But it is not enough to progress as individuals while our friends and neighbors are left behind." -César Chávez To celebrate the legacy of César Chávez, BUSD invites all 2 nd -12 th grade students to participate in an essay contest! CONTEST RULES 1. The dates of the contest are from March 13 until April 10, 2013. 2. BUSD students in 2 nd to 12 th grade can participate in the contest. 3. You must submit a one-page essay in English or Spanish (whichever language you prefer) on the following topic: Cesar Chavez was considered a peacekeeper. One of his core values is non-violence with the purpose of empowering those who are discriminated against. Who are/is a peacekeeper/s in your community? 4. Please type or write your essay in a white sheet of paper (letter 8 1 2 x 11 in). 5. To celebrate the legacy of César Chávez, BUSD invites all 2nd -12th grade students to participate in an essay contest! CONTEST RULES 1. The dates of the contest are from March 13 until April 10, 2013. 2. BUSD students in 2nd to 12th grade can participate in the contest. 3. The deadline to receive essays will be 4 p.m. Wednesday April 10, 2013. 7. A jury integrated by BUSD, City of Berkeley and community representatives will review

the essays and choose the best essay for each grade level. 8. BUSD will announce the winners of each grade level the week of April 17, 2013. 9. Winners (accompanied by a parent/guardian) will be invited to a reception before the April 24th

School Board meeting, then awarded a certificate during the meeting. The student’s will also, be honored at a Berkeley City Council Meeting April 30, 2013.

"No basta enseñarle a nuestra juventud cómo salir adelante... para que logre sus anhelos, que se gane una buena vida, que consiga los bienes materiales que proporciona esta sociedad. Son válidas dichas metas. Pero no basta adelantarse cómo individuos mientras nuestros amigos y vecinos se quedan atrás."

Para celebrar el legado de César Chávez ¡el Distrito convida a todos los estudiantes de los grados 2o a 12o a participar en un concurso de ensayos! REGLAS DEL CONCURSO 1. Las fechas del concurso son del 13 de marzo hasta el 10 de abril de 2013. 2. Los alumnos del Distrito en los grados 2o a 12o pueden participar en el concurso. 3. Se tiene que entregar un ensayo de una página sea en inglés o en español (el idioma que prefieras) sobre el tema siguiente: César Chávez fue considerado un pacificador. Uno de sus principales valores es la no violencia con el propósito de capacitar a las personas que son discriminadas. Quien es/son pacificador/es en su comunidad y porque? 4. Por favor redacta tu ensayo a máquina o a mano en una hoja de papel blanco (tamaño carta 8 ½ x 11 pulg.) 5. Tu ensayo debe incluir los siguienets datos:

• Nombre y apellido • Grado • Escuela • Dirección y teléfono de la casa • Dirección electrónica

Berkeley, CA 94702 El plazo límite para recepción de los ensayos es el Miércoles 10 de abril, a las 4 p.m. 7. Un jurado constituido por miembros del Distrito, del Ayuntamiento y de representantes de la comunidad evaluará los ensayos y eligirá el mejor ensayo para cada grado. 8. El Distrito anunciará los premiados en cada grado la semana del 17 de abril de 2013. 9. Se convidará a los Premiados (acompañados por un padre/guardián) a una recepción precediendo

la reunión de la Mesa Directiva el 24 de abril, galardonándoles luego un certificado durante la reunión. Se honrará también a los alumnos en la reunión del Consejo Municipal de Berkeley el 30 de abril de 2013.
