Case Study Photo Etching Process Produces Model ResultsOTW Designs chose Chempix to produce a brass photo etched deck incorporating the finest detail for its functional model of a German Type VII U Boat. The German Type VII U Boat, commonly featured in war movies, was the ‘Volkswagen of submarines’ with some 704 constructed between the late 1930s and 1944, in comparison to the British S Class of which only some 65 were built. In its original form the Type VII was 64.51 metres long with a 5.85 metre beam.

When OTW Designs decided to produce a functional model kit of the vessel the company looked at previous offerings before deciding to produce a brass photo etched deck incorporating the finest detail. The company chose Chempix to carry out the work because of its vast experience in producing precision etched kits for railway engine modellers.

Prior to OTW Designs’ offering the modeller was given a sheet of glass fibre and expected to cut out by hand the 1750 drainage slots in the deck. The new model is 1/32nd scale and the deck is fully detailed down to the 1750 drainage slots and anti-slip surface, each individually highlighted by Chempix’s precision photo etching process. Together with the hull, fittings and dive/propulsion system, this kit claims to be the best of its kind available, a view shared by many top modellers and museums.

Case Study Etched Packaging Brings CD Distinction‘Quaristice’ is the latest album release from electronic music group Autechre and the group’s ninth album on Warp Records, a label known for its pioneering electronic music artists.

The album was initially made available for download but it received a physical release on March 3, 2008… with a difference and what is thought to be a first in the UK music industry.

The 20 track album was released as a special limited edition with alternative versions of 11 tracks included on a second 68 minute CD… all encased in a photo etched, stainless steel case.

The album artwork was created by the Designers Republic and the case itself was photo etched from annealed, 304 stainless steel by Chempix, the Birmingham based etching specialists. The cases then received a low tack poly coating on both sides and were made available to the record company in a matter of days.

The release was limited to 1000 copies and sold out within 12 hours of being announced, just in time for the group’s live promotional tour.
