G ood evening and welcome to Mossie Park for our first home game of the brand

new season in the North West Counties Premier Division.

I'd like to extend the welcome to officials, players and supporters of visitors from Barnoldswick Town. On behalf of myself and Charnock Richard FC, I hope you have a pleasant stay during the game, and a safe journey home aftwerwards.

After an impressive pre-season, we played Rylands in our first game on Saturday, although it was a feisty game which had a lot of action, it was disappointing to start on the losing side by the odd goal in five.

Tonight will be a tougher affair than our meetings from last season which resulted in a 7-0 aggregate scoreline, as 'Barlick's' signings have been remarkable. One of which being former Green Joe Noblet, who was held in high regard during his time here.

Of course, there's no doubt we'll all get behind the Greens on and off the pitch this season, and we look forward to what this season has in store for us.

On a seperate note, since my last editorial, our fixtures were released. Further to this, if we have any avid ramblers and trekkers (not the Star variety!) amongst us, I will be organising a sponsored walk to Burscough FC at the beginning of October. This hopefully will raise vital funds for the football club, but at the moment it is in it's initial stages and more details will be released in the coming weeks. All will be welcome to join in, and as it's only 9 miles it's very 'doable'.

That's all from me until our next game this Saturday in the FA Cup.

Enjoy the game!

Ian Livesey, Programme Co-ordinator

G ood evening and welcome to our first home game at Mossie Park and welcome to our visitors from

Barnoldswick Town FC. Hope you have a safe journey back to East Lancashire later tonight.

Saturdays game was a proud moment for myself and also my family. To manage my boyhood club at North West Counties level was a massive honour.

The result wasn’t what we wanted. There had been a lot of hype around Rylands before the game which I found strange, to back a side that has just been promoted and didn’t play much football. It’s going to be tough for teams going there on a bad surface and intimidating atmosphere.

I felt a draw would have been a fair result for us, but it cost us by not taking our early chances and switching off in the second half.

I’d like to thank of supporters who travelled and the majority were positive throughout the game.

We move on to tonight’s game against Barnoldswick where we look to get our first three points on the board. It’s not going to be an easy fixture but we most definitely have enough to take all the points.

G ood evening and welcome to Mossie Park for our first NWCFL Premier Division home fixture of the

2019/20 season. On behalf of everyone here at Charnock Richard FC, I would like to welcome the players, club officials and supporters of tonight’s opponents Barnoldswick Town FC. We hope that you all have a very enjoyable stay at our club and have a safe journey back home to East Lancashire.

It has been a rather hectic pre-season period over the past few weeks, with six first team and five reserve team fixtures being played during the month of July. We always stress that results are not that important in these friendly games but we can be satisfied that both teams have shown some encouraging form throughout the majority of the pre-season period. For me, the standout game for the first team came against Lancaster City where we recovered from an early two goal deficit to come out comfortable 4-2 winners in the end against a team which play in two divisions higher than ourselves. The final pre-season game away at Silsden was another excellent performance which gave us a good platform to work from, as we headed into our league programme starting in early August.

Our first league game on Saturday away at Rylands looked tough on paper and indeed it turned out to be that, as we took on the newly promoted team from Warrington who won the First Division South Championship last season. They are a big strong outfit who clearly should not have any problems surviving at this level based on what we saw on Saturday. Unfortunately, we missed some excellent chances in the first half and really should have gone in at least one or two goals up at half time rather than the 1-1 scoreline. However, we were severely punished following a poor second half performance where we just didn’t get going until we were 3-1 down with the game virtually out of our reach. In the end, they took their

chances well and deserved the three points, so we will need to put that performance behind us and show a positive reaction in tonight’s game.

We have a good record against tonight’s opponents but we know that they have strengthened in the off-season with some good signings including Joe Noblett who left us in the closed season. They started their campaign on Saturday with a tough looking opening fixture at home to Congleton Town and came out with a creditable 3-3 draw against one of the teams expected to be challenging strongly for promotion this season. No doubt we will need to perform close to our best if we are to get something out of tonight’s game.

