Welcome back
Term 2 promises to be action packed, so I hope everyone is well rested after the
Easter break.
Thank you to the Probus Club of the Long Beach City
On behalf of our school community I would like to thank Probus very much for your
gift of the picture story book, Do Not Forget Australia, presented to our school on
Friday 4th April by Barbara Fagan.
The students were captivated by Barbara’s description of the story as she described
it to them at our assembly. This week, as students have returned from holiday and
leading up to ANZAC Day, they have enjoyed listening to the story in their class-
rooms.
In particular, students in years 3 and 4 have found the book especially relevant to
their studies for the term where they are exploring our history.
The students are being invited to imagine life in the days of their grandparents and
great-grandparents. As they discover things about the past they come to appreciate
the reasons and feelings behind commemorative days such as ANZAC Day.
Studies during term 2 lead students to an appreciation of the importance of our his-
tory, what we have learnt from our past, and how we need to cherish things that
must never change. Our students will be conscious of the fact that what they are do-
ing now and what is happening in their world now will become the history of tomor-
row.
Ferry Disaster in South Korea
Our thoughts are with the many families in Korea who lost loved ones as a result of
the ferry accident last week. This is a very sad time for Korea.
Shade Sail
Work has commenced on the shade sail for the Junior playground, but unfortunately
the very wet weather during the first week of the holidays delayed this project for a
week. Hopefully the sail will go on next week.
WELCOME BACK!
Welcome back to Term 2. It has been great catching up with students and families this week and
hearing about their holidays. A visit to the pictures seemed to be the popular choice of activity
with the Lego Movie voted as the favourite! I might have to see it this weekend.
Our staff have planned another exciting term of learning for our students, with the whole school
Inquiry focus relating to ‘Change’.
Our preps, fives and sixes begin their swimming next week. This valuable program is a very important feature of
our PE program. I am sure the students will continue to develop their swimming skills. Thank you to our parents
who have volunteered to assist with ‘bus and pool duty’.
BIKE EDUCATION COMES TO YEAR FOUR!
During week 4, our year four students will begin their bike education ‘off road’ training. This Vic roads program
teaches children the skills and knowledge required to ride a bicycle safely and independently.
It involves a mix of practical activities conducted off-road (in the school grounds) together with classroom activi-
ties. The five modules include: getting started; basic bike skills and building skills towards riding in traffic and rid-
ing on paths.
Staff member-Nicky Smith and parent –Sue Bray have recently completed the training course and will work with
the year three and four teachers to deliver this training. Thank you also to Georgie Fyfe-Jamieson from Kingston
Council for her on-going support of our road safety programs.
Students will require an approved helmet and bike in good condition. If your child does not have either a bike or
helmet, please let your classroom teacher know.
DO YOU HAVE A SPARE BIKE AT HOME?
Many families have bikes that their children have grown out of, or are no longer needed. Sometimes they sit in
the shed or end up in the hard rubbish collection. If you have one of these treasures at home that would suit a
year 4 student and is in good condition, please contact Jan Smith. We would love to organise a set of bike for
student use.

CPS ANNUAL CROSS COUNTRY
On Wednesday 23rd April the Year 3-6 students did a walk through of the CPS Cross Country Track. The official
competition will be on Wednesday 30th April at Bicentennial Park, Chelsea. Students will need to wear running
shoes and shorts/skorts. If it is cold students are encouraged to bring a pair of long pants to school. Students will
also need to bring a water bottle.
We would love to have as many parent helpers as we can muster to assist with marshalling, recording the laps and
cheering the students along. Please meet us down there or come and walk with us.
We will be leaving school at 9.05 and the first race will start at 9.15. We hope to be finished by 11.00.
PREP AND YEAR 5/6 SWIMMING PROGRAM
Students in Prep and Year 5 and 6 will be participating in an eight day Swimming Program run by Toby Haenen
Swimming Centre next week. The program, conducted by professional swimming instructors, is designed to devel-
op the confidence and skills of all children, catering for non-swimmers through to those of squad level.
The dates for the swimming program are 28/04, 29/04, 01/05, 02/05, 05/05, 06/05, 08/05, 09/05.
All students are required to provide their own bathers, towel and swimming hat. Googles are optional. Parents are
welcome to come and watch their child swim. Please speak to your child’s class teacher regarding the times.
2014 PRIMARY SCHOOL GOLF COMPETITION
The 2014 Primary School Golf Competition will be held at Sandhurst Golf Club on Monday 26th May. Parents will
have to take their child to the venue and stay for the duration of the tournament. Students must be in Year 3 – 6,
they will play 9 holes, with a maximum of ten strokes per hole. Please see Mrs Sewell for an entry form.

Experience The Magic Of Hosting
Every year, families throughout Victoria invite students from around the world into their homes, and gain a taste of another culture. The Lambie family of VIC share their joys of hosting Italian student Federico, as they farewell him back home to Italy:
“It is with mixed emotions that we say goodbye to Federico. He has certainly become part of our family and will be missed by all of us and the many friends he has made during his stay on Phillip Island. He has been a great ambassador for the exchange program because he has maximised every opportunity that has come his way. He has shown his courage, initiative, hunger to learn and a genuine interest in everyone he has met over the past five months.
Whether it was playing soccer for the local team, singing a lead role in the musical, learning to surf, comparing Silvio Ber-lusconi to Rupert Murdoch in a media assignment or doing work experience in a bicycle shop, Fede did it with commitment and enthusiasm. He is an inspiration to us all.
As an identical twin, he was the instant choice for our own twin boys, who found him to be a gentle and playful big brother. He taught them some fancy soccer maneuvers and piano chords, he often wrestled with them on the floor and helped them with their homework.
Our time together has flown by. We will be very sad to say goodbye soon.”
