Chemical resistanceGeneral information regarding chemical resistanceIntroductionPlastic materials are now widely used in pipelineconstruction. Pipes made from plastics are used not onlyfor drinking water, water for general use and wastewater, but also for the conveyance of aggressive liquidsand gases. Expensive pipe materials such as linedmetal, ceramic or glass, have largely been replaced byplastic pipes. It is, however, important that the mostsuitable plastic material is selected for each application. The Chemical Resistance List in this section serves as auseful guide in this respect. The list is periodicallyrevised to include the latest findings. It contains all theplastics and elastomers in the GF product range whichcan come into direct contact with the media. Theinformation is based on experiments, immersion and, when available, on data from tests which includetemperature and pressure as stress factors. The resultsachieved in immersion experiments cannot be appliedwithout reservation to pipes under stress, i.e. internalpressure, as the factor stress corrosion cracking is often
not taken into consideration. In certain cases it can be ofadvantage to test the suitability under the plannedworking conditions. The tests referred to have beencarried out partly by GF and partly by the InternalStandardisation Organisation (ISO) or nationalstandards organisations.Pure chemicals were used for the tests. If a mixture ofchemicals is to be conveyed in practice, this may affectthe chemical resistance of the plastic. It is possible inspecial cases to carry out appropriate tests with thespecific mixture. Suitable test equipment is available atGF for this purpose, which we regard as part of ourservice to the customer. We are always willing to giveindividual advice at any time. In this connection it isworth mentioning that GF already possesses informationconcerning the behaviour towards plastics of a numberof chemicals or mixtures of chemicals which are not yetincluded in this list.
Instructions for the use of the chemical resistance listGeneralFollowing the assertions outlined in the introduction theattached list should be regarded as a valuable tool forfinding the most suitable material for a given application.Note: The list has been compiled based on ideal andmostly simplified conditions of laboratory testing; real lifeand field applications are subjected to working conditionsthat might be defined by more complex factors.Consequently any statement quoted in our chemicalresistance list should be regarded as a guiding value. In particular, we would like to emphasize that such a list -by nature - cannot supply the following information:Ï All relevant details of the respective experiment that
has been the source for a given set of dataÏ Possible influence of dynamic effectsÏ Long-term effectsÏ Possible influence due to the method of processing, the thermal history as well as the exact formulation ofthe respective samples
Ï Behaviour of mixtures of different media or effectsbased on discontinuous service
Ï (Detailed) characterisation of the corrosionphenomenon / deterioration observed
Ï Derivation of the max. applicable service pressureÏ Consideration of all chemicals
Contacting your GF representativeThus, if it comes to material decisions and there is aneed for selecting the proper polymer (grade), please donot hesitate to contact GF; based on decades ofpractical experience with polymer piping systemsapplied in industry and chemical engineering, GF hasacquired an outstanding knowledge in: .Ï Practical field testing, case studiesÏ Theoretical background (corrosion science, polymerformulations, possible influences of processing, etc.)
Ï Relevant literature
Apart from that, GF is a very active member in a globalnetwork for all aspects of corrosion regarding polymers;all this enables us to support the individual enquiries ofour customers efficiently. However, we cannot exclude situations where the stockof available data will not completely answer a customersenquiry. In such cases, a simple laboratory testinstallation under field test conditions is stronglyrecommended. The data are provided as is and there is no warranty orrepresentation, neither express nor implied, that they arefree from errors. We shall not be liable for any damagesof any kind that may result from the use of this data.

ClassificationThe customary classifications:Ï resistantÏ conditionally resistant andÏ not recommended
are depicted by the signs: +, 0 and -, which allow simplepresentation and application. These classifications aredefined as:
Resistant: +Within the acceptable limits of pressure and temperaturethe material is unaffected or only insignificantly affected.
Conditionally resistant: 0The medium can attack the material or cause swelling.Restrictions must be made as regards pressure and/ortemperature, taking the expected service life intoaccount. The service life of the installation can benoticeably shortened. Further consultations with GF arerecommended in any case.