The reserves started their league campaign on Saturday with an excellent 2-0 win at Storeys of Lancaster, who are one of six new teams to have joined the West Lancashire League for the start of the 2019/20 season. The new teams have boosted the numbers in Division 2 to sixteen teams and therefore our reserves will have a more normal 30 fixtures to play this coming season. For those of you who watch our reserves, once again, there will not be any admission charges for reserve fixtures at Mossie Park but we have requested by some supporters to introduce a ‘gratuity box’ where anyone can make a small donation to the club which can help us towards the costs of hosting our reserves games. e.g. Match Official cost and post-match food etc. The ‘gratuity box’ will be located immediately to the left of the entrance gate during reserve matches and any financial support given would be very much appreciated.

That’s all from me for now but please get behind the new management teams and players ahead of what will hopefully be another strong season for the club. As always, please enjoy tonight’s game and we look forward to seeing you all here again at Mossie Park for next Saturday’s FA Cup match at home to Lower Breck.

06 THE OFFICIAL CHARNOCK RICHARD FOOTBALL CLUB PROGRAMME

FROM THE CHAIRMAN SHAUN TOOTELL

THE BOARDROOM SHAUN TOOTELL

Good afternoon and welcome to Mossie Park for thisthird home league game of the season for CharnockRichard FC in the Hallmark Security League. On behalfof everyone here at Charnock Richard, I would like towelcome the management, players and committeefrom St Helens Town. We hope you all have a veryenjoyable day at our club and have a safe journeyback home.

Our first ever home league game two weeks ago againstAlsager Town was a bit of a wake-up call for us all andshowed everyone that we can expect to face some verydifficult opponents in this league. It is however veryencouraging that as I write this article, the team has sincebounced back with two excellent away wins at Silsden andWhitchurch Alport. We were advised by the league thatone of the management committee would be present at ourfirst home game to offer advice and support on the day andit was the league Ground Grading Chairman GeoffWilkinson who visited us on the day. Geoff is very wellknown to us all here at Charnock and has been offering theclub valuable advice on ground grading matters over anumber of years. It is fair to say that Geoff’s advice hashelped to save the club a lot of money which could havebeen spent unwisely as we developed the Mossie Parkfacility.

On the day, Geoff took the opportunity to update us on ourcurrent Ground Grading status. For those who are notfamiliar with the grading standards, grounds must initiallymeet the FA Grading Standard H to gain promotion into theNorth West Counties League. Following admission into theleague, all clubs must then meet Grading Standard G bythe 31st March in the following year (in our case 31stMarch 2017). The difference between Grade G and H isvery minimal - Grade H requires a minimum coveredspectator accommodation of 50, whereas Grade Grequires a minimum covered spectator accommodation of100 (of which 50 must be seated and located in onestand). Both Grading Standards state ‘All seating mustafford a good view of the pitch’ and whilst our currentseated stand holds just over 100 seats, only the higher 50seats meet this criteria due to the potential for standingspectators along the touchlines blocking the views from thelower seats. It is fair to say that we have visited othergrounds recently and the same argument could be raisedas to whether some ground level seating at other venuesafford a good view of the pitch but we will leave that forothers to debate.

At the end of the day we have a responsibility to complywith the Ground Grading Regulations, so we have apredicament which must be resolved within the next sixmonths. One option would be to raise the height of thecurrent stand to ensure all that all 100 plus seats afford agood view of the pitch - not an easy option but notimpossible. A second option would be to build a coveredstanding area to accommodate 50 or 100 spectators sothat we can meet the Grade G requirements. Theseissues will be discussed at the next committee meetingwhich will be held in a few days’ time and hopefully wewill agree our preferred strategy going forward. Oneissue we mustn’t forget is that should we be the fortunateposition to challenge for promotion to the PremierDivision next season, then the ground must the meet therequirements of Grade F which will almost certainlyrequire us to raise the height of the stand to allow all 100plus seats to give a good view of the pitch.

