to be assured that

their professional teams are promoting and using eff ective risk management and high standards of clinical care to minimise the risk of harm to patients.

For maternity care there are a separate set of 50 standards in place. Trusts can score from Level 0 to Level 3 – with Level 3 being the highest. Following its Level 2 success, work is already under way for the maternity service to achieve Level 3 status in the next two years.

The busy maternity unit, based at Peterborough City Hospital, is fast heading towards a milestone of delivering 5,000 babies a year by the end of March 2013.

It’s 3am, everyone in the house is awake, and you’ve tried everything you can, and your child still has a temperature.

A smiling, content and responsive child is probably not very unwell, despite having a fever. A pale, less responsive child is likely to be more unwell. If your child is needing to breath faster, passing less urine, has a hot swollen joint or has a non-blanching purple rash, they are likely to need immediate medical attention.

So what can we do if our child has a fever? NHS direct is a useful source of information, and can be found on www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk or 0845 4647. Your GP is probably the next place to go to thereafter.

Once your GP has made a diagnosis, what can you do to help your little one feel better? Paracetamol and ibuprofen can be given to children, where appropriate but may not change the temperature. Treat the child, not the fever. A child with a temperature of 39 degrees centigrade, who is busy running around putting jam on your cat, is likely to be less unwell than a child with a temperature of 38 who is pale and unresponsive. If in doubt, seek trained clinical advice.

For the year ending 5 april 2013, many individuals will be forced to fi ll in self-assessment forms for the fi rst time to take account of government changes.

The shake-up of the Child Benefi t arrangements will see an increase in the amount of income tax paid by families with an adult earning more than £50,000 where child benefi t has been received after 7 January 2013. Where the income of one adult exceeds £60,000, the payment will be clawed back. Many of those earning over the threshold will need to fi ll in self-assessment tax returns.

Some experts have warned it may be dangerous to opt out of receiving the Child Benefi t in case your income drops below £60,000 or, in the case of stay at home parents, to ensure they continue receiving a credit towards their national insurance record, which aff ects their state pension, and which is linked to the receipt of child benefi t.

As an example: a couple with two children receives Child Benefi t of £1,752 a year. For every £100 one of the couple earns above £50,000, they will pay an extra £17.52 in tax. So someone with a taxable income of £56,000 will pay £1,051.20, in eff ect paying back a portion of the Child Benefi t. The maximum tax charge is limited to the Child Benefi t received.

Aidan (16), a pupil at The Voyager Academy in Walton, beat three other candidates in the YouthMP election, receiving 44.5 per cent of the 2,236 votes cast. Jennifer Thorpe (17) of Arthur Mellows Village College in Glinton finished second with 28.5 per cent of the votes and will serve as Deputy Youth MP for Peterborough.

The other two candidates were Chelsi Beale (17) who represented Stanground Academy and Ellie Jaggard (17) of Arthur Mellows Village College.

Aidan will now represent the city’s young people at the UK Youth Parliament, sit on Peterborough’s Youth Council and meet with key leaders in the city. He said: “I’m so pleased to have been elected Youth MP of Peterborough. I want to thank everyone who voted for me. I am looking forward to my next year as Youth MP.”

Braybrook Primary School in Orton Goldhay is the second Peterborough school in a month to make the jump to being rated good in its Ofsted report.

Having received a rating of satisfactory in 2010, Braybrook has since undergone another inspection assessing a variety of areas such as pupil achievement, quality of teaching,behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management. After the two-day inspection in January, the school was rated good in every area.

David Simpson, Deputy Headteacher at Braybrook Primary School, said: “Everyone at the school is very proud to have achieved a ‘good’ Ofsted report. The report shows that standards are rising and that children are making good progress.”

New playground for Hampton Hargate Primary

Hampton Hargate Primary are pleased to announce the completion of the

ballzone, tyre play and trim trail. Also, new playground markings have made a huge difference for the children and the new reception outdoor area has also proved to be a big success.

