Principal Report Teacher Performance Reviews:

During this week all teachers at CHPS have met with either John Mace or myself to complete

their Mid-Cycle Performance Review. The mid Cycle performance review is part of a three

part cycle. In May teachers met with us to review their performance during 2011 and to build

their plans for 2012. In October, we meet to assess how they have been going with these

plans. Areas that are evaluated are:

How their program is supporting the school’s four year Strategic Plan and the Annual

Implementation Plan. These plans are built by the school to reflect development

needed as measured through data we have analysed such as Naplan, school reports,

Surveys such as the student Attitude to School etc.

How each teacher is meeting the needs of our students under the headings of the four

key questions that drive learning at our school:

1. What is it that our students need to learn? i.e. strong knowledge of the Victorian

Curriculum, the developing Australian Curriculum and key areas to be

addressed based on our Naplan results is reflected in their termly, weekly and

daily planning and curriculum delivery.

2. How will you know that your students have learnt it? i.e. the adherence to our

school wide yearly assessment timeline, the use of regular and timely common

formative assessments and the accurate analysis of this assessment to deliver

a personalised learning program to meet the needs of all students.

3. How do you respond when your students do not learn? i.e. strategies are in

place to support intervention in the classroom when students are struggling with

a concept and the work is differentiated to meet each student’s needs.

4. How do you respond if a student already knows the work? i.e. curriculum is

differentiated, interests are catered for, delivery is varied and student work

supports enrichment.

All teachers have a clear role and responsibility description. This ranges from level

based to whole school priorities dependant on the teacher’s experience e.g. Literacy

Leader, Assessment and Reporting, Level leader , Professional Development

coordination and analysis. Performance in these roles is evaluated and support is given

to enhance achievement in these areas.

This process is long and time consuming but extremely rewarding. I have thoroughly enjoyed

speaking with our teachers. Their level of commitment, ability to constructively reflect on their

performance, knowledge of your children and their learning and social needs is a credit to

them and determination to continually strive for improvement at CHPS is a credit to them.

Principal Report The ongoing work that is being done at CHPS will culminate on our final Curriculum Day (Pupil Free Day) for 2012 – Monday 5th November. This day is being

coordinated and driven by Raelene Major and Aleesha Wood and the key focus areas are:

1. A school wide model to address intervention

2. The further development of our Inquiry approach to Science, History, Geography

3. The scaffolding of Genre Writing expectations from Prep to 6

Transition:

Transition falls in to three categories; Kinder to Pre, Grade to Grade and Grade 6 to Secondary College.

Much work is done at CHPS to support all areas of transition to be seamless and stress-free for your children. Below is a breakdown of the programs in place

for 2012.

Kinder to Prep:

Our future preps have attended two of the five sessions run in Terms 3 and 4

Each of these session increase in time, culminating in a full morning where the new preps attend classroom activities and experience specialist classes e.g. Art, PE, Preforming Arts

New parents have attending two of the five information morning and participated in our evening “hands on “session where they take part in rotational groups and experience how their children will be taught.

Grade to Grade:

All students will participate in a four part cross school transition program

There will be three, one hour session where your children will work with teachers in the grade level that they will be in in 2013

These sessions will not reflect the teacher who will be teaching them or the students that will necessarily be in their grade.

The fourth transition session will be for a longer period of time and coincide with the State Wide Transition Day on Tuesday December the 11th

This program has a number benefits including trailing student grouping dynamics and easing transition anxiety.

Grade 6 to Secondary:

Are completing many discussions and activities with the Grade 6 teachers

Will be participating in the Kingston Network Schools Transition Program.

This program is designed to help prepare students for transition to secondary school and will consist of discussions and activities around the following topics: The Brain, Resilience, Healthy Lifestyle, Organisation and Time Management, and Mindfulness.

Our school will host a Parent Session about the transition to secondary school. This session will include similar topics and also include: The Parent’s Role and Where to find assistance. The purpose of this session is to give parents information about how they can help themselves and their child/children to successfully make the transition from primary to secondary school.

Parents and students will complete surveys to support the provision of support targeted to our school’s needs

Students will participate in the State Wide Transition Day on Tuesday 11t December at the school they will be attending in 2013. Kind Regards Jane Satchwell

EDUCATION MAINTENCE ALLOWANCE (EMA) INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Changes to the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for

2013:

The EMA continues to help families on lower incomes with

financial assistance to cover the cost of educational expenses

including textbooks, stationery, uniforms and excursions for

their child up until the age of 16.

From 2013, the Victorian Government is restructuring the EMA to

better target financial support to families on lower incomes.