On a final note I would like to thank many of you whoattended our recent Reserve league game at home toWorkington Reserves. Not only did we get an excellentattendance on a Monday evening but it is fair to say thatit was a superb game of football played by two excellentyoung sides who were both a credit to the game. I lostcount of how many spectators came up to me after thematch to say that they had thoroughly enjoyed the game.

That’s enough from me for the time being, so pleaseenjoy your day and hopefully we can look forward toseeing you again at Mossie Park as the seasonprogresses.

W elcome to Mossie Park for our first home game of the 2019-20 campaign and a huge Charnock

welcome to our friends from the east side of the county, Barnoldswick Town. We hope that the ‘Barlick’ contingent, including their players, club officials and supporters will enjoy their stay with us and have a safe and trouble-free journey home later on tonight. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to our three match officials; referee, Joseph Johnson and his two able assistants Paul Ellis and Josh Smith.

‘Barlick’ tailed off a little at the run-in towards the back end of last season, after looking a likely challenger amongst the top grouping in the Premier Division for a good part of the campaign. In the end the east Lancashire side had to be content with a mid-table finish of 11th place. There is little doubt that they will be determined to improve on that showing this time around. The East Lancashire side, or is it the West Riding of Yorkshire side?, came here twelve months ago, almost to the day, to open the 2018-19 campaign at Mossie Park on the 4th August 2018.

Our pre-season games, for both first and second teams, proved to be excellent preparation for the coming season and we are delighted with the quality and commitment shown by the players. This, of course doesn’t guarantee anything, but we could not have done more in getting ready, for what promises to be quite a competitive season in the North West Counties League Premier Division. All we ask for is support for our ‘new’ managers, Ryan and his first team ‘entourage’ along with Ian and his management team in the reserves. The West Lancashire League Division 2 will also be more competitive this time around due to an influx of new clubs, and here again the quality of opposition will be considerably increased. We wish everyone well as we meet the invariably tough challenges ahead of us.

Our new Reserve team boss is Ian Mountain who was previously with my former club Bamber Bridge and more recently at West Lancashire League side, Stoneclough. Ian has put in a good deal of work over the summer. As well as remodelling the training schedule, he has made one or two changes to the second team squad.

Likewise, Ryan has made considerable changes to the training schedule for the first team and has been very busy since the last ball was kicked in the Premier Division back on the 27th April. We are delighted to record that nearly all of our first team

squad from last term has returned to the colours for the new season and some quality additions have been made. We would like to place on record our many thanks to the players who have moved on, including Troy Carsley who has joined Longridge Town and Joe Noblet who has joined today’s visitors Barnoldswick Town. We wish them well for the future.

Joining us is experienced mid-fielder, Richard Ainscough. Bolton lad Richard has gained a wealth of experience since leaving Blackburn Rovers at the age of 18. Indeed, Rick has enjoyed spells in America, Canada, Finland and Gibraltar. Whilst in Finland he turned out for PEPO Lappeenranta before moving to Gibraltar Division 2 side Bruno’s Magpies for a short spell. On returning to England Richard joined Yorkshire side Silsden for a short time before transferring to Padiham in January 2019. He became a Charnock Richard player at the start of the 2019-20 season. Ben Ascroft (Goalkeeper) Billinge lad Ben Ascroft started his football career at Blackburn Rovers in 2016 before signing for Northern Premier League side Warrington Town on his release at the start of the 2017-18 campaign. Ben then joined City Of Liverpool in March 2018 and was a member of the ‘Purps’ North West Counties League Premier Division title winning side that season. He joined Charnock Richard in the summer of 2019. Returning to the colours is Jack Bennett (Midfield) Jack came through the ranks at Mossie Park and was a prominent member of the successful Charnock Richard reserve side that won the West Lancashire League Reserve Division 1 championship and Houston Cup in 2013-14. Jack made his first team debut for Charnock Richard on the 17th August 2013 in the Premier Division of the West Lancashire League at Eagley. However, he moved on to near neighbours Euxton Villa where he enjoyed a few years; becoming team captain. He had a brief sojourn at Longridge Town before moving on to Garstang on the 12th November 2018. Jack re-joined Charnock Richard for the start of the 2019-20 campaign. We also welcome Lewis Haydock (Midfield) Lewis started his football career at Bury before joining the Northern Premier League side Hyde United in November 2016. He joined Abbey Hey in September 2017 before moving to Charnock Richard at the start of the 2019-20 campaign. We hope that our recent signings will enjoy their football with us and have a long and happy association with Charnock Richard.

