There is a shift in the aged care industry; with an increased focus on positive ageing and individual choice combined with evidence that lifestyle services can have a significant impact on resident health and wellbeing, Leisure and Health in an aged care environment is increasingly seen as a crucial contributor.

Aged Care providers including facilities, community organisations and retirement villages are starting to embrace this shift, rethinking their approach to activities and looking for imaginative ways to provide meaningful and varied activities that provide residents choice, improve and promote independence and provide enriching environments that align to resident’s personal goals.

According to the Centre of Cultural Diversity in Ageing, 'Leisure and Lifestyle programs’ addressing leisure programs and daily recreational activities is essential to maintaining the quality of life of care recipients. Appropriate activity programs help to bring joyful pleasure into the lives of care recipients as well as foster self-esteem and a sense of purpose and belonging.

These changes are exciting for the aged care industry and will only gain more and more momentum and increase demand as time goes on. The aged care sector is still growing and there are no signs of this sector slowing down. Equally as certain is the need for a greater respect for resident choice, individualised care, meaningful and varied activities and consideration for the physical as well as mental and emotional needs of our ageing population.

Be a part of the change!
