Cooperation between local organizations has led to “bonus” gardens being added to this year’s Secret Gardens Tour offered by the Jamestown Audubon Society. The Saturday, June 30 event regularly features five “secret” gardens that require access to the gardeners’ property. Jamestown Renaissance Corporation (JRC) received funding from the Sheldon, Lenna and Chautauqua Region Community Foundations to put toward “GROW Jamestown” initiatives that promote gardening and neighborhood beautification. Peter Lombardi, Director of Neighborhood Initiatives for JRC, worked with Secret Gardens Tour organizer Merle Szydlo to create a self-guided walking tour of “GROW Jamestown” gardens visible from the street on the north side of Jamestown. The June meeting of the Chautauqua County Society of Artists featured Denise Snyder-Norberg, one of the resident artists. Ms. Snyder-Norberg presented a detailed lesson on how to prepare and paint on turkey feathers. The group in attendance was especially astounded by the amount of time and detail required to prepare the feather before paint was applied. Each month, a member

all provided three hours of hands on work with the skaters. Stick handling, shooting, and agility were just a few lessons practiced this morning. Current Ironmen players assisted the coaching staff on the ice this morning. Ironmen Defenseman, Steve Frangione practiced stick handling with the younger group. “It’s a lot of fun being on the ice teaching these kids the basics,” Frangione said. “These basics become the foundation for a good hockey player and that’s what we’re trying to make here; great hockey players.” The hockey school continues throughout the week. From 9:30-12 in the morning, the kids will be on the ice learning from Ironmen players and coaches. Being taught by veteran hockey players gives them the experience and skill they will need to continue in the sport. The Ironmen

coaching staff aims to use this opportunity to aid in the development of the Jamestown area youth hockey. There is a full schedule of camps being offered at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena this summer. Ironmen Goalie Coach, Seth Wolfe will be offering a pair of Goaltending Schools at the Jamestown Arena on July 6 – 10 and July 30 – August 3. McFall Brothers Hockey will also offer their annual Summer Hockey School from July 23 – 27. The Sher-Wood Hockey Academy will also put on a hockey clinic from August 13-17. The Jamestown Skating Club also offers a weekly Learn-to-Skate program for beginner skaters. Please contact the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena at 716-484-2624 for more information on any of these upcoming camps and clinics.

Ever since Jon Elder was a young boy, he always held a profound interest in photography; after being introduced to the magic of a darkroom, Elder’s insatiable lust for learning about the art of photography could not be sated until he himself became a master of the craft. And that is just what he did. This year marks Elder’s 24th year in business; in his studio, he often crafts a variety of photographs, such as portraits, or “people work” as he so fondly calls them, events such as weddings, landscapes and a mixture of artsy shots. Jon

Elder has two packages for wedding photos which range from $999.00 to $1695.00, with customizations available. He also has a variety of packages for general photographs starting at $104.95 up to $312.95. Jon Elder’s studio and craft are always changing to suit the needs of the times, so you will always be guaranteed unique and professional service from himself and his fellow photographers. Elder says that he is willing to ride the wave of technology and see where it will take him in the future. Located on 560 Fairmount Avenue in Jamestown, Tangle Wood Manor continues to provide a safe haven for the elderly and peace of mind for their loved ones. Residents can choose to live within the main building, or rent or buy a small cottage located just outside of it’s perimeter. Doug and Betsy Geiger chose to go with the latter option, and purchase a quaint, adorable cottage, while still enjoying all of the amenities that residents living on the main campus get to experience and enjoy. The Geigers enjoy the fact that they can continue all of their

usual hobbies without being hindered, as everything within the cottage and surrounding grounds is easily accessible. However, on the off chance that they may need assistance, they have the peace of mind that help will only be a small step away. Services such as transportation assistance, along with meal and medication monitoring are offered to all residents who call Tangle Wood Manor home. In addition to health related services the staff of Tangle Wood Manor, rated as 10/10 by Betsy Geiger, hosts fun activities such as picnics, cookouts, dances, fishing tournaments, and tea parties. With all of these different social occasions,

residents have an easy time making friends and developing wholesome relationships with everyone they interact with. As an ending note, after being asked how the Geigers liked their new home, Betsy fondly smiled and stated, “We just love it here.” There are still many other vacant cottages that are looking to be filled. If Tangle Wood Manor seems like the right place for you and your family, feel free to browse on their website at www.tanglewoodmanor.com, or give them a call at 716-483-2876 to have all of your questions answered by the friendly, competent, and professional staff.