Please note that if Saturday’s FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie at home to Lower Breck ends in a draw the replay will take place at Anfield Sports Community Centre on Thursday the 15th August; kick-off time is 7.45pm. Dave Rowland, Secretary

SECRETARY'S REPORT DAVE ROWLAND

SECRETARY’S REPORT DAVE ROWLAND

Welcome to Mossie Park for this afternoon’s DivisionOne game against Sandbach United who are visitingus for the very first time and a warm Charnock welcome to all who have travelled up from deepestCheshire to be with us today. We hope that you willenjoy your stay and have a safe and trouble-free journey home after the game. The East Cheshire sideare a friendly and welcoming club as we found outwhen visiting them on that ill-fated fog-bound afternoon at the end of November. It is hoped that wecan return their excellent hospitality today.

I first met United’s secretary, John Clayton, and a coupleof their committee, at the Imperial Hotel on the NorthPromenade in Blackpool when attending the North WestCounties League AGM back on the 11th June. Applicantclubs were asked to remain outside of the meeting untilbeing summoned by League Chairman Paul Lawler whenthe representatives from each of the six applicants werecalled upon to give an introductory speech to the assembled throng before being voted in by the memberclubs. As we waited nervously in an adjacent room, SteveMawdesley and I got into conversation with the Sandbachcontingent and quickly found them to be a very sociablegroup. We got on with them immediately and it was andenjoyable exchange. That day we made our first friends inthe North West Counties League and long may it continue.

Sandbach United are one of the six newcomers to theNorth West Counties League this season and spent theprevious campaign at Step 7 in the Cheshire Leaguewhere they finished in 4th spot in the Premier Division.Like most of the newly promoted clubs they have made agood impression in their first season in the competitionand we wish them well. Today is of course our last homegame of the season not withstanding any play-off gamethat we may be involved in. To say that it has been a special one would be an understatement. We have enjoyed some wonderful football, been to many differentvenues for the first time, met some really great people andmade many new friends. When we left our comfort zone inthe West Lancashire League, we did so because the clubhad grown and developed to a point where new challenges and new horizons had become a necessity.

A new direction was needed if the club was to grow. Remaining stagnant was not an option. We have hadproblems to contend with. Finding funding for essentialground development and finding an appropriate level forour reserve side was only a couple of examples. The immediate aim was to consolidate at Step 6 level in theNational League System and to be in a position to sustain this in the long term. The players of our threesenior teams have had a fine season and once again thishas been due to the management skills and dedication ofthe management teams of all three. On the administration side, we have been joined by David Smithand Brian Lowe who have very kindly agreed to give oftheir precious time and for this we are very grateful.

For me, this is my fifth season as secretary and I canhonestly say, hand on heart, that the 2016-17 campaignis one of the best that I have enjoyed in football. At timesit has been hard graft and there are many individualswho have put in a good deal of that this term, literally. It isthe combined efforts of you all that make this, such aspecial football club and such a wonderful place to be.Of course, we do not know just how things will pan out asafter today. Indeed, we have three very difficult awaygames to negotiate. Whether we are in the play-offs ornot is anybody’s guess but it is a sign of the success thatwe have enjoyed, when we are still talking about wherewe will finish amongst the top group at this stage of affairs. Whatever occurs, well done one and all.

