A MESSAGE FROM CRAIG
Hello Members
Thank you everyone who attended the National Finals and the Futurity. Both events were
very successful. They can only be successful if they are patronised. A lot of effort went into
organising both events and to all of those who played a part, whether it be a big part or a
small, a huge thank you. Congratulations to Steve & Julie for winning the Futurity with your
beautiful mare Lace. Congratulations also to Mindy for winning our very first Snaffle Bit
Futurity.
The Snaffle Bit Futurity may not run next year. The thought is that we may have exhausted
our supply of horses that would be available. If you think you are eligible and have a horse
that is, tell us.
Council is in the process of securing a new venue for the National Finals. We have booked
the Macnab Domain, just north of Upokongaro on the Kaiwhaiki Road. Where is that you
say? Well it is 10km north of Wanganui off the Parapara Highway. We have booked it on
the understanding that we are to meet with the owners of the property and the cattle to
make sure we can all meet everyone’s needs. I’m sure we can as everyone is more than
keen to make it happen. We are also going to try and get the same caterers as we had at
the Futurity. I think everyone will agree they have been the best value for money that we
have ever had. If you want to look at what is available, you can google it “Macnab Domain”.
There is going to be a Judges Seminar at Grant & Wendy Mackie’s home on the 21st of July.
Even if you don’t want to judge a seminar like this will help you understand the judging
procedure. Thank you, Grant & Wendy, for making your home available for this to happen.
We have done away with a single councillor having the portfolio of Competitors Advocate.
If anyone needs advice or is worried about something, then every councillor is there to help.
It is nice to see two new colts coming into New Zealand. Congratulations to Richard &
Christine and Grant & Wendy. I certainly wish you both all the very best with them. With
foaling not far away, I hope no-one has any disappointment and all the very best to
everyone.

Congratulations HILLBILLY BOY for being inducted into the
HERITAGE HALL OF FAME HORSES
HILLBILLY BOY
Our special boy Billy was born on the 10th October 1999 out of our good quarter horse mare Olita
Belle by A Touch Of Hillbilly. HillBilly Boy (his show name) is a registered paint horse so Billy was not
really bred for cutting but at the time we thought we would train him and see what we had. What a
good decision that turned out to be. Billy has been such a wonderful horse to train show and just
have around.
Billy’s career as a cutting horse began at the 2003 futurity which was held at Isola in those years.
Billy continued to be shown in cutting every year until 2015. Billy was shown by Joel, Aimee, Julie
and Steve and not just in cutting.
The AQHA-NZ youth teams over the years would come to our place for lessons on how to ride a
cutting horse for the world cup cutting contests and Billy was the go to horse. He has been shown by
many youth and rookie riders over the years when a horse was needed to put someone on.
Billy was also extremely versatile and was shown successfully in western performance classes
particularly reining and trail, where he won many classes. Aimee showed him for a few seasons and
he was so kind with her. Steve and Joel showed him in many reinings with great success.
As mentioned above with Aimee, Billy was such an adaptable horse you could put anyone on him
from nervous beginner to an experienced rider, he would be lovely and gentle with beginning riders
and then with more experienced riders he would give them a superb ride as well.
We took Billy to the 2017 Equidays for the cutting demonstrations and to help turn back. Our first
night at Equidays Vicki Wilson arrived at the cutters campsite wanting to know if anyone had a horse
that would be suitable to use at the Cowboy Challenge. Billy got the vote so off he went the next
morning to be ridden by the American Judge Craig Cameron to demonstrate the Cowboy Challenge
course for the competitors. Billy had never seen let alone done any cowboy challenge courses and
the great little horse that he is he went over everything perfectly. This led to Hayley Holt from the
Crowd Goes Wild and now TV1 breakfast presenter to be filmed riding Billy around the Cowboy
Challenge Course. Hayley had a ball and Billy was awesome for her.
Billy was roped into turning back this last season as our usual turn back horse Buck, who incidentally
is Billy’s son was lame.
Billy is enjoying his retirement teaching our grandchildren to ride. Chloe in particular loves to make
him do spins; she says she is making Billy dance. Again Billy is so gentle and kind when the
grandchildren are riding him. We love him, he really is just one of those special horses (in our eyes
anyway.)

Judges Forum & Clinic
at Grant and Wendy Mackies home in Taupo on Saturday 21st July at 11am.
It will be taken by Grant and is open to all members. Grant has recently attended the Australian Judges Clinic which was run by the American Monitor Judge from the
Australian Futurity.
On the day there will be an optional NCHA Judges Test which will be informative for all concerned, followed by discussion on different aspects of judging. Please bring your rulebook as you can use it during the judges test. - You can download a copy
off the NZCHA website.
Please bring a POTLUCK LUNCH to share and allow at least 4 hours for the day.