Getting to thefoot of the problem

Don’t worry – they’ll grow out of it is a common response to parents concerns about the development of their childrens’ feet or legs.

In some cases this can be true, however as children grow up their feet and legs undergo various stages of development.When kids start walking they often

appear uncoordinated and off-balance. Once they get the hang of being vertical, the muscles and ligaments in their legs and feet get stronger and work more effectively and they are off and running about before you know it! Sometimes, however, kids experience problems with their legs and feet, which make mastering the art of walking a little more difficult. When treating childrens’ foot problems, it is important for parents to remember that

the needs of childrens’ feet are different from those of adults. These are the most common causes of foot and leg pain seen in children:

Flat feetMost people have an arch in the bottom of their feet between their big toe and heel. This part of the foot does not touch the ground unless you are flat footed. Babies and children under the age of 2 usually


have flat feet, but by the time they are 5 years old, arches will have formed. While some people remain flat footed for their entire lives, it is usually with no adverse effects. If a child is experiencing foot pain, flat feet is a common cause. There is alsoa chance that flat feet in childhood, may lead to foot problems later in life due to a child’s developing body using other muscles, tendons, and bones to compensate for the lack of support in the structure of the foot. An examination of the foot very early and again just when the child begins to walk will help determine if any problems exist and whether treatmentis advisable.

In-toeingWhen one or both feet turn inward, a child is said to be pigeon-toed (medically, this condition is called ‘in-toeing’). This is commonly seen in toddlers who are learning to walk and whose balance and posture has not yet developed properly.

By 5 years of age this problem has usually fixed itself. A thorough examination is mandatory to determine the exact cause of the condition. Only then can it

be decided whether the condition will be outgrown or needs treatment.

Out-toeingOut-toeing is much less common than in-toeing. The most typical presentation is within the first or second year of life. Most children are born with external rotation contractures of the hips and this resolves shortly after walking begins. In those children in whom the resolution is slower, out-toeing is the result when they first start

walking. This will almost always resolve within a year from the onset of walking. In rare cases, in-toeing or out-toeing is a sign of children who are very active during the day.

The cause of this is thought to beassociated with a flat foot structure and tight heel cord.

“When treating childrens’ foot problems, it is important for

parents to remember that the needs of childrens’ feet are different from

those of adults.”

Heel painHeel pain is one of the more common foot complaints in children. When children get heel pain, the most common cause is a disturbance to the growth plate at the back of the heel bone (calcaneus) where the strong Achilles tendon attaches to it.This condition usually present between the ages of 8-15 years, usually a dull type pain that is made worse with activity. The pain originates from the growth centre in

the back of the heel. A major contributing cause is over-pronation: rolling in of the ankle joint and flattening of the arches, it places increased pressure on the growth plate area while it is attemptingto grow.

Knee PainIt is very common in children aged between 8 to early teens, especially if they are very sporty. When the feet

excessively pronate (roll in), this causes the entire lower limb to internally rotate, this puts excessive loads on the growth plate in the knee and causes pain.

Bow legsIf a child stands up straight with the feet and ankles touching, but the knees are


wide apart, they probably have bow legs. This is something that usually affects very young children and is a result of being curled up in the womb for 9 months! Once your child begins to walk, their limbsbegin to straighten out and by the time they hit 3 years old, the condition usually no longer exists.

Knock kneesThis problem comes about when the knees touch but the ankles remain wide apart. Affecting kids mainly between the ages of 3 and 5 years old, this issue usually resolves by the time the child is 7 years old.

What if the problem doesn’t go away?

If pain or discomfort persists then your child might need to see a podiatrist to help with correct foot development. A podiatrist may use a series of exercises to help treat a problem or in some cases the use of orthotics might be necessary.

Orthotics are used for children to do three things: control and balance how the foot functions, to help correct a foot problem, and to aid in preventing a foot problem from getting worse. The earlier a problem is diagnosed the better. It is unfortunate that parents are told their child will outgrow of the problem, only to find out later that the condition still exists and would have responded well to treatment at a much younger age.

