FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Dear CSO Friends,The 2015/16 season was all about transition. I served as Interim Executive Director from the time former Executive Director Molly Sasse French began her medical leave in November 2015 until I was promoted in March of this year. I received great support and goodwill from all of you as well as our Board, staff, and musicians. It has been an eye-opening experience with a steep learning curve. I have greatly enjoyed serving in this capacity and look forward to many more years to come.

Running a non-profit in today’s climate is a challenge. The biggest question I had when taking on this role was how could I ensure that the CSO can continue serving the Chattanooga community well into the future. I quickly realized that it isn’t a burden for me to take on alone. It is a collaborative effort between our donors, patrons, Board members, staff, musicians, and the community itself. It’s about having honest conversations with each other, having a road map by which to travel, and frankly, having the passion to bring classical and orchestral music into the lives of those we serve.

This annual report is a look at what occurred this past season. It’s also an opportunity to take what we’ve built and continue to expand upon it year after year. In 2015/16, we had the second highest season of subscription sales as well as total ticket sales in the past seven years (just

shy of 2014/15 sales). We had the highest revenue-generating Holiday program in history. Our Masterworks ticket revenue and attendance continue to climb every year. Donations continue to exceed expectations. We have more donors committing to multi-year pledges. We aren’t without our challenges. Our modest shortfall in the 2015/16 season can be attributed to one thing – the stock market. Our investments held no earnings for the season. Luckily, to date, it has recovered.

We have embarked on a 5-year strategic plan that involves Board, staff, musicians, and members of the community. We’re finding ways to better integrate our mission into the community, to expand our education and engagement initiatives, to create fiscal policies to help us with sustainability, and to expand our reputation as a welcoming and high quality regional orchestra that attracts the best and brightest musicians. You’ll soon begin to see and hear the difference as we move forward in these initiatives. Stay tuned!

Samantha Teter Executive Director

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear CSO Friends,The CSO continues to progress on all fronts: ticket sales are up, donations are up and our artistic quality continues to reach higher standards. During the 2015/16 season, the CSO exceeded series single ticket sales goals for Pops, Chamber, and Volkswagen. In addition, our special Disney-themed concert was a sell-out with over 70% of households in attendance being new to the CSO. Attracting new audiences is critical to our future success. Fundraising and special projects exceeded last season’s all-time record by more than 5%. In addition, a very smooth transition occurred as Samantha Teter took over as the new CSO Executive Director.

The CSO is not resting on its laurels. We are constantly challenging the status quo to find new and meaningful ways to make orchestral music accessible to all people in the Chattanooga area.

The CSO is very close to having a balanced budget. With your continued, generous financial support we will reach this goal and remain a leader in the Arts in Chattanooga for many years to come.

Sincerely,Don McDowell

Dear Friends,Thank you for joining us for the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera’s 2015/16 Season. The musical highlight of the season was the collaboration with world-renowned Soprano Renée Fleming performing various works, including Strauss’ Four Last Songs, that demonstrated her versatile style. Her voice and artistry were so stunningly beautiful, and it was definitely a night to remember!

The Barnett and Company Masterworks Series also had many highlights, including Respighi’s Pines of Rome, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Brahms’ Requiem with CSO and UTC Choruses, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 to name a few. We also welcomed exciting artists such as Pablo Villegas, Mela Dailey, Alexander Schimpf, Arnaud Sussmann, and Stanislav Khristenko.

Our First Tennessee Pops season, primarily conducted by Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt, featured a tribute to the music of Paul McCartney, Chattanooga’s own Seth Carico, and a fun evening of the best of sports-related music. Our Home for the Holidays concerts featured Scott Coulter and the Metropolitan Bells along with the CSO Chorus, and again our Big Band Fever concerts drew big crowds ready to dance to a concert featuring trumpeter extraordinaire and brilliant and fun entertainer Byron Stripling.

Thank you again for your support and love for the CSO, and I hope you enjoyed the 2015/16 Season as much as I did!

Sincerely,

Kayoko Dan Music Director

For more than 75 years, the CSO has been an important partner in music education in the greater Chattanooga area. As a result of a yearlong process examining current programs and talking with stakeholders, the CSO introduced several new programs in order to truly be a community resource.

Ensembles in Schools These short programs for kids introduce basic music concepts and the instruments of the orchestra. The CSO Wind and String Quintets performed this season for approximately 25,000 students in 61 schools in 12 counties. Approximately 30% of students were minority and 8% were differently abled students.

Young People’s Concerts Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Students who attended the CSO’s Young People’s Concert, Animal Tales, heard from a carnival of animals including Mancini’s The Pink Panther, Saint-Saen’s Carnival of the Animals, and Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf accompanied by dancers from the Center for Creative Arts. Featured on the concert were Leah Carroll, Alpine Crest Elementary School; Charlene Cook, East Ridge Elementary School; Dustin Dotzler, Wallace A. Smith Elementary, who conducted the CSO on Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee.

