NURSING CODE OF ETHICS -the board in coordination with the accredited professional organization of nurses shall promulgate a code of ethics. -on October 23, 2003 , new nursing code of ethics was ratified by the National Assembly during the PNA Convention. _____THE NEW NURSING CODE OF ETHICS_____ NURSES AND PEOPLE __ETHICAL PRINCIPLES__ ..1. Values customs & spiritual beliefs held by the individual are to be respected. ..2. Individual freedom to make rational & and unconstrained decisions is to be respected. ..3. Personal information acquired in the process of giving nursing care shall be held in strict confidence. __NURSES MUST__ ..1. Consider the individuality and totality of clients when administering care. ..2. Respect the spiritual beliefs & practices clients regarding diet & treatment. ..3. Uphold the rights of the individuals. ..4. Take into considerations the culture and values of the client in providing nursing care however in the event of conflicts, the client’s welfare & safety must take precedence. NURSES & PRACTICE __ETHICAL PRINCIPLES__ ..1. Human life is inviolable ..2. Quality and excellence in the care of the client are the goals of nursing practice. ..3. The hallmark of accurate documentation of actions & actions & outcomes of delivered care is nursing accountability. ..4. Nurses are the advocates of the client. They take appropriate steps to safeguard the patient’s rights and privileges. __NURSES MUST__ …..a. Respect the patient’s bill of rights in the delivery of nursing care. …..b. Provide the patient’s or their families with all the pertinent information except those which may be deemed harmful to their well-being. …..c. Uphold the patient’s rights when conflicts arises regarding management of their care. ..5. Nurses are aware that their actions have professional, ethical, moral &legal dimensions. They strive to perform their work in the best interest of all concerned. …..a. Quality nursing care meets the optimum standard of safe nursing practice. …..b. Modification of practice shall consider the principles of nursing practice. …..c. Nurses in position of authority normally & legally responsible for devising a system of minimizing occurrences of ineffective & unlawful nursing practice. ..6. Nurses ensure that the client’s records are available only to those who are professionally & directly involved in their care when required by law. NURSES & CO-WORKERS __ETHICAL PRINCIPLES__ ..1. The nurse is in solidarity with the other members of the health care team in working for the client’s best interest. ..2. The nurse maintains collegial and collaborative working relationship with colleagues and other health care providers. __NURSES MUST__ ..1. Maintain the professional role/identity while working with other members ot the health care team. ..2. conform to group activities as those of health care team should be based on acceptable ethico-legal standards. ..3.
