1. Objectives:At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
a. familiarize themselves with the rules involving the subject-verb agreement;
b. participate in the class discussion actively; and
c. furnish a copy of the subject/verb rules in their notebooks.

Show a picture of a monkey and a turtle, then tell the children about how the two got into
an agreement on dividing the banana tree.
C. Lesson Proper
Learning Concepts: Rules on Subject-Verb Agreement1. The verb must always agree with its subject in number. A singular subject requires a
singular verb. A plural subject requires a plural verb.
2. Compound subjects joined by and require plural verbs.
3. If singular and plural subjects are joined by or, either...or, neither...nor the verb agrees
with the subject nearest it.

4. Intervening expressions like as well as, in addition to, no less than, with, together with,
besides, along with, accompanied by and others do not affect the number of the subject.
5. Nouns plural in form but singular in meaning requires singular verbs.
6. Nouns plural in form and meaning require plural verbs.
7. A collective noun taken as a unit requires a singular verb; if taken individually, it
requires a plural verb.
8. Subjects referring to measurement, amount of money, or distance are considered
singular, therefore, requires singular verbs.
9. The phrase "A number" requires a plural verb; while "the number" requires a singular
verb.
10. There is and There was should be used when the subject is singular; There are and
There were, when the subject is plural.
11. A noun introduced by a fraction or percent may take either a singular or plural verb
depending on the "of the" phrase.