If your not sure or have a concern or would just like to have peace of mind, have your child’s feet checked by a professional. Because your child’s feet are growing very quickly, it is very important to have correct fitting shoes, a good rule of thumb is to allow at least one adult finger’s width from the end of the longest toe (this is not always the big toe). Remember, proper fitting shoes are very important. “Branded doesn’t always mean the best”.

Children with particular foot ailments are the foot, knee and back pain sufferers of the future. Paying close attention to

your child’s feet can help prevent pain in adult life. As a child masters walking, the medial arch begins to appear. All toddlers have flat feet because of a low angle of calcaneal inclination, by 5 to 6 years this angle has increased, and in most cases a medial longitudinal arch becomes apparent. By around 6 years of age, your child should have normal arches in both feet. Children who appear flat-footed have a normal arch, but flatten when they stand. This movement is called “pronation” and may cause painful symptoms. In this case, specialist orthotics for children may be useful to improve the foot posture.

Anyone who came to the JLS concert a few years back will recall how good the atmosphere was as near on 20,000 people fl ocked to enjoy local boy Aston and his buddies belt out all the JLS hits. Whole families grouped together with blankets and picnics and luckily the weather was kind. The huge stage and powerful sound system helped create a superb night - and I feel sure the Olly night could be equally as good. Myself and my Heart Breakfast colleague Ros as stage hosts will have the honour of introducing him, and we will also be making a backstage video too!

Another massive Peterborough event to look forward to in 2013 is the Perkins Great Eastern Run. The half marathon and 5km fun run route has remained unchanged from the 2012 course, and the race will once again start and fi nish at the Embankment. The organisers are hoping to build on the success of last year when a record number of runners (around 5,500) took part. Get the date in the diary to either enter, or just take the family to go

along and support the runners and soak up the atmosphere - Sunday October 13th.

Young runners are being encouraged to sign up in this years fun run via the Junior Challenge. The school, club, or organisation that raises the most money for local charity Anna’s Hope will win a team kit from ChromaSport & Trophies worth £500. as a child, I remember sitting with my grandmother with my cheeks puffed out and bright red, trying

to hollow out a hen’s egg through a tiny hole in the bottom to decorate it for Easter. As the years have gone on I haven’t dared attempt it again but now there is a fabulous alternative provided by Andronicas Ceramics Studio in the form of ceramic eggs. They are moulded and ready for painting and decorating either at the studio or at home.

You will need:• Ceramic egg(s) found at Andronicas

Ceramics Studio• Poster paints, paintbrushes and water• Any extra embellishments• Sponge or cloth• Pencil, scissors• An eggcup• Thread or ribbon• Clear varnish

1. Pick up an egg, egg cup, bunny (anything you like really!) from AndronicasCeramics Studio. Once at home, give it a quick wash with a damp sponge or clothto clear it of surface dust and draw on your design in pencil. Don’t worry if itsmudges as you handle it.

2. Using poster paints, paint on your design. If you don’t have poster paints, anypaint will suit it except watercolours. An egg cup is an ideal tool to stop thatpesky egg from rolling around and leaving prints all over the table. Paint one halfof the egg and leave to dry. Once the top half is dry flip the egg over in the eggcup and paint the bottom half. Leave that to dry as well, preferably overnight.

3. Once the paint is dry you can embellish with any extras you want. Glitter gluepens are a fabulous way of adding some sparkle to your eggs as well as sequinsand feathers.

4. Cut out a length of thread/ribbon about 20cm long and thread through the loop atthe top of the egg and tie the ends together to make a loop to hang it from.

5. You have the option of covering your egg with a clear spray varnish but it’s notessential. I would recommend it to give your egg that added shine. If you do use avarnish please follow the instructions on the bottle to use it safely.