The club was founded as Barnoldswick United (1972) at a meeting of two pre-existing clubs,

Bethesda F.C. And Barnoldswick Sports Club F.C. Which was held in the Cross Keys in Barnoldswick on Tuesday 28th June 1972. Brian (Bill) Bowditch who had been instrumental in organising the merger became club secretary.

Two teams were entered in to the Craven Football League and the first ever game was played on Saturday 16th September 1972.

The next major landmark in the club's history came in 1983 when Bill Bowditch, ably supported by civil engineer and player Ian Nutter had plans approved to lease their own ground from Pendle Borough Council. The first turf was cut by The Mayor of Pendle (Peggy Heaton) in September 1983. The first game was played on the new pitch on Saturday 19th October 1985 following extensive improvements which transformed the field in to a proper sports facility. This has been the home of Barnoldswick Town ever since.

New facilities and unbridled ambition led to calls for the club to start to progress through the leagues and entry in to the recently formed East Lancashire Football League was secured for the 1986-87 season.

The honours continued to be amassed and the club's ambitions grew with them. This resulted in another progression in to The West Lancashire Football League in season 1997-98. It was during this spell and at the start of the 2003-04 season that the decision was made to change the club's

name to Barnoldswick Town F.C. The name change was deemed necessary when the club took on the lease which included the pitch and changing rooms of Barnoldswick Park Rovers a club with a proud history and multiple honours particularly in the 1950's and 60's. Ironically the founder of Barnoldswick United (Brian Bowditch) was also one of the founders of Park Rovers as well as being a distinguished player for them during their halcyon period.

The amalgamation of clubs resulted indirectly in the formation of Barnoldswick Town Junior Football Club and the old Park Rovers pitch and adjacent facilities are still the headquarters for the junior section to this day.

Ground improvements continued throughout the whole period of the club's development and culminated in a succesful application to join The North West Counties Football League in season 2009-10.

The current 2018-19 season sees Barnoldswick Town under the careful stewardship of Chairman Stewart Airdrie and his dedicated band of committee members and volunteers fielding more teams than ever before.

They are represented by an excellent NWCFL team currently riding high in the premier division under the management of Matt Barnes and his team. Two amateur teams in The East Lancashire League and a thriving junior section make up the overall structure of the club with teams at every age group from under 7 to under 18. This provides an opportunity for children as

T he opening day of the 2019/20 season went off without a hitch on Saturday afternoon with over 3,500

fans up and down the NWCFL turning out.

Arguably one of the biggest games in the NWCFL top flight was at the Vestacare Stadium as last seasons First Division North two promoted sides Avro and Longridge Town went head-to-head. Michael Shenton had given the home side the lead just after the break, but two goals in ten minutes for Longridge from Paul Turner and Samuel Maddox turned the tie on its head to gift Lee Ashcroft’s side the win. Fellow promoted side Rylands (winners of the NWCFL First Division South last season), also managed to claim all three points as they mounted a 3-2 victory over last season’s 6th placed Charnock Richard. Rylands led after fifteen minutes, only for Carl Grisham to equalise on twenty-eight minutes. Then two quick goals for Rylands looked set to have clinched the points but a late goal set-up a grandstand finish, however, Rylands held on for the three points. Elsewhere, 1874 Northwich ran out comfortable 4-1 winners over Padiham to claim the top spot on goal difference. Four different scorers on the day will please managers, Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison, as they look to better their mid-table finish last season. Runcorn Town and Whitchurch Alport were the other winners of the day, with wins over Squires Gate (2-1), and Northwich Victoria (1-0) respectively. Runcorn raced into a two-goal lead with a Joe Holt and Craig Cairns finish mid-way through the second-half; Squires scored with eight minutes to go but Runcorn held out for the maximum points. Over in Wincham Park, fans of both sides were fumbling for their car keys seconds before the end, when Sean Griffiths netted a 93rd-minute winner much to the delight of visiting manager Luke Goddard. Winsford United ran out 3-1 winners away at Burscough, after initially falling behind in the first minute as Sam Turnbull netted the first NWCFL goal of the season. An Own Goal, and a Daniel Thomas and Kyle McGongie strike turned the game around for Lee Duckworth's side.

