ESSAY- CHECKLIST

Material evaluation has been defined by Tomlinson (2003:15) as ‘a procedure

that involves measuring the value (or potential value) of a set of learning materials’.

Evaluation can be carried out pre-use, in-use, or post-use. The main aim of

evaluating materials pre-use, according to Rubdy (2003:42), is to measure the

potential of what teachers and learners can do with them in the classroom. In-use

and post-use evaluations are important in establishing how successful learning

materials are (McDonough & Shaw, 2003:71).

My teaching materials are PowerPoint presentation and worksheet. Refer to

the checklist that I had done, I will evaluate my teaching materials. For my teaching

material, the material was appropriate for pupils. This is because I can indirectly

teach pupils the ICT’s skill. The material is also suitable to the level of the pupils.

Teacher can use PowerPoint as teaching material because the material is universal

which mean any level of pupils are suitable to use it. PowerPoint is also able to

attract pupils’ attraction and the material also long lasting. Teacher can use the

material many times. By using PPT, I can ensure that the material can be used for

task-based learning. PPT also can meet the pupils’ needs and can satisfy the

various teaching and learning styles. The PPT is one of the teaching materials that

flexible as we can edit it anytime anywhere. The material can be adapted to meet the

need of pupils in mixed class. The PPT also can attract pupils’ attention and interest.

Teacher can edit the content so that it will be meets pupils’ need. By using PPT,

teacher also can promote student engagement to participate during the activity and

this will encourage the group interaction between them.

Another teaching material that I will evaluate is the worksheet. The worksheet

is one of the traditional teaching materials that always been used by teachers around

the world. The material is appropriate for pupils as the worksheet just contain a

question and exercise for pupils. The material is suitable to the all level of pupils.

Teacher will only need to adapt and change the content of the lesson plan so that

teacher can use the teaching material. The material does not too attractive but

teacher can edit the worksheet to make it more beautiful. The material does not last

longer as pupils can throw away the worksheet of misplace the worksheet at home.

The material also cannot be used too many times. Task-based learning can be

occurred by using worksheet as teacher prepared the worksheet for pupils as their

work. The worksheet also can present option for meeting individual needs. The

material might be not satisfying the various teaching and learning styles. Teacher

can use the worksheet to promote pupils engagement. The material also can

encourage group interaction only if teacher plan to use worksheet for group activity.

If teacher decorate the worksheet, the material will have an interesting and effective.

As a conclusion, the evaluation of material revealed that although they were

based on a teacher-centred approach they could be adapted to make them more

suitable for a learning-centred classroom. By adapting activities or teaching

materials, teacher can make them engaging tasks with clear learning goals teachers

can provide young learners with experiences that enhance opportunities for

language learning.
