Face-to-face teachers deliver most of the curricula

Teachers use online resources to supplement or remediate

Often in back of classroom or in lab

Iowa has emphasized supplemental programs for school districts, rather than a full-time online school.

Currently there are discussions underway to explore possible increases in online opportunities for students on a statewide level.

Online Efforts in Iowa

Page 11: Check out the Fleet

On a district level, there are online/blended opportunities occurring, but it is difficult to track all of these.

• The 1:1 laptop initiative is driving many of these local efforts. Estimates from Iowa State University predict that in the 2011-2012 school year, up to 100 of Iowa’s 350 school districts will have launched a 1:1 initiative.

On the statewide level, there are three major online initiatives:

– Iowa Learning Online– Kirkwood High School Distance Learning– Iowa AEA Efforts

• Works as a clearinghouse to help Iowa school districts expand learning opportunities for their high school students through general, Advanced Placement, and credit recovery courses delivered "at a distance" using technologies such as the Internet and interactive video classrooms connected to the Iowa Communications Network (ICN).

• Students enroll in ILO courses through their local school district. Each student is supported locally by a student coach—a school employee, such as a school counselor, teacher or paraprofessional.

Kirkwood HSDL has existed for over 30 years, and has been previously known as the high school correspondence program. • In 2003, the program launched an online physics course using Kirkwood’s e-learning platform with a self-developed course. • In 2007, Kirkwood HSDL purchased content from Apex learning to offer online courses. Currently, Kirkwood HSDL offers over 40 semester-length courses led by highly-qualified facilitators in a self-

paced flexible start format
