The U.S. chemical manufacturing industry is experiencing a renaissance due in large part to greater accessibility and decreasing costs of ethane and ethane-based raw materials indispensable to the industry. Manufacturing industries highly dependent on chemical products, such as the automotive, plastics and rubber product industries, prosper in Georgia because of strong demand. Between 2010 and 2016, Georgia’s export values in the automotive manufacturing industry grew nearly 70 percent, while exports in the plastics and rubber products industry grew more than 28 percent. In all, manufacturing export values increased more than 23 percent. Additionally, Georgia’s housing market has recovered. In 2016 alone, 51,675 housing permits were issued, a 180 percent increase in the last five years. With these industries going strong, chemical product manufacturers can expect consistent returns on their investment.

Georgia chemical companies can rely on robust and growing demand for products.

New and expanding chemical companies have created more than 2,000 jobs since 2011.

Georgia Tech is the highest producer of chemical graduates in the country.

The Georgia Institute of Technology is the highest producer of graduates in fields applicable to the chemical and plastic and rubber product manufacturing industries. In addition to Georgia Tech, several other Georgia universities offer strong engineering programs, including Kennesaw State University and the University of Georgia.

Georgia’s Centers of Innovation

A division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Georgia has six centers of innovation readily available to businesses: aerospace, agribusiness, energy, life sciences and information technology, logistics, and manufacturing. Directly related to the plastics and rubber product industry are:

Georgia Center of Innovation for Manufacturing (COIM): The Georgia Center of Innovation for Manufacturing helps manufacturing operations all over the state tap into university research partners and access new markets through product and process development assistance, technology transfer, access to equipment and a wide industry network. Located within the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute, the Center has direct access to a number of industry experts who can provide customized solutions to Georgia manufacturers and give them the opportunity to test new technologies before implementing costly process changes. Georgia Tech’s Center for Chemical Evolution: The Center for Chemical Evolution is one of eight Centers for Chemical Innovation (CCI) nationally. This National Science Foundation (NSF) program supports research centers, like the Center for Chemical Evolution, focused on major, long term fundamental chemical research challenges. CCIs integrate research, innovation, education and informal science communication. Each CCI focuses on a specific grand challenge in chemistry and gathers researchers from across the country to address that challenge.

University of Georgia’s Chemical Biology Group: The Chemical Biology Group brings together chemists and biologists to apply chemical methods to problems in biology. This often involves the use of synthetic chemical compounds, which are designed with guidance from structural biology, to manipulate physiological processes.