The 2015/16 Young People’s Concerts again beat their previous attendance records – 7,268 students and teachers from 68 schools and homeschool groups attended one of the performances.

MasterclassesGuest artists and guest composers gave 15 masterclasses and lectures during the season at Baylor School, Center for Creative Arts, Covenant College, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Lee University, Middle Tennessee State University, and the Chattanooga Girls’ Choir with nearly 500 students and adults attending.

Strings in SchoolsThanks to the support of the Fletcher Bright Fund for Strings, the CSO partnered with LOVE Fellowship Church, Glass House Collective, and Hardy Elementary to teach beginning string lessons to students over the summer and during the school year,

Associate Concertmaster Joshua Holritz taught a weekly group lesson and weekly individual lessons to several students for whom this was their first experience with a musical instrument. The Strings in Schools program was also active in Big Ridge Elementary School.

Instrument Introductions – NEWNew to the CSO roster of educational programs this season was “Instrument Introductions”. Through this program, music teachers had the opportunity to check out the CSO’s collection of petting zoo instruments for use in their classrooms as they teach about the instruments of the orchestra. Our violins, flutes, and trombones found their way into classrooms as far away as Athens, TN!

Music In Our Schools Month – NEW Each March, music teachers and music organizations celebrate “Music In Our Schools Month”, highlighting teachers, their programs, and the benefits of music education. The CSO kicked off our participation in this national celebration with an event on Read Across America Day on March 2. More than 30 volunteers went to local schools and read John Lithgow’s story of musical prodigy The Remarkable Farkle McBride. More than 100 copies of the book were given to area music teachers for use in their classrooms. Other events included a “Music Education Celebration” at our March Masterworks concert and an online website that spotlighted local teachers and their programs.

MUSIC EDUCATION

Page 8: CHATTANOOGA SYMPHONY & OPERA · 2020. 7. 25. · 4 Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us for the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera’s 2015/16 Season. The musical highlight of the season

This season marked the CSO Youth Orchestras’ 30th anniversary since their reformation. 203 students from 48 schools made up this season’s ensembles. The season opened with an instrument petting zoo and cupcakes as part of the city’s PARKing Day.

On September 10, the Youth Orchestras held their annual Concerto Competition. The Competition, for students in the highest ensemble, allows the winner the opportunity to perform at the Young People’s Concerts and at the Side by Side concert with the CSO. Hannah Eitzen, tuba, was named the winner and performed Edward Gregson’s Concerto for Tuba.

The Youth Orchestras presented five formal concerts, and participated again in the Chattanooga Boys Choir’s Singing Christmas Tree. The Spring Concert at the Tivoli Theatre on May 2 was a tour de force for Etude, Philharmonic, and Symphony, concluding with an alumni orchestra joining in for a final performance.

A highlight of the season was the joint CSO and CSOYO Side By Side concert. Giving students the chance to play alongside professional musicians provides invaluable musical education opportunities for the up-and-coming musicians. Featured in the program were the top two winners of the 2015 CSOYO Concerto Competition, Hannah Eitzen and Sasha Hitachi-Kizziah. Josh Holritz, CSO Associate Concertmaster and CSOYO alumnus, were also featured.

Out & AboutThe String and Wind Quintets performed in 28 different community locations including Erlanger and Memorial Hospitals, Warehouse Row, Chattanooga Housing Authority residences, local retirement homes, libraries, and other venues. These hour–long concerts appeal to a wide variety of people with classical and pops favorites.

Sensory Friendly ConcertsThe CSO renewed its commitment to serving all audiences and presented a three concert series designed especially for children with atypical developments such as Autism and Down Syndrome.

These sensory friendly concerts featured performances by our String and Wind Ensembles in a space that allowed for movement, interaction, or easy listening. Attendees were invited to sit close to the performers and move to the music as it moved them. Nearly 100 people attended these concerts, which at the end of the 2015/16 season received recognition and support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Spotlight TalksAfter hearing from many audience members of their desire to learn more about the music being performed on concerts, the CSO presented six spotlight talks before Barnett and Company Masterworks concerts. Choral expert Dr. Tómas Hernandez presented a standing room only talk on Brahms’ Requiem and local composer and former Met Opera Principal Trumpet, Douglas Hedwig, hosted pre-concert conversations with Concertmaster Holly Mulcahy.

There were many wonderful moments throughout the 2015/16 season. Renée Fleming wowed Chattanooga audiences with a spectacular night of music. Our quintets performed to more than 25,000 students in 61 schools. Our guest artists and composers gave 15 masterclasses at area schools and universities. We had the highest revenue-generating Holiday program in history, the second-highest number of subscribers in the past seven years, and performed to a sold-out crowd at our Disney in Concert production. We honored veterans at our annual Veteran’s Day concert and enjoyed each other’s company at many of our sponsored events throughout the season. Your participation in this organization makes a big impact in the Chattanooga community!
