OOn the trail of the Ancient Romans – Winemaking in BadenViticulture in present-day Germany can be traced back to Ancient Roman times, when the first vines were brought to the Baden region. By cultivating their own vines in the favourable climatic conditions of this area, these passionate wine lovers were also able to avoid costly transportation of the “divine drink” across the Mediterranean. Through the Medieval ages, monks took on the responsibility for the majority of the vines in the area. In the 13th century, the Cistercian sisters founded the Lichtental convent and planted the first Spät-burgunder (Pinot Noir) vines. They crafted a superb wine using their art of winemaking from their homeland in Burgundy. Today Baden is Germany‘s third largest wine region. Thanks to its warm climate, it is the only German wine region situated in European Union wine growing zone B. Taking on the majority of production, winemaking cooperatives cover around 85% of the region’s total.

WWinery Baden-Baden The winery Baden-Baden was founded in 1922 and is one of the most important winemaking cooperatives of the Baden region and is highly recognized by local and international experts.

The collection of wines and sparkling wines produced by the winery Baden-Baden is crafted to suit various individual tastes. The two-star- Collection Baden-Baden** includes wines aged in the traditional wooden barrel for at least nine months. The exclusive three-star-collection Collection Baden-Baden exklusiv*** wine selection consists of Spätlese, Auslese, Riesling and Spätburgunder made from hand-selected grapes from premium vineyards. Overall, the Baden-Baden winery enjoys a high reputation among critics and epicureans. Its wines are successfully marketed not only in Germany, but also in Japan, Russia, Hong Kong and China.

HHealth Benefits of WineEven the Ancient World understood the health and medicinal benefits that wine could offer. Today the scien-tists can now substantiate most of these positive effects on human health. The German Wine Institute (DWI) briefly summarizes their findings.

Studies show that a moderate consumption of wine along with an active lifestyle and healthy eating habits con-tribute to the maintenance of overall good health. The consumption of one glass of wine per day leads to a sig-nificant reduction of vascular damaging LDL-cholesterol levels. At the same time it increases the level of HDL-cholesterol, which has a protective effect on the vascular system. The HDL-cholesterol prevents atherosclerosis by extracting cholesterol from the artery walls and thus reduces the risk of coronary heart disease. Furthermore, a moderate consumption of wine during meals stimulates and supports the digestive system. Fruit acids and alcohol contained in the wine support the production of saliva and gastric secretion. Aside from medical advantages, wine is also used by the anti-aging industry because of organic chemicals called polyphenols. This powerful antioxidant scavenges damaging free radicals from the body to prevent cells from premature aging.

OOur Gourmet AdvicesRiesling, the king of German white grapes, with its harmoniously integrated acidity and diverse flavour will best suit white meats and fish. Spätlese wines with their typical sweet touch are ideal accompaniment to cream cheese, while the noble sweet grape varieties, such as ice wine, are the perfect aperitif or dessert wines.