Not recommended: -The material cannot be used with the medium at all, oronly under special conditions.
Solvent cement joints with Tangit/DytexSolvent cement joints on ABS, PVC-U or PVC-C madewith Tangit cement are generally as resistant as thematerial of the piping system itself.
The use of Dytex solvent cement is recommended forcement jointing of PVC-U or PVC-C in connection withthe following acids:
Medium Up to % concentration
Sulphuric acid e 70 % H2SO4Chromic-sulphuric acid mixture e 70 % H2SO4 + 5 % K2Cr2O7 / Na2Cr2O1Chromic acid d 10 % CrO3Hydrochloric acid e 25 % HClNitric acid e 20 % HNO3Sodium hypochlorite (potassium hypochlorite) e 6 % NaOClHydrogen peroxide e 5 % H2O2Hydrofluoric acid e 0% HF
For all the media mentioned above in lowerconcentrations, Tangit solvent cement should be used.Due to the effects of these acids on the pipe material, werecommend using pipes with a pressure rating PN 16.For the expected life time and compressive strength, please contact your GF representative.Attention! Usually the allowable pressure must bedecreased by one pressure rating (thus PN16 to PN10).When using Dytex in PVC-C piping construction with theabove mentioned acids, the pressure and temperaturerequirements for PVC-U must be adhered to.Because Dytex is not gap-filling, a special cementjointing procedure is required and is described in thechapter on jointing technology.
Fusion jointsIn the case of PE, PP and PVDF (SYGEF®) heat fusionjoints have practically the same chemical resistance asthe respective material. In conjunction with media whichcould cause stress cracking, the fused joints can besubjected to an increased risk due to residual stressfrom the jointing process. In such cases a professionally
executed welding is absolutely necessary. Thesensitivity against tension fracture formation can bereduced substantially by a thermal retreatment(tempering).
Sealing materialsDepending upon the working conditions and the stressinvolved, the life span of the sealing materials can differfrom that of the pipeline material. Seals in PTFE, whichis not included in this list, are resistant to all thechemicals listed. The greater permeability of PTFEshould, however, be considered. Under certain workingconditions, for example when conveying highlyaggressive media such as hydrochloric acid, thismaterial characteristic must be taken into account.
General summary and limits of applicationsThe following table includes all the materials containedin the GF product range, and their abbreviations. Thesummary gives preliminary information regarding thegeneral behaviour of the materials and the temperaturelimits.

Compressible mediaWhen defining allowable operating conditions, specialcare is required in choosing chemically resistant pipingand sealing materials when transporting compressibleoperating media (gases) or solutions of gases in fluidswhich have low boiling points (high vapour pressures)through plastic piping systems.Suitable materials for compressible media are those thatunder standard conditions and at low temperatures donot tend toward brittle fractures owing to their ductility.Such materials include polyethylene (PE) andacrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). All other rawmaterials such as polypropylene (PP-H), polyvinylchloride (PVC-U/-C) or polyvinyliden fluoride (PVDF) areto be limited to d 0.1 bar with respect to the operatingpressure of gases. Higher pressures are possible ifsecondary containment piping systems are used (forenvironmental protection, brittle effects, gas shocks, intoxication)For low boiling point fluids, such as liquid gas orsolutions of gases in liquids, for example, hydrochloricacid, the associated vapour pressure of the media has to
be taken into account. Furthermore, outgassing (due tochanges in the media composition) or vaporisation (dueto an inadmissible, high pressure increase) are to beprevented by relevant limitation of the operatingtemperature or by preventing the vapour pressure fromexceeding the operational pressure. It is important topoint out that, in such cases of leakage, the suddenescape of large gas or vapour volumes is to beconsidered a dangerous condition.Relatively high flow velocities must be assumed whentransporting humid gases (aerosols) or followingpressure drops in plastic piping systems carrying fluidshaving high vapour pressures. These can cause thedevelopment of high levels of electrostatic charge. Sucha condition exhibits an additional source of danger ifflammable media or mixtures which can explode whenmixed with air are involved.Note: This document contains no notice of guarantees, rather serves only to provide technical information.
