A seasonal round up of what is going on for schools

Learning with the National Trust

The Education department was fortunate enough to receive a generous donation from the North Cotswold Association of the National Trust, with the proviso that the money be spent on delivering impactful improvements to the core family/ school experience at Chedworth Roman Villa. The money has enabled us to provide a selection of costumes and effects for visitors of all ages.

Archaeology at the Villa

This summer marks the culmination of a five year programme of archaeological discovery. One of the highlights being the discovery of the North Wing reception room mosaic, which is enormous - 60 ft by 20 ft. This year’s excavations will confirm mosaic pavement in room 28. Who knows what we will discover?

What we can offer your school 45 minute classroom sessions inspecting and

handling replica and primary source materials, including bone, pottery, tesserae, metal, shells and building materials. Contributes towards an understanding of the importance of archaeological investigations with the “wow” of holding something that is “really Roman”.

45 minute session touring around the site with an expert guide. Investigating what it was like to live in the Villa 1700 years ago and to what extent Chedworth Roman Villa was typical of life in Roman Britain.

Living History - dressing-up in Roman outfits and using examples from the Bath House and Latrine to explain the Roman attitude to health and hygiene. Each student grinds up to 4 or 5 spices in a mortarium to make a medicine bag to take home.

Support for exams and assignments. Advise us in advance of the topic and we will aim to tailor the sessions to address your needs.

To arrange a visit, please call: Jane Lewis on 01242 890905 or e-mail [email protected] Owing to demand, it is advisable to book well in advance

I would like to say thank you to all of the wonderful staff at Chedworth Roman Villa for giving us such a fantastic day. The children were so enthused by their experiences today. They have written a short overview with some photographs which is on our school website if you would like to see it! The members of staff were so knowledgeable and captured the children's imagination with their explanations. I know they will remember their day for a very long time. Please pass on my thanks.
