  • Chemistry Course Syllabus Room 115

Course Format: This is a one-year chemistry course divided into two semesters. Each semester is worth credit towards graduation. Each semester is separate and of equal importance. Each semester is divided into two 9-week grading periods. In order for a Chemistry credit to be verified, the student must pass the course and successfully complete the End of Course Standards of Learning (SOL) test with a grade of 400 or higher. Each student must earn at least one verified science for a standard diploma.

  • Classroom Policies: Sit in YOUR assigned seat and remain seated while the class is being addressed. CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONICS MUST BE OFF AND OUT OF SIGHT. Respect yourself and others: Do not touch anyone or their property. Do not damage school

property. Behave in a manner that does not disrupt teaching or learning. Demonstrate integrity in words and actions. Allow for an open, fair, and caring environment free from disruptions, discrimination, and

harassment. Consequences: Rewards: -Verbal warning -Verbal praise -Teacher/student conference -Positive phone calls or emails home. -Parent contact (email, phone call, or conference) -Reinforcement activities or bonus points -Detention -PAWS -Referral to administrator for disciplinary action. Classroom Expectations Coming prepared to class is essential to student success. This information is intended to help parents and students prepare for success early in the school year. Adjustments will be made as necessary. ** Students are expected to ATTEND CLASS and arrive on time! Students who are not in the classroom

by the time the tardy bell finishes ringing are considered tardy. After the third tardy a discipline referral will be sent to the dean. If a student reports to class 10 or more minutes late without a pass, he/she will be considered skipping and a referral will be sent to the dean.

** Students are expected to bring their notebook, paper, pencils, and workbooks to every class. There will

be material checks, periodically, as part of the class work grade. In addition, several quizzes throughout the year may be open notebook so having an up-to-date notebook is important.

** Participation in class is for your benefit, so stay alert and raise your hand to get involved. I will never

fault you for putting forth your best effort and I will not allow others to do so either. There are many ways to participate in my class. Participation does not require you to be an expert. It only requires you to interact with me and/or your fellow students about chemistry, and your participation will make my class (and your grades) even better.

** In accordance with school policy, student must have a teacher officiated pass in order to leave the classroom. One person at a time leaves the room with the hall pass. Students will be limited to 10 restroom/water passes per quarter.

** Assignments must be completed in pencil or blue/black ink. 5 points will be deducted for the use of

other colors unless otherwise directed by the teacher. Assignments must be headed with: name, date, and block# in the upper right hand corner (5 point deduction for missing info) and are due on time. If homework is not turned in during the allotted time, it will be considered late.

LATE WORK POLICY: o One day late (the next school day) will receive a 10% deduction. o Two or more days late (the next class period or later) will receive a 40% deduction. o Long-term projects will not be accepted more than a week late.

  • Grading Scale:

** TEST WEIGHT: Test and project grades will not be weighted equally. These weights will be determined

based on the number of tests and projects given each quarter. Highest test grade will be weighted the most and lowest test grade will be weighted the least. For example, if in one quarter there are three tests and one project, the highest test grade could be weighted at 15%, the lowest at 5%, and the middle test grade and project at 10% each.

** TEST CORRECTIONS: Students may increase test scores by completing test corrections. All students

are eligible to do test corrections for any test as long as they have completed ALL assignments for the unit being assessed. If a student has any zeros by the day they take their unit test that student will not be eligible to make test corrections. This also applies for students who have been absent. Test corrections will be held after school from 3:15-4:25 PM (dates TBA). Activities should be planned accordingly since these days and times ARE NOT FLEXIBLE.

** CHEATING: I have a zero-tolerance policy for cheating. You should assume that every assignment is

to be completed for a grade by you and you alone. There will be opportunities for collaborative work and you will be told specifically when those opportunities arise. I consider copying any assignment, including homework, to be cheating. Utilizing someone elses notes on an open notes quiz instead of bringing your own notes is cheating. Assignments are designed to help you practice using the information you are learning, as well as to help me identify areas in which the class may need additional instruction before being tested. In the end, students who cheat have lower grades in my class because test scores reflect what you have actually learned. Cheating will result in a zero for the assignment, quiz, or test.

** After a class absence, it is the students responsibility to make up all work missed, within the time

frame established by teacher. This may require them to stay after school for certain make-ups. Students missing a scheduled quiz or test should be prepared to make it up within the week they return. Make up work will be available in the absentee binder and it is the students responsibility to retrieve any missing assignments.

** OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE: After school tutoring is offered Monday-Thursday upon request should

students need assistance with any of the course material including homework, makeup work, and projects. Each student also has the choice of completing extra credit assignments throughout each nine weeks.

** Stay updated with daily activities, homework, important due dates, test dates, classroom handouts, and

extra credit opportunities. http://hughes-chem.weebly.com/ ** Parents can keep up with their students progress by accessing Parent Portal. You can use it to access

  • Student Safety Contract Purpose: Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority for students, teachers, and parents. To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been adapted from the Flinn Scientifics Student Safety Contract and provided to you in this student contract. These rules must be followed at all times. Both you and a parent or guardian must sign the second page of this contract before you can participate in the laboratory activities. I will file the signature page of this contract to keep record of this agreement. The rules outlined on this page are to be kept in your science notebook for reference. General Guidelines: 1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times during the laboratory.

    2. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask the instructor before proceeding.

    3.

Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask the instructor before proceeding.

    4. When first entering a science room, do not touch materials in the laboratory area until you are instructed to do so.

    5. Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor. Never do anything in the laboratory that is not called for in the laboratory procedures or by your instructor.

    6. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are dangerous and are prohibited.

    7. Work areas should be kept clean and tidy all times. Bring only your laboratory instructions, worksheets, and/or reports to the work area.

    8. Keep aisles clear. Push your chair under the desk when not in use.

    9. Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment, including the first aid kit, eyewash station, fire extinguisher, and fire blanket.

    10. Any time chemicals, heat, or glassware are used, students will wear laboratory goggles. There will be no exceptions to this rule!

    11. Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth, and body while using chemicals.

    12. Students are never permitted in the science storage rooms unless given specific permission by their instructor.

    13. When using sharp instruments, always carry with tips and points pointing down and away. Always cut away from your body. Never try to catch falling sharp instruments. Grasp sharp instruments only by the handles.

    14. Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to the instructor immediately, no matter how trivial it may appear.