6. Ta da! Your Easter egg is now finished!

Recipesbanana & giant chocolate button cupcakes MAKES 20-24 CUPCAKES

Ingredients:125g unsalted butter125g caster sugar3 eggs50ml milk250g self-raising flour1 tsp baking powder1 tsp ground cinnamon3 ripe bananas

For the topping:150g unsalted butter350g icing sugar50g cocoa2-4 tbsp warm waterGiant chocolate buttons

Method:Line your muffin tins with the cupcake cases. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Use a wooden spoon to cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Gently fold in the eggs one by one. Sift in the flour, baking powder and cinnamon. Fold in the bananas until combined. Share the mixture between the cupcake cases. Bake for approx 25 mins until just cooked through and turning golden. Leave in the tin to cool for a few mins, then transfer the cases to a wire rack to cool completely. To make the topping, beat the butter until pale and creamy. Sift in the icing sugar and cocoa. Add 2 tbsp water and stir together. Spoon into an icing bag and pipe onto the cakes, or use a pallet knife to smooth it on freestyle. Decorate with giant chocolate buttons.

Ingredients:500g shelled broad beans350g penne100g pancetta or streaky bacon1tbsp butter or olive oil1 garlic clove200ml double creamSmall bunch of mint2 tbsp grated Parmesan

Method:Cook the broad beans in boiling salted water for a few minutes, until tender. Drain and set aside. Cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water until al dente. Meanwhile, fry the bacon in the butter or oil until just beginning to brown, then add the garlicand stir for a minute without letting it colour. Stir in the cream, mint and broad beans and simmer for a few minutes. When the pasta is done, drain well, toss with the sauce and serve immediately. Then add the Parmesan and season to taste.

Ingredients:3 Organic PearsA sprinkle of organic cinnamon A drop of organic vanilla extract

Method:Step 1 - Mix the pears with the vanilla and cinnamon.

Step 2 - Place the pear mixture in a shallow baking dish with about 1 inch of water.

Step 3 - Bake at 180c for 25 minutes or until they are tender.

Step 4 - Let the pears cool down and blend or mash depending on the consistency your baby is used to. You may want to add a little water for a thinner mixture.

Make an Easter chickeaster is nearly upon us and here at Crafty Monkey, we are putting together our kids easter workshops and thought we would share one that you can do at home with your children!

now, I’m sure you know eggs are a very special symbol of Easter so, to keep all your child’s eggs safe,

we thought what better than to get them to make their own Easter chick where they can store all their yummy yummy chocolate eggs?

Below are a set of instructions on how to make a cute Easter chick! We hope you and your child enjoys this project and wish you a Happy Easter!

You will need:• 1 flowerpot• Yellow, orange & black acrylic paint• Multi-coloured feathers• PVA glue• Orange & yellow paper or sponge foam• Colourful shredded paper• Paintbrushes• Paint pallet or pots• Scissors• Yummy chocolate eggs

1. First, paint your flowerpot a nice bright yellow! Apply two coats and let the paint dry.

2. Cut a small triangle out of the orange paper/foam. Using PVA glue, stick this onto your flowerpot. This is your chick’s beak! If you don’t have orange paper or foam then you can paint an orange triangle for a beak onto the flowerpot instead.

3. Just above the beak, use a thin paintbrush and black acrylic paint to paint on the eyes. Alternatively you could glue on googly eyes.

4. Now, on the yellow paper/foam, draw two wings. Cut these out and using PVA glue, stick on lots of feathers; they can be any colour you want. I chose yellow and orange!

5. Once the wings have dried, carefully stick them onto the back of your chick flowerpot. Nearly done!

6. If you want to add more feathers to the chick, this is the time to do it! Make sure that the glue is dry before carrying on. We have placed feathers in the top of the pot.

7. Take the shredded paper, and pop it inside the chick, to make a comfy bed for all your delicious Easter treats!

8. Put the yummy chocolate eggs inside your chick and they will be kept safe.