Payments made direct to parents will be increased for eligible

recipients at all year levels up to age 16, with an additional

increase for parents with students in Years Prep and 7 in

recognition of the additional costs at these transition points.

In 2013 the annual EMA payment for families with children in

primary school (years 1-6) will receive a payment of $150.

Families with children in secondary school (Year 8 up until the

age of 16) will receive an annual payment of $250.

The School Start Bonus which was previously received by EMA

families has been discontinued as a separate payment from

2013. However, additional funding has been incorporated into

the EMA meaning that parents of children in Prep and Year 7 will

receive boosted EMA payments of $200 and $300 respectively in

those years.

From 2013, the EMA will no longer be paid 50/50 between the

parent and the school. The 50% school portion of the EMA will

no longer be paid to schools on behalf of parents. However, $62

million over four years will be redirected to the State’s most

needy schools to assist families on lower incomes. These funds

will form part of the school Student Resource Packages to be

allocated at the local level.

New EMA payment option

From 2013, on the EMA application form you can choose to have

your EMA payment;

Paid by direct deposit (Electronic Funds Transfer) into your nominated bank account or

Paid by cheque which will be posted to the school for collection or

Paid to the school to be held as credit which you can use

towards education expenses

The introduction of the new payment option to have the EMA

payment directed to the school provides parents with extra

flexibility to assist with budgeting towards education expenses.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the EMA in 2013, you must:

be either a parent or guardian of a primary or secondary

school student up to the age of sixteen; and

be an eligible beneficiary of a Centrelink pension, allowance or benefit within the meaning of the State Concessions Act

2004* or

be a Veterans Affairs (TPI) pensioner or be a temporary foster parent. * i.e – the parent/guardian must be the holder

of a valid Health Care Card or valid Pension Card.

The eligibility criteria must be met as at 29 January 2013

(Instalment One) and 15 July 2013 (Instalment Two).

Payment Amounts - 2013: *Student year level (or age for ungraded and special school students) will determine the amount payable.

Parents of students turning 16 years in 2013 are paid on a pro rata basis.

Contact: School Office for an EMA

application form and to lodge your

application. The closing date for EMA

application forms to be submitted to the

school is 28 February 2013.

Prep Years 1 - 6

Instalment One $140 $105

Instalment Two $60 $45

Annual Total $200 $150

SAFETY HOUSE

The Chelsea Heights Safety House Committee meets once a term at The Little Coffee Place in Wells Road.

If you are interested in learning more about the Program or are able to spare one hour per term to help us, please leave your name and phone number at the school office any time.

LIBRARY HELPERS

There is plenty of dust being stirred up in the library this term as we move towards revitalising the library for the students in

2013 and collating all of the teaching resources utilised in the classrooms. EVERY Wednesday is library project day for all of

Term 4. There is a group of parents meeting in the library every Wednesday morning at 9am to move, sort, scan, collate &

cover books and setup our new shelving. If you are available to help for a few hours on any Wednesday during Term 4 we

would love to see you there.

ASTHMA NEWS

CAREMONKEY AND ASTHMA AUSTRALIA

CareMonkey is a safe and free web app for sharing health care information. Asthma Australia has partnered with CareMonkey

in order to contribute to the safety and well-being of people with asthma. Parents can create a profile for their child in

CareMonkey which can be shared with trusted carers, including family, friends, teachers and sports coaches.

Vital information such as emergency contacts, health and safety alerts, medications, allergy details, asthma plan and more can

be easily shared.

Consider creating a profile for your child with asthma (or other medical condition) and share this with others including the staff

at your school or preschool.

Go to caremonkey.com for more information.

Holiday and Festival Asthma Trigger Warning

The upcoming holiday season and festivities planned during Term 4 and throughout the summer holidays may mean that your

child is exposed to new triggers for their asthma. It is important for parents and carers, and children themselves, to be aware

of changes to their environment and the activities that may impact on their asthma.

Christmas trees, both real and artificial could be triggers for people with asthma. Artificial trees may be quite dusty after being

stored away, while both real and artificial trees may harbour mould. It is important to ensure that artificial trees are cleaned

appropriately and that care is taken to select real trees that do not produce wind-borne pollen. All tree and other decorations

should cleaned and free from dust and mould when used at home.

Scented candles, room deodorisers and air fresheners may also trigger asthma in those susceptible to perfumes, and care

should be taken when purchasing these and other scented items at home.

Lastly, the added pressures of the year drawing to a close can cause stress and anxiety for many people, potentially triggering

asthma attacks. It is important to consider ways that the whole family can enjoy the holidays and feel safe happy and

comfortable.

Happy Holidays from The Asthma Foundation of Victoria. For further information, please contact the Asthma Foundation of Victoria on 1800 645 130 or email [email protected].
