Conclusions  •  Source  determination  is  a  often  a  very  difficult  question  to  answer  

•  No  single  test  provides  a  “silver  bullet”  when  it  comes  to  characterizing  the  nature,  age,    and  source  of  contamination  

•  Multiple  “lines-­‐of-­‐evidence”    are  needed  in  order  to  answer  the  question(s)

Dear Bill and Duane: This letter documents the results of the data validation review of the chemical analyses of organic and inorganic compounds completed on groundwater samples associated with Philip Services Corporation’s (PSC) Georgetown 1st quarter 2013 sampling event. The data were validated to verify the laboratory quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures were documented and that the overall quality of the data reported is sufficient to support its intended purposes. A summary of the data set, the analytical methods used to complete the chemical analyses, the data validation procedures used, and the overall assessment of data quality is presented below.

Data Set

The data set consisted of 37 water samples (i.e., 28 groundwater samples, 2 field duplicates, 5 trip blanks, and 2 field blanks) that were collected by PSC in February 2013. A summary of the samples collected and analyses completed is presented in Table 1. Analyses were completed by Columbia Analytical Services, Inc. (CAS) located in Kelso, Washington work orders K1301401. CAS submitted a complete hardcopy data validation deliverable and electronic data deliverable (EDD).

Analytical Methods The analytical methods used by the laboratories to complete the chemical analyses included the following:

! Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (nine Aroclors®) by solid-phase extraction and analysis by gas chromatography/electron capture detection (GC/ECD) using U.S. EPA SW-846 methods 3535A and 8082A, respectively (U.S. EPA 2013).

! Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) (48 target analytes with co-eluting compounds included) by purge and trap and analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) operated in the full scan mode using U.S. EPA SW-846 Methods 5030B and 8260C, respectively (U.S. EPA 2013).
