1. Kick-Start Your Day with Positive Affirmations What you focus on expands, so pay attention to the positive right from the start! Have you ever woken up late, got anxious and panicked and then felt like nothing good happened the rest of the day? This is likely because you started out the day with a negative emotion. Instead of letting this dominate your day, start your day with positive affirmations. Talk to yourself, even if you feel silly, with statements like, “Today will be a good day” or “I’m going to be awesome today.”

2. Focus on the Positive, No Matter How Small Almost without fail we are going to experience negative events during our days —there’s no such thing as a perfect day. When this happens, try to focus on the benefits, no matter how slight or unimportant they seem.

3. Set Boundaries You cannot get your priority work done if you are in a constant state of reaction.

You have to protect your priority work time by blocking out your diary, turning off your phone and closing down your email. And, probably most important: you have to protect your creative energy for these tasks by avoiding the office “Negative “Nelly’s”

4. Take Ownership Over Your Attitude Your attitude owns you if you do not own it! Learn to interrupt those moments of quiet “disquiet” and replace them with the courage to take action in spite of your negative feelings.

5. Turn Failures into Lessons You aren’t perfect. You’re going to make mistakes and experience failure in multiple contexts, at multiple jobs and with multiple people. Instead of focusing on how you failed, think about what you’re going to do next time. Jackie Joyner-Kersee, a track and field athlete and Olympic gold medalist says it perfectly: 'I derive just as much happiness from the process as from the results. I don't mind losing as long as I see improvement...If I lose, I just back to the track and work some more'.

6. Embrace Your Imperfections Learning to acknowledge and embrace your imperfections will allow you to move forward rather than staying stuck. Hiding from your growth opportunities means you’ll never overcome them.

7. Learn to Reframe Criticism as Something Positive You will learn much more from constructive criticism than praise. So, dig deep to find the lessons in other’s feedback. Stop assuming that “room for improvement” translates as “failure”.

8. Change Your Perspective Creating a revitalised mindset means learning to take a step back and in order to see things from different perspectives. Learn more here

9. Make Time for Mistakes Learning something quickly does not necessarily mean that you have also learnt it well. Learning something ‘properly’ sometimes takes longer and you need to make time for your mistakes to happen.

10. Make Challenges Your New Best Friend Life is a bit like climbing a mountain: in order to climb a mountain, you must be prepared and ready to overcome a myriad of challenges in order to get to the top. Along the way you may risk your life, but it’s all about learning to take positive action time and time again. No matter how far you may fall, you have to continue to get back up. Resilience, agility and achieving your goals are just some of your rewards

11. Learn to Value the Experience Rather than the Result You have heard the term, “life is a journey enjoy the ride” Learning to value the experience in every new situation will allow us to enjoy the journey so much more. So often we think we have to be the best in a specific area and in the process of trying to hit goals, deadlines and be the best, we burn out and lose our passion for the process. If you focus on the experience rather than the end result, you will have a lot more fun and you might, unwittingly, find something which you are actually good at – even if that’s not the point.

12. Allow Yourself to Dream Every new adventure, or achievement, begins with a dream. Allow yourself to dream. Do not place limitations on these dreams. Your dreams are part of your creative self. If you embrace them, you will identify new opportunities for growth. When you identify these opportunities, try them out.

13. Deconstruct Everything Often, success is random. If you achieve success, it may not only be due to your brilliance – it could also be because the surrounding environment, people, resources were available to make your achievement possible. Equally, if you fail at something, it may not be due entirely to you: consider your environment, people, and resources. Always be asking questions to reflect and learn from your experience, whether they are good or bad.

14. Get your Giggle On For the past 40 years, good, hearty laughter has received high praise in the medical field by many experts regarding the numerous other effects it can have on humans such as:

1. Relieve tension and stress; 2. Boost the immune system: by reducing stress hormones and increasing activity among

immune cells and antibodies; 3. Reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke,

4. Triggering the brain’s emotional and reward centers spurs the release of dopamine, helping the brain to process emotional responses and enhancing our experience of pleasure; of serotonin, to buoy our mood; and of endorphins, to regulate our pain and stress and to induce euphoria

These are just a tiny few ways that laughing can really help your health mentally and physically Allow yourself to experience humour in even the darkest or most trying situations. Remind yourself that this situation will probably make for a good story later and try to crack a joke about it.

