L ET us recall the most sig-

nificant and memorable

event in the early history

of the Israelites in regards to their

exodus from Egypt. God led them

out of slavery and rescued them

from their enemies. Today’s 1st

reading reminds us of God’s spe-

cial care and protection of the Isra-

elites.

Their faith and perseverance,

through both blessings and dangers

were in the hope of sharing in the

glory of the saints (Wis.18:9).

They were God’s chosen people

who had cooperated with God’s

plan for salvation.

It is wise to reflect on the many

instances God cared for us in the

past. How has God guided and

protected us… our families? Our

friends, our parish? Do we appre-

ciate God’s loving protection and

guidance? We can be rest assured

of God’s protection and guidance

for all the abundant blessings,

mercy and grace we receive espe-

cially during this Holy Year of

Mercy.

The 2nd reading recalls how

our early ancestors placed their

trust in God. The tradition about

the faith of Abraham is used as il-

lustration. By faith, Abraham,

when called to go to a place he

would later receive as his inheri-

tance, obeyed and went, even

though he did not know where he

was going” (Hebrew 11).

Indeed, Abraham and Sarah had

the virtues of faith, a lasting confi-

dence that God’s word would be

fulfilled. Faith in God leads to ac-

tion. We, too, are encouraged to

have similar faith. But again as hu-

mans, we have “possessions” that

YOUTH COFFEE CHAT

the canteen after Morning

Mass. Come join us for

some games and chat!!!

ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

It will be celebrated on Sun-

day the 14th of August in all

Masses instead of 15th Au-

gust this year.

during the retreat.

can distract us from the treasure of

faith. We come with our own

“baggage” - our worldly treasures,

our ego, comfort zones and skepti-

cisms of our faith journey. If we

trust in God, we can move in life.

Do we have faith in God’s provi-

dence for us? How can we show that

we trust in God? God is always call-

ing us to a deeper faith but first and

foremost, we have to eliminate those

“distractions” then only we can en-

joy the fullness of the virtues of

faith and patience.

Jesus in the Gospel teaches His

disciples about watchfulness. He

instructs them to light their lamps,

implying that they need to be watch-

ful even into the night in anticipa-

tion of the return of the master.

Likewise, while waiting for His re-

turn, we are called to live the life of

discipleship and faithful steward-

ship. It is our responsibility to re-

spond to Jesus’ calling; to live

simply and with integrity, detached

from possessions, to be alert and

ready, attentive to the master. In

what ways can we make ourselves

ready for the Lord? How well have

we lived out the Gospel call?

But again, we must remember

that Jesus also respects our freedom.

We are at liberty to say “yes” or

“no” when He comes. The question

is, when He comes, will we want to

keep our door closed, or open it

wide? Are we going to wait until the

end of time to welcome Jesus? Can

we begin today? How? Indeed, it’s a

mighty challenge for us but not im-

possible with God’s mercy and

grace.

Jesus assures us that God will

reward all those who are faithful and

trustworthy in their services even if

it is difficult to carry out. In the

meantime, we must persevere in our

living faith, trusting in the fulfill-

ment of the promises handed down

to us by the written words of God

that are found in the Holy Scriptures.

Pope Francis said, “To be faithful,

to be creative, we must be able to

change. To change! And why must I

change? So that I can adapt to the

situations in which I must proclaim

the Gospel. To stay close to God, we

need to know how to set out: we

must not be afraid to set out.”
