The Queensland Government’s South East

Queensland Regional Plan 2009-2031, which

is the pre-eminent planning instrument for

the greater Brisbane area, has designated

Chermside as a ‘Principal Activity Centre’.

This means it is a key focal point of regional

employment and an important transport and

administrative hub, and is just one of four

across the Brisbane metropolitan region.

According to the Queensland Government,

the Chermside area is predicted to support

55,000 jobs and 32,000 residents by 2031.

Westfield Chermside is the largest shopping

centre in Queensland with 409 retailers

including Apple, David Jones, Myer, eight other

majors and ten mini-majors. Entertainment

facilities include a 16-screen Event cinema,

gymnasium and a 26-lane bowling alley.

With 6,200 car parks and over 144,000m²

of floor space, Westfield Chermside attracts

16.4 million customer visits per annum with

an annual turnover of around $900 million.

Westfield has recently received Council approval

for an expansion to the shopping centre that

would increase the gross floor area by 35,350m²,

yielding between 50 and 70 new tenancies,

and a minimum of 532 new parking spaces.

The Kedron-Wavell Services Club Inc. is

a modern, three-level, multi-million dollar

complex located in the centre of the Chermside

community hub; a recreation and leisure

precinct adjacent to Queensland’s largest

shopping centre. It currently has in excess

of 30,000 members and employs 234 staff.

The Club boasts three distinctly different

restaurants, offering indoor and outdoor

dining, the choice of four social bars and

five private service bars. The Club is open

seven days a week and can host events for up

to 500 guests, with eight air-conditioned event

rooms and a unique secluded deck ideal for

private functions.

Adjacent to the Kedron-Wavell Services Club is

the Chermside swimming pool complex which

has a 25-metre heated outdoor lap pool as well

as outdoor fitness area, waterpark with six

water slides, and a lagoon pool play area.

The nearby Chermside library is open seven

days per week and features a coffee shop,

meeting room, and learning lounge.

An extensive range of community events

are held at the library each month.

The Chermside area has an extensive network

of parklands and sporting fields, totalling over

100 hectares, including Marchant Park,

7th Brigade Park, Bradbury Park, Huxtable Park,

Raven Street Reserve, and the Chermside Hills

Reserve. A series of interconnected walking

and bicycle paths follow the Downfall Creek

tributary system, connecting with community

hubs and lifestyle amenities. Playgrounds,

BBQ areas, picnic spots and dog off-leash

areas are in abundance.

The residential vacancy rate in Chermside is

currently just 2.9%. Note that a vacancy rate

under 3.0% suggests there is an undersupply

of suitable rental product.

The Prince Charles Hospital in Chermside

provides services to residents living in the

northern suburbs of Brisbane and specialist

services to the broader Queensland and northern

New South Wales population. The 630-bed

hospital employs 3,500 staff and each month

treats around 30,000 patients and receives

30,000 visitors.

In 2012, the Prince Charles Hospital opened

a $45.6 million facility providing specialist

children’s health services, delivering emergency,

inpatient and outpatient services. The new

services, based around family-centred care,

include a dedicated children’s emergency

department with a separate entrance and

waiting room, 12 paediatric treatment spaces, 20

inpatient beds for same-day and overnight stays,

and outpatient clinics.

Co-located with the Prince Charles Hospital

is the Holy Spirit Northside Hospital, a fully

accredited Catholic tertiary hospital providing

comprehensive inpatient and day services

across a broad range of medical and surgical

specialities. Holy Spirit Northside is a teaching

hospital for the University of Queensland’s

School of Medicine. Holy Spirit Northside has:

• 195 inpatient beds;

• 8 operating theatres;

• A 15-bed Intensive Care Unit;

• A 30-bed cardiac ward;

• A 10-bed acute care cardiac unit;

• Two cardiac laboratories;

• A day procedural and endoscopy unit;

• A day oncology service; and

• A 24-hour private emergency centre.

The $4.9 million Medical Training Facility

at Holy Spirit Northside that opened in

2012 provides multidisciplinary training for

undergraduate doctors, nurses and physician

assistants. Completed works included the

addition of a new hospital wing accommodating

an extra 60 patient beds and the expansion of an

existing medical centre.

The Prince Charles and the Holy Spirit

Northside hospitals are well known throughout

Australia as pre-eminent acute cardiac centres

and one of the world’s best cardiac campuses.

These facilities also generate considerable local

demand for both permanent and short-stay

accommodation.

Furthermore, just ten minutes’ drive from 61-65

Hilltop Avenue is the North West Private Hospital

at Everton Park, a 101-bed fully-accredited

surgical, obstetric and medical hospital that has

recently undergone a $27 million upgrade. It is a

preferred Tier-1 Department of Veterans Affairs

accredited hospital.