15. Focus on the Present Right now. Not today, not this hour, this exact moment. You might be having an argument with your spouse, but what in this exact moment is happening that’s so bad? Most sources of negativity stem from a memory of a recent event or the exaggerated imagination of a potential future event. Stay in the present moment – you’ve got this!

16. Stop Seeking Approval and Recognition Constantly seeking confirmation and recognition from others is not good for you. Learn rather to recognise and praise your own worth and successes as they happen, within you.

17. Surround Yourself with Positive Friends, Mentors and Colleagues Just as laughter builds your resilience to negative situations, when you surround yourself with positive people, you cannot help but be positively impacted: you’ll hear positive outlooks, positive stories and positive affirmations. Their positive words will affect your own thinking, which then affects your decisions, behaviours and results. Do what you can to improve the positivity of others, and let their positivity affect you the same way. As you might imagine, positive thinking offers compounding returns, so the more often you practice it, the greater benefits you’ll realise.

18. Find Inspiration from Others Finding inspiration from people in your life who succeed, helps your brain convert a “It can’t be done” into a “Wow, it actually CAN be done!” Your genuine happiness and excitement for others contagiously attracts and returns success back to you.

19. Celebrate Success with Others If you truly appreciate growth, you’ll want to share your progress with others. This helps you define and savour your victory and provides the impetus for the next stage of the journey or the next goal you create. Success breeds success.

20. Learn from other people’s mistakes Life is far too short to make all of your own mistakes. And, although it’s not always wise to compare yourself to others, it is important to realise we all share the same weaknesses. If you consciously observe the mistakes you and others make, you will continue to develop and help those around you to develop as well.

21. Take Risks in the Company of Others Stop trying to save face all the time and just let yourself mess up now and then. It will make it easier for you to take risks in the future. It also gives other’s permission to fail themselves, allowing you to spread this good habit.

22. Grow Your Reach Look out for opportunities to reach out and have conversations with people, and groups, whom you might not have spent time with previously. Approach these conversations with an open mind and you will learn new things and have your own views challenged. This will help to revitalise your mind and stimulate your creativity and sense of adventure.

23. Transform Negative Self-Talk into Positive Self-Talk

Negative self-talk or “stinking thinking” as I like to call it, can creep up easily and is often hard to notice. You might think I’m so bad at this or I shouldn’t have tried that. But these thoughts turn into internalized feelings and start to cement your conceptions of yourself. When you catch yourself doing this, stop and replace those negative messages with positive ones.

24. Use the Phrase “Not Yet” In her book, “Mindset” by Carol Dweck, “not yet” is a favourite line she uses. She recommends using it every time you are not able to complete a task. That way you don’t feel as if you have failed, but instead are in the middle of a learning process.

25. Replace the Word “Fail” Instead with “Learning If you make a mistake or don’t achieve your goal, that doesn’t mean you have failed – it means you have learnt something. Failure is often the step before success and why a lot of people don’t ever achieve success.

26. Emphasise Growth Over Speed Learning fast isn’t the same as learning well. Learning well often requires allowing time for mistakes, reflection, discussion and tweaking.

27. Do What You Love

Successful people identify and work with their strengths. Strengths are the basis of success. The strengths you have are often those things you enjoy doing because you do them well. Well, your natural talent when you apply hard work and discipline to brings its just rewards. Even when faced with adversity and challenges, if you do what you love, you will have a greater tendency to stay on track and focused and do what it takes to get to the finish line.

28. Grit: Never Give Up Grit or tenacity is about not giving up, in the face of adversity and challenge. Developing grit is an essential ingredient in resilience. Develop your tenacity by journaling all the times you fail and don’t give up because this will give you strengths when you need it. Watch this talk by Angela Lee Duckworth People with that extra bit of determination will be more likely to seek approval from themselves rather than others.

29. Develop Discipline

You won’t achieve mindset mastery if you’re not prepared to work for it. Carve out time everyday to work on your mindset. Start with 2 – 14 minutes and then increase this as suits your lifestyle.

30. Practice Patience Pamela Slim, author of Escape from Cubicle Nation shares this story about patience: “My mother in law has taught me that Diné people (Navajos) have ceremonies for every part of life:

There are baby’s first laugh ceremonies and puberty ceremonies and seasonal ceremonies.

