WELCOME & iNTRODuCTiONWelcome to the second edition of our Newsletter, providing CHEP stakeholders with the latest news and features regarding our environmental and sustainability initiatives across our UK & Ireland operation.

Feedback on our first edition, published back in May, has been fantastic and I hope this second edition is as well received. We’ve been inundated with competition entries, and suggestions for new names for the Newsletter – read on to find out who the lucky winners are.

As I stated in the previous edition, environmental sustainability is fundamental to the way CHEP does business, and we are absolutely committed to providing supply-chain solutions that meet customer needs while minimising their impact on the environment. To this end, I feel it’s crucial that we keep all of our stakeholders fully abreast of our latest programmes and initiatives in this area, and I see this Newsletter as being a fundamental part of this communications process.

If you would like to find out more about any of the initiatives featured, or have an idea for future improvements in this key area, then we would love to hear from you. Please contact myself or any other member of our Project Team – contact details are on the back page.

And don’t forget your chance to win £50 of M&S vouchers in our Reader’s competition – good luck!

Mike Pooley Managing Director

CHEP UK & Ireland

On July 1st 2011, Mark Cashen, HR Business Partner of CHEP UK&I cycled to work in support of CHEP’s nominated charity, Group B Strep Support.

For many, this may not seem much of a challenge. However, Mark’s daily commute to work is 45 miles – one way. On a good day, this usually takes around an hour and a half. On a bad day, it can take well over 2 hours!

On 1st July, Mark (pictured on the left) and his cycling partner Terry Murphy took 3 hours 52 minutes and 58 seconds to complete the arduous journey, along the Trans Pennine Trail, from Southport to the CHEP office in Sale, south Manchester.

CHEP has been supporting Group B Strep Support for sometime now helping them to raise their profile as they work hard to educate and identify GBS infections, the most common form of life threatening disease in newborn babies. This is an entirely preventable disease through education, information and an easily administered test.

CHARiTY CYCLE TO WORK - iN AiD OF GROuP B sTREP suPPORT

Mark’s efforts have contributed £682.54 so far to the Charity - well done Mark!! Anyone wishing to make a retrospective donation in recognition of Mark’s efforts can still do so at www.justgiving.com/cycle-2-work.

This year’s total company contribution to Group B Strep stands at just over £8,000.

CHEP’s ENViRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT sYsTEMCHEP UK&I is committed to establishing and maintaining an Environmental Management System, which covers the whole of the UK business, whilst maintaining the broader context of the EMEA Environmental Policy endorsed by the Group President, EMEA and targets set by Brambles Plc.

The EMS is the responsibility of the UK&I Carbon and Energy Steering Committee, and further updates regarding progress on the implementation of this EMS will be provided in future editions of Sustainability Matters.

An Environmental Management System (EMS) allows a company to assess its environmental strengths and weaknesses. An EMS aims to identify and manage significant impacts, which can lead to reduced environmental impact and cost saving, whilst providing an accountable, quality reporting system which helps to provide for Legislative commitments, such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme.

For further information regarding the role of Energy Administrators, please contact Resh Mal-Rushforth ([email protected]). Details of the nominated Energy Administrator for your site can be found on your local Environment & Sustainability project notice board.

ADVANCED ENViRONMENTAL TRAiNiNG COuRsEsThe second set of annual training sessions have recently been delivered to train Energy Administrators in monitoring and targeting techniques, reduction action plans and to give a wider background of CHEP’s commitment and strategy towards the environment.

These full day sessions in Sale and West Bromwich were targeted at the current team of Energy Administrators plus other key project stakeholders from across the business. Key areas covered during the training session included:

Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficient Scheme

CHEP’s EMS

Reporting, monitoring and targeting

Reduction Action Plans

Follow up sessions are planned to specifically focus upon half-hour electricity and gas meter readings to gauge energy usage.

THE MAiN COMPONENTs OF A GOOD EMs:

CHEP ENERGY ADMiNisTRATORsCHEP UK&I is currently working towards the implementation of a comprehensive Environmental Management System, and a team of dedicated Energy Administrators has been put in place as part of this approach.

The role of Energy Administrator is to capture energy consumption data at a site level to help ensure that energy consumption responsibility is present at a local level. The team, led by the Carbon and Energy Steering Committee, is currently communicating EMS requirements throughout their sites and delivering a very clear message about a greener environment throughout the network. Continued commitment and support of Energy Administrators is key to the success of CO2 reduction across our sites. In short, Energy Administrators play a vital role in developing and maintaining CHEP’s UK&I Environmental Management System (EMS).

CHEP suPPORTs THE NATiONAL FOREsT TO CREATE NEW LANDsCAPECHEP has signed an innovative sponsorship deal with the National Forest Company, which is leading a regeneration project to create a wooded landscape embracing 200 square miles of central England. The agreement will result in the planting of more than 12,000 new trees in a six-hectare area at Normanton, Leicestershire, over the next three years.

The National Forest has been underway for less than 20 years, and is taking root across parts of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire. From being one of the country’s least-wooded regions, the ambitious goal of The National Forest is to increase woodland cover to about one-third of all the land within its boundary – an area roughly five times the size of the city of Manchester. No multi-purpose forest on this scale has been created in the UK for 1,000 years.

