WHAT RESPONSIBLE CARE?
•Arising from the chemical disasters in the early 80’s -
Canadian Chemical Producers Association began the
initiative in 1984.
•It is an initiative of the global chemical industry in which
companies, through their national associations (CAIA in
South Africa), commit to work together to continuously
improve:
the health and safety of their workers
their environmental performance
their communication with stakeholders.
•Responsible Care has been adopted by 53 countries
globally.

Africa in 1994 by the Chemical and Allied
Industries’Association (CAIA), with 15
signatories.

Slide 5
RESPONSIBLE CARE IN AFRICA
Responsible Care is only implemented in
South Africa and Morocco. Egypt is starting to
implement Responsible Care.
The industry chemical association is the
custodian of Responsible Care and would
promote interest in industry in that particular
country.
Not
all African countries have industry
associations. Some do though have Chemical
Societies e.g.:
-Ethiopia
-Egypt
-Nigeria
-Kenya
-Tunisia
-West Africa

CAIA’s INFLUENCE IN AFRICA
•CAIA would like RC to expand into Africa, specifically in the SADC
countries.
•CAIA supports any initiative from African countries to implement
Responsible Care and has been requested to cooperate with the Egyptian
Chamber of Chemical Industries –
Federation of Egyptian Industriesand
the Egyptian
Environmental
Compliance Office and Sustainable
Development .
•Via our PR company, we publicize our three Responsible Care Workshops
in the SADC countries and welcome delegates from such countries.
•CAIA supports regional harmonization in the SADC region -sub-regional