There are water ceremonies and lightening ceremonies and beauty way ceremonies.

In these sacred gatherings, conversation is slow and deliberate and unhurried. An elder can take an entire hour to share a teaching, or bless food before eating. I have watched elders see a young person squirm with impatience, then choose to talk slower and longer. They do this because they know that learning to settle down and develop patience is going to help young folks develop thoughtfulness, depth and wisdom.”

31. Embrace Curiosity

Act like a child does on a daily basis, live in wonderment and discover the beauty of life. Decide today, to continually focus on learning and growing. Begin by asking more questions and being more curious about everyone you meet, the journey they have been on and what they can teach you. For every person I have met, every experience I have had teaches me about the world, myself and others. It is one of the many delights within this world for the unquenchable thirst for knowledge helps me to move forward with undeniable gusto, unbounding love and provides the deepest sense of appreciation for those who have touched my

heart. - Angelina Zimmerman

32. Cultivate Self-Awareness While you can become fluent in another language, you will never feel more at home than when you are speaking your native tongue: Explore your voice. Listen to your intuition. Write down your thoughts. Develop your ideas. – Pamela Slim Where necessary, ask others for feedback such as your closest friends, family members, boss and colleagues as they can offer slightly different views and give you an overall perspective on what to focus on and areas for development.

33. Try One New Thing Everyday

If you commit to trying one new thing every day, you will have tried 365 new things in one year. The chances of finding something you like, enjoy or are good at are much higher. More importantly, you will quickly develop a personal growth mindset where you see challenges rather than problems, and you are unafraid to try new things. For inspiration, check out Matt Cutt’s talk, “Try something new for 30 days”

34. Every Time You Achieve a Goal, Set a New Goal You’ll never be done learning. Just because you graduated or finished a particular project, it doesn’t mean you can’t be interested in learning something else. Carol Dweck, author of “Mindset” says that people with a growth mindset constantly set themselves new goals, seek intellectual stimulation and try to broaden their knowledge. And from a brain health perspective, this helps minimise the chances of brain degeneration later in life.

35. Think Realistically about Time and Effort It takes time to learn. Don’t expect to master every topic under the sun in one sitting. It’s easy to quickly set goals without taking into account the effort that will be required to complete the individual steps. According to Dweck, you should view these two components realistically when learning.

36. Place effort before talent Hard work should always be rewarded before inherent skill. Hard work takes you outside of your comfort zone whilst inherent skill allows you to play safe.

37. Reward Small Wins Recognise and appreciate the small wins you make along your journey, this will allow your brain to experience success and keep motivated.

38. Leverage the Lesson of Brain Plasticity Your brain is able to constantly change itself based on the way you think and process your feelings. If you can learn to notice and name your thoughts and feelings, you can change your brain and mindset: the brain isn’t fixed; your mind shouldn’t be either.

39. Stop Justifying Everything

You do not need to justify everything that you do. When you adopt a new behaviour or hobby, your friends and family will ask you why you have done it. Remember that you do not need to offer any justification other than ‘because I want to!’

40. Keep Practising the Basics When we first learn a new skill, we tend to dive into it with abandon, taking classes, learning from mentors and practicing like crazy. When we reach a certain level of success, we often get lazy. To truly master this skill, you should never stop practicing the basics. When you don’t practice the basics, they go away.

41. Your Environment Matters

For the work you will do in your life, you will need to think about a space for where you will do this work. Regardless of the size or cost of your physical space, treat it with reverence and respect. Pay attention to what you bring into it. Take time to clean the floor and wash the windows. Regularly unclutter this space. Surround yourself with images of beauty and inspiration. Give gratitude to the tools that you use to do your work.

42. Always Think Ahead My mixed martial arts teacher Mr. Fiori always tells me to “punch through the bag” when I am practicing jabs and crosses. If you just focus on hitting the target itself, your punch will be weak. Set your target a foot behind the bag, and aim to hit that. The same applies to your work. How does today’s goal relate to tomorrow’s goal, and next year’s goal? How will your choices today affect your relatives in seven generations? Always think ahead. (Pamela Slim of Escape from Cubicle Nation)

43. Create New Compelling Beliefs

Create a set of new compelling beliefs to override your existing negative self-limiting beliefs.