There were four score draws which rounded off an entertaining afternoon. Skelmersdale United came from behind twice away at Ashton Athletic as John Kearney netted the 92nd-minute equaliser as the game ended two a-piece. At the Silent Night Stadium, the 141 spectators were treated to a superbly entertaining matchup as Barnoldswick Town and Congleton Town shared a 6-goal thriller. Initially, Barnoldswick led through Joseph Noblet, but a brace from Emini Abegbengo turned the tie on its head. However, Barnoldswick came back to level mid-way through the second half, only for Congleton to take the lead once more with a Jordan Lorde finish. The scoring was complete seven minutes from time when Ashley Brierley slotted home. Last season’s runners up Bootle looked like they were heading for a single-goal victory through a Carl Peers first-half goal but Hanley Town huffed and puffed and eventually got a late, late 93rd-minute equaliser as they ended the day thirteenth and fourteenth in the standings respectively. And lastly, Irlam and Litherland Remyca battled out a 2-2 draw, with two penalties, one for either side within seconds of each other rounding off an enthralling game. In the First Division North section, three new sides were all in action as Golcar United, Pilkington and Emley AFC were all raring and ready to go at 3:00 pm. However, only one of the three new sides in Golcar managed to claim all three points with a narrow 2-1 victory over last seasons fifth-placed Prestwich Heys. Ben Burnett put Golcar in front, only for Heys to equalise when Will Shawcross netted. Alex Hallam, did, however, net moments before the break which sealed the win for one of the new boys on the block. Pilkington and Emley did not have the same luck as Golcar as the former went down 3-0 to long travellers Cleator Moor Celtic, James Bell, Callum Birdsall and Josh Charlton with the goals for Craig Routledge’s side. Emley certainly did not have the rub of any green on Saturday away at Lower Breck after as in the first half The Pewitt's saw themselves two goals down within twelve minutes, and two men down due to injuries. Emley did cause Breck some concern on forty-eight minutes when John Lududu netted, but just as the official signalled for injury-time, Conor Roberts settled the tie for Gary Moore’s Liverpool side.

SATURDAY REVIEW AN EXCITING OPENING DAY

Page 11: Charnock Richard Football Club 01 · game, and a safe journey home aftwerwards. After an impressive pre-season, we played Rylands in our first game on Saturday, although it was a

The best result of the day fell for AFC Darwen who ran out 6-1 winners away at Holker Old Boys. The victory, which included braces for Jack Iley, Aaron Fleming and single goals for Luke Holden and Corey Harrison, saw Luke Evan’s side travel back down the M6 with three points and the top spot for at least a few days. Ashton Town has certainly made a name for themselves off the field recently after tying up with Darts Professional Stephen Bunting and they certainly hit the big fish, defeating AFC Liverpool 5-1 to secure the second spot on opening day. Meanwhile, Daisy Hill pulled off a superb 3-1 win over Bacup Borough. Hill finished second-bottom last season whilst Bacup will be hoping to push on from their eighth-placed finish last term, and with goals from Joseph Mullarkey, an own goal and a Jordan Hussey finish, secured all three points. 120 fans packed into Chadderton’s ARK Fleetech Stadium and saw David Fish’s side come from behind twice against St Helens Town and eventually seal all three points thanks to a Leon Lluobe strike on sixty-nine minutes. Whilst Steeton and Shelley rounded up Saturday’s First Division North winners with 2-1 wins over AFC Blackpool and Garstang respectively. All three goals at the Mechanics Ground came in the first half with Steeton racing to a two-goal lead through Ben Clarkson and Jack Richmond. Seconds later, Blackpool had one back when Joe Robinson scored but they couldn’t muster another goal in the second half. Whilst in Lancashire, Craig Billington netted a brace for Shelley, their first-ever league win over Garstang. The only draw of the weekend in the NWCFL First Division North came at Nelson as they came from behind against last season’s bottom side Atherton LR. William Higginson put Atherton ahead on fifty-three minutes, but just 90 seconds later the score was level as Jack Coop scored as the game ended 1-1. And in the First Division South, fans were treated to a feast to super value-for-money games up and down the region. Just two new teams entered the league this term as West Didsbury & Chorlton and Abbey Hey were both relegated from the NWCFL top flight last season. There were mixed fortunes for both