Without question, members are devoted to their boats. Many are considered to be investments. People interested in the hobby can ask around to find out which boats are popular, which ones

We’ll have a Field of Dreams, an area in the park where people can sell their boats. Vendors will be setting up for Saturday’s show, with judging starting at around 10 o’clock.” The show continues to four. On Saturday night there’s a banquet for those registrants to see who has the highest point boat. Show Chairman Dave Wesp says last-minute registrations continue to

come in. “Another nice thing is that the Lawson Center will be open for the public to visit.” That’s the antique boat museum in Bemus Point near the Italian Fisherman, an old marina converted into a museum. “There are not only powerboats, but also sailboats and a history of steamboats. There are hydroplanes there, and we actually have an actual biplane hanging in the basement.” Wesp expects it to be a busy weekend, being the closest the show has even been to the Fourth of July. “It’s going to be interesting!”

available will be a whole lot of sand candles, and ceramic ash trays, remember “this is a juried show.” says Cristina Rausa, Executive Director for the alliance. Over 200 artists apply for the 144 exhibitor spaces. The competition for a space in the show is intense, and only the best of the best are chosen. The work exhibited is of such a high caliber that many artists elevate their media to the level of fine art. Some exhibitors come from as far away as Maine and California, and some others

have been in the show for twenty or thirty years. Each artist must be present at the show to interact with the public. On of the artists who’s work is clearly in the fine art category is Elizabeth Andrews. Her etchings spring from her experiences as a young girl, wife and mother. Many of her works have personal stories behind them. A seemingly unimportant event in her life can be the inspiration for a story, that she then translates to an image of ink on paper. She illustrates the story, then transfers the image to a copper or zinc plate. The plate is inked and high quality art paper is pressed against it, when removed the image has transferred to the paper. Ms. Andrews says, “The etched plate

is truly a labor of love and a medium that provides the texture and mysterious compliment to my poems, personal anecdotes and creative musings.” She will be showing several new pieces as well as previous limited edition prints. One of her popular works is I Love My Small Cheese. The idea for the work came out of something her mother said to her daughter, “It’s not what you serve, it’s how you serve it. Even if you only have a small piece of cheese, serve it on a silver platter and wear a gown.” Elizabeth’s daughter modeled for the work, and the sentiment rings true. The Art Alliance Crafts Fair at Chautauqua will bring a new dimension to the renowned institution, and furthermore you can take some of it home.

something to get everyone excited and in a good and playful mood.” Anderson said that he is excited to see the turnout of the Firecracker Run this year. “More and more people have been coming out to participate each year,” he said. “It’s great to see more families out enjoying the day.” Check in and registration for event will take place on the day of between 7 and 8:30 a.m. The 10 K, 2-mile run

My name is Sharon Saporito and I need your help!

To the world you may be just one person, but to one person, you just may be the world. Thank you from the Western New York Kidney Connection.

Hi, My name is Sharon Saporito and I am in need of a kidney due to PKD. I was currently preparing for my transplant when it was discovered that my blood had developed an antibody. I was devastated. The team then tested the remaining three donors and found they also were no longer compatible. I never thought I would be in this position since I had so much support from friends and family. I went from having four possible donors to none. It has been a heart breaking situation to say the least. I am in excellent health except for my kidneys. I am blood type B and could receive a kidney from a B or O blood type. An exchange, I am sure would be possible. Please contact me if you can be of help!
