STRIVE TO EXCEL

SPEED AND ENDURANCE ON SHOW

Students who are 8 or turning 8 this year had the opportunity to participate in our annual school

athletics carnival yesterday.

The weather was perfect for students to show their speed in the 100m event and endurance in

the 200m and 800m events. Excellent sportsmanship and many personal bests were a hallmark

of the day. Many students also enjoyed dressing in their sporting house colour to get into the

spirit of the day. There was much laughter at the novelty events.

shows empathy, compassion and love to two

homeless children. There are numerous rich texts

available through our school library and the local

town library that your chil-

dren would enjoy reading

and being read to. So, why

don’t you join the town li-

brary as a family, or visit the

school library, and browse

through the many, many

marvellous rich texts on the

shelves. Alison Clifton

RICH TEXTS READ IN OUR CLASSROOMS

What are rich texts? I hear you ask. Texts is a

word used to describe the many kinds of books

that teachers use with their students on a day to

day basis. Teachers read students rich texts for

enjoyment, for writing stimulus and to model good

reading strategies. What do these rich texts look

like? Sometimes the text can be books that have

well illustrated and detailed illustrations with limited

words on each page like ‘MY COUNTRY’

by Ezekiel Kwaymullina

& Sally Morgan.

(Year 1/2W are looking

at this text this week.)

Other texts can have a

captivating story line writ-

ten in very descriptive

language with very de-

tailed pictures, like in

‘FOX’ by Margaret Wild &

Ron Brooks.

Often a rich text will present problems that the

character will need to solve. The author will de-

scribe the consequences that come with decisions

that are made when solving a problem. A rich text

helps students learn to make sense of the world in

which they live and the people around them.

Teachers lead their students in whole class and

small group discussions about the words used by

the author and the illustrations drawn by the illus-

trator.

‘THE STONE LION’ by

Margaret Wild & Ritva

Voutila is another favour-

ite rich text. This book tells

the story of a Stone Lion

that comes to life. He

SOCCER GALA DAY

The girls soccer team represented Chatham

Public School last Friday at the PSSA Girls

Soccer Gala Day at the Wingham Sporting

Complex.

The girls all displayed great sportsmanship and

a big improvement in their soccer skills as the

day went on, all finishing with big smiles on

their faces.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN

A reminder to please ask for your ‘Earn and Learn’

stickers when you are at the Woolworths checkout.

They can be placed in the allocated box at our Ta-

ree Woolworths or the school office. These stickers

go towards the school gaining some great resources

for all of our students.

DEBATING TEAM UPDATE

Last Tuesday the Chatham Public School debating

team travelled to Wingham Brush Public School for

our first round debate of the Lower North Coast

NSW Primary School Debating competition.

The topic was; students shouldn't be contestants on

Reality TV shows. This was a tough topic to debate

for both teams. Chatham was required to argue

from the 'negative' position, therefore disagreeing

with this statement. The Adjudicator noted it was a

close contest but awarded the win to Wingham

Brush Public School. The Adjudicator gave all of the

participants some valuable feedback on their perfor-

mances both as individuals and as part of a team.

Chatham Public School students are fortunate to

participate in extra-curricular inter-school competi-

tions such as debating.

The Chatham team looks forward to contesting the

next round. Thank you to those students who have

expressed their interest to join the debating team

this year. There may be opportunities to include oth-

BARRY LOVES SCHOOL LIFE

We would like to introduce Barry, a guinea pig and

resident of Chatham Public School.

Barry lives in the Kinder area but regularly has visi-

tors from students throughout the whole school.

Pictured below are Hayleigh, O’Shay and Callan

giving Barry lots of attention.

REQUEST OF TISSUES

To assist with encouraging all students to practise

good hygiene methods, we ask if each student

could please provide a box of tissues for their class-

room. This will ensure each class has adequate

supplies for the upcoming cooler season.

WEARING OF HATS

Please ensure your child has a school bucket hat in

their bag each day they come to school. Students

love to play out on our grassed areas but cannot do

so if they do not have their school bucket hat for

sun protection.

SUCCESS AT ANNUAL EISTEDDFOD

Last Monday 3rd June 2019, students from Stage

One performed with pride at the Taree Eisteddfod.

Mrs Clifton and Mrs Pasierbek were very proud of

all the students. The Chatham Public

School junior bells group were awarded encour-

agement award ribbons and were asked up onto

the stage for a second time by the adjudicators,

who gave them wonderful praise. Well done to

Tish for all her hard work over the last few weeks

in order to prepare the students for their first per-

formance.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP IN DOE The department's Digital Citizenship website has

been completely updated and revamped! It's de-

signed to help students, staff and parents under-

stand and develop the attitude, skills, knowledge

and behaviours they need to actively participate in a

digital society. Focusing more on a positively framed

strategy, the aim is to equip and empower users to

minimise the risks and maximise the opportuni-

ties in our digital future. A toolkit is available

covering important concepts including:

Managing their privacy settings in social media

Collaborating online and avoiding scams and

hoaxes

Understanding the law when it comes to online

speech

Internet banking, shopping online and much

more

We encourage you have a look at the website and

share the concepts and strategies with your chil-

dren.

CAREGIVERS WHO HAVE A CHILD STARTING

KINDERGARTEN NEXT YEAR OR WHO KNOW

OF SOMEONE WHO DOES ……

Don’t forget to call in to our school’s office and

collect your enrolment pack and kindergarten

2020 transition t-shirt.

Pictured below is Archer wearing our kindergarten

2020 transition shirt. Archer was very excited to

receive his shirt with his enrolment pack.

HEADLICE

There has been evidence of head lice in our

school. Please check your child for head lice reg-

ularly. If they are present, please treat as per di-

rections. Treatment can be purchased at your lo-

cal pharmacy.

It would be appreciated if you could all regularly

check your child’s hair. If we all work together, we

can keep it to a minimum.

PARENTING TIP

MAKING PAYMENTS ONLINE

The Department of Education provide an online

payment portal linked to our school’s website to

make it easier for you to pay for school related pay-

ments. This is a secure payment page hosted by

Westpac.

Payments can be made for the voluntary school

contribution, excursions and other events that oc-

cur at our school. (payments for P&C and canteen

cannot be accepted online - this includes uni-

forms).

To make a payment online just go to our school

website (google Chatham Public School) and click

on “make a payment” (appears along the top on

the homepage). Follow the prompts to make the

EFTPOS available for

your convenience.

Fundamental Movement skills

There is evidence that children

with poor fundamental move-

ment skills such as jumping,

skipping, leaping, kicking,

throwing and catching are less

likely to be active. Give your

kids a head start and teach

places available. Contact Murray on 0427

186 734 or visit sportnsw.com.au/events to

register.

Eventbrite - FREE workshop intervention to

assist families, foster families, carers and

friends to assist them to stay connected when

emotions run high. Tuesday 23/7/19. 9am to

2.45pm. At the Manning Valley Visitor Infor-

mation Centrre, Morning tea & lunch provid-

ed. Registration essential as places limited.

SLEEP IS IMPORTANT

Sleep is very important for your child’s wellbeing.

Screentime can have an impact on their sleep rou-

tine. Go to https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-

resources/iparent for useful information for parents

regarding screentime and how to stay safe online.

Listed below are also recommendations for sleep

times for children from 4 months of age.

LABELLING OF CLOTHING

We urge all parents/caregivers to please label all of

their children’s clothing. As we move into the cooler

months, many jumpers have already been handed

to lost property without a name. If students clothing

is labelled, this then allows the school to return the

lost items to their rightful owner.