Creating a new landscape from scratch is challenging, but Mike Pooley, CHEP’s Managing Director, UK & Ireland, is relishing the task ahead. “I’m really excited about this project, and very much looking forward to the first tree planting session in the Autumn,” Mr Pooley said. “Timber is obviously a crucial raw material that underpins the nature of our business, and while we know that pallet pooling reduces the strain on timber supplies, it’s more visible for us to be able to give something back in this way in terms of creating a brand new forest. It’s a wonderful project.”

The National Forest is now well underway with woodland cover having increased from about 6% in 1991 to more than 18% today. More than 7.8 million trees have already been planted, through making green almost 6,000 hectares (14,800 acres) of derelict coalfield land and mineral workings, and through converting farmland to woods. Other wildlife habitats are also being created or brought back under proper management.

National Forest Company Chief Executive, Sophie Churchill, said: “I’m delighted that CHEP is supporting The National Forest in this way, as it is clear that the environment and sustainability are at the forefront of the way we both operate. I’m looking forward to getting to know CHEP over these next three years, and seeing the new area of woodland at Normanton develop.”

Given the nature of its business, sustainable timber supplies are a fundamental component of CHEP pallets. This initial sponsorship agreement with the National Forest Company will result in the planting of more than 12,000 trees over a six-hectare site at Normanton, Leicestershire over the next three years. CHEP will use the tree-planting sessions as employee team-building events as part of its wider sustainability programme to engage its 1,000 UK & Ireland employees.

CHEP continuously manages and maintains strict timber sourcing policies, which support the replenishment of natural resources by sourcing timber in a responsible and sustainable manner. CHEP is now the only pooling company in the world with both an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) multisite certification. CHEP estimates that the use of its pallet pools, rather than disposable pallets, reduce timber use by the equivalent of 16 million trees per annum worldwide.

ABOuT THE NATiONAL FOREsT The National Forest area covers 200 square miles of the counties of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Its objective is to increase woodland cover within its boundaries from an initial six per cent to about a third. To date the proportion of woodland cover in the Forest has already trebled to 18.4 per cent and 7.8 million trees have been planted. The National Forest provides environmental, social and economic benefits, including landscape enhancement, creation of new wildlife habitats and major new access and leisure opportunities. It is an excellent example of sustainable development – with environmental improvement providing a stimulus both to economic regeneration and to community pride and activity.

To achieve these objectives, the National Forest Company leads the creation of The National Forest, working in partnership with landowners, local authorities, private business, voluntary organisations and local communities and has strong support from Government, politicians and the public. The Company receives grant in aid from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The National Forest Company and partners won the inaugural Sustainable Development UK Award, for their work in Ashby Woulds, at the heart of The National Forest.

CHEP PARTNERs WiTH FAREsHARE TO TACKLE FOOD POVERTY & WAsTECHEP UK & Ireland is working in partnership with FareShare, Britain’s Most Admired Charity 2010, to tackle food poverty and waste.

FareShare is a national charitable organisation that works with the food industry to take surplus food that is fit for purpose but would otherwise be going to landfill. They then redistribute this reclaimed food to over 700 charities, such as hostels and day care centres, where the food can be put to good use. As such, FareShare is at the forefront of tackling two of our most urgent societal issues – food poverty and food waste.

FareShare has been operating since 2004 as an independent charity and today has 17 locations around the UK. It aims to help vulnerable groups, whether they are homeless, elderly, children, or other groups in food poverty within our communities.

Through working with key supply chain partners, like CHEP, and other key players within the food industry like Sainsbury’s and Nestlé, FareShare’s food feeds 35,000 people every day across the country. By the end of 2012 the target is that 50,000 people will be benefiting from the programme.

CHEP’s integral position at the heart of the UK food industry supply chain can play a pivotal role in helping FareShare to continue to deliver its commitments. CHEP will be supporting FareShare across a wide number of initiatives, and one area is to open all of the 17 FareShare depots to accept CHEP pallets and suspend the normal channel classification. This means it will cost the same to transfer pallets to FareShare as the major multiples.

NEWsLETTER NAME COMPETiTiON…We received dozens of suggestions for a new name for this newsletter, including several very strong candidates. However, we have also received some very strong feedback that the current name of Sustainability Matters should be retained as it captures the essence of the newsletter. So after extensive deliberation, we’ve decided to retain the name Sustainability Matters. The £50 of M&S vouchers will now be given as an extra prize in the Reader’s Competition. Thank you to all who took part.

DiD YOu KNOW? 1 tonne of food generates 4.5 tonnes of

CO2 during production, and for every tonne of food that is sent to landfill a further 0.5 tonnes of CO2 is generated.

4 million people in the UK cannot afford to buy healthy food and live in food poverty.

1 tonne of food rescued by FareShare is enough to produce 2,380 meals.

Every day an average of 35,000 people benefit from the service FareShare provides.

Last year FareShare redistributed 3,600 tonnes of food which contributed towards 8.6 million meals. By diverting this food away from landfill, FareShare helped businesses save 1,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions last year.

As well as redistributing food, FareShare provides a programme of education and vocational training opportunities – the Employability and Eat Well Live Well programmes.
