A Note From the Principal…
It has been a great start to the 2018-19 school year! It hardly seems possible that we are in week
three already. Your high schooler is settling in to their new classes, lunches, and activities. The
hallways and cafeteria are filled with social conversations and laughter. We have noticed a strong
pattern of students being on time to school which is helpful as they start their day on a good
note. Staff have been busy greeting students at their doors and working to make sure every
student feels welcome and connected.
One of our goals this year is to ensure every student has a go-to person, that ‘one’ staff member
they connect with at Davison High School. This is no small undertaking in high school of nearly
1700 students but we know students are much more likely to be successful if they have that
person. Students have recently spent time reviewing the Cardinal Code and what it looks like at
DHS. Students were also recently asked to identify their ‘one person’ at DHS. We will keep you
posted on our goal of building stronger connections with our students.
September 24 kicks off homecoming week. Student Council selected Pixar
Movies as the theme for this year. Each grade level has an identified movie: 9th grade: Toy Story.
10th grade: Finding Nemo. 11th grade: Monsters Inc. 12th grade: UP. The Powder Puff game
showcases the intense spirit displayed by our juniors vs seniors events from cheering to playing
football on the field! On Friday, the parade will begin at 5:00pm and will be followed by the home
football game against Flint at 7:30pm. The homecoming dance is slated for
Saturday evening 7-10pm. Please note the dance dress code found later in the newsletter.
Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to educate your high schooler. Our goal is to provide a
quality education along with many clubs and extracurricular activities they can join to supplement
their high school experience. If you ever have questions, need clarification or have a suggestion to
offer, please get in touch with us. We are a phone call or email away. We want your feedback and
your ideas! Thank you for being our partner in providing a quality high school experience for your
child.
Respectfully,
Sue A. Kenkel

Parents, we want you to know that attendance makes a
Difference. Be here every single day!
There is a strong correlation between good attendance and achieving academic success.
We want all students present everyday.
If a student has had more than 10 absences per semester in any class, they will be put on an attendance contract and will
possibly have credit withheld for that class.
The purpose of this contract is to inform you of your loss of credit due to violation of the attendance policy and to inform
you of what needs to happen in order for you to regain lost credit. To earn back credit in this course, you must do three
things:
1) Show a marked improvement in tardies and attendance, with no further unexcused absences.
2) Stay in the course, complete all work necessary and earn a passing grade in the course.
3) Write an appeal letter to the principal, stating the reasons for your violation of the attendance policy, stating that your
attendance has improved, and giving an update as to how you are doing (grade/work completion) in the course.
It is imperative that you write an appeal letter to the principal, Ms. Kenkel, no later than two weeks prior to the end of
the semester. If the appeal for credit reinstatement is denied, a score of 78% on the final semester exam is the equivalent
of earning a passing grade and constitutes a qualifying score to earn credit for the course.

MEDICAL INFORMATION
ASTHMA INHALERS AND EPIPENS
Attention parents of students who
use asthma inhalers or EpiPens:
According to the State of
Michigan, the district must have
an “Allergy Care Plan” (EpiPen) or
“Asthma Action Plan” (Inhalers).
Parents and physicians must also
fill out an “Authorization to
Administer Medication” form to
have on file in the school office in
order for the student to self
administer or for the medication
to be given by office staff.
*Due to allergies: no latex balloons
or peanut products are permitted on
campus. Thank you for your
understanding.
INFO FOR DELAY DAY
WEDNESDAYS
(First delay day is September
19th, school begins at 9:30)
The reason for our delayed start on Wednesday
morning’s is two fold:
It gives staff at DHS a chance to meet and
work on important issues such as school
improvement, curriculum, etc.…
It provides time for students to get extra
help from their teachers, to make up
quizzes, tests and assignments.
Teachers are available at 8:20 am, NO PASS IS
NEEDED.
If a student needs to be dropped off prior
to 8:20 am they can wait inside by the gym
doors (west entrance).
Students must enter through the west
doors, the north doors will be locked until
9:00 am.
Students who ride the early bus to school
are not permitted to leave campus. We
recently have had students leaving campus
on Wednesday mornings, which is
prohibited.

New Electronic Device Policy
Beginning this year, a new electronic device policy has
been established at DHS to help limit distractions in the
classroom. Numerous studies have recently been released
documenting the adverse effects smartphones are having
on the brains of young adults. Researchers have found that smartphones are
contributing to higher levels of stress and depression in teenagers. Furthermore, some
teenagers are developing addictions to their smartphones because of the burst of
dopamine that is released when they receive and view notifications from friends. What
ends up happening is that students are constantly checking and responding to messages,
which diminishes valuable instructional time.
To deter the negative effects of smartphones in the classroom, students are required to
keep their phones away and out of sight during the class period. Teachers have a
pocket system in place within their classroom, if a student is seen using their smartphone
during class they will be asked to place the phone in the pocket chart, or commonly called
the “cell phone hotel” for the remainder of the class period. Refusal to do so will result in
the confiscation of the phone which will then be given to administration. (see page 69 of
the student handbook for the Davison Community Schools cell phone policy)
Keep in mind that every classroom has a dial out telephone and emergencies can be
transferred from the main office. Additionally, students are allowed to access their
smartphones in the hallways during passing time and during lunch.
Please discuss this change in smartphone policy with your son or daughter. We have
included a list of links below describing the current research on the effects of
smartphones.