sides as West ran out 4-0 winners away at Eccleshall, whilst Abbey suffered a 4-2 defeat at home against last season’s runners-up Vauxhall Motors. James Cottee, Jamie Forbes, Matthew Eckersley and Joshua Tinker all netted for West as they look to return straight away to the NWCFL Premier Division. However, Abbey fell to a defeat at the hands of one of the favourites Vauxhall, as Abbey initially took the lead through Deane Smalley, but the visitors rallied with four goals, two in either half as they took control at M18. A further consolation goal was scored by Abbey’s Smalley, his second of the afternoon but that was it in front of 124 spectators. Two big winners in the division were FC Oswestry and Barnton who ran our 4-0, and 3-0 winners as both sides kept clean sheets. Oswestry saw goals for Michael O’Reilly, a brace for Kevin Renshaw and a single goal from David Howard secured the opening day victory away at Abbey Hulton United. Whilst, Barnton sprinted to a good afternoon’s victory away at Ellesmere Rangers, Samuel Houghton, Luke Wilson-Jones and Connor Anderson all were on the scoresheet. Two other teams had two-goal margin wins with St Martins running out 3-1 victors at New Mills and Cammell Laird 1907 wining 2-0 at home against Cheadle Town. St Martins initially fell behind from the penalty spot but a brace from David Easthope, and a single goal from Jamie Hands secured the win Paul Moore’s team. Whilst, Ollie Nugent and Michael Furlong scored at polar opposite ends of the game as Cheadle Town were eventually put to the sword. Maine Road, Sandbach United and Wythenshawe Amateurs all won by a single goal to secure three points on a warm afternoon in the North West (South). Maine defeated Alsager Town 2-1, Ben Davidson with a decisive brace, whilst Sandbach had to wait until the eighty-eighth minute as Ryan Allcock netted his second of the afternoon securing the win over Wythenshawe Town, and Amateurs defeated Stockport Town 2-1, Alan Dolan and Terry Mupariwa finding the net. Lastly, completing the thirty fixture and the 111 goals scored on Saturday afternoon was Cheadle Heath Nomads one-one draw with Stone Old Alleynians, both goals coming in the first half, Richard Tindall for Cheadle and Luke Askey for Alleynians.

F ootball wit and humour has not abandoned the non-league game, as I found in abundance when visiting

Silsden on the 27th July for our final pre-season game. I was sat in the stand alongside Ian Livesey, who was working on our club twitter social media service. To my right was a group of elderly Silsden devotees of long standing.

Charnock were 3-0 to the good, when, with about ten minutes to go, the ‘homesters’ scored. The old chap next to me said “This coming season we will be developing a new concept” “What is that?” I asked. “Well” he said, with all seriousness, “We will be concentrating on scoring consolation goals”. Prior to the game I had asked if a team sheet would be made available.I was told that the secretary, John Barclay, was away but someone would be doing one. After further enquiry a gentleman appeared who proceeded to type out a team sheet on the club computer. He quickly raced through the Silsden Line up at great speed before filling in the Charnock team at an equally manic pace. “What’s the rush” I asked. “My lad is playing at Clitheroe and I’m off as soon as I’ve done this” he said. To his horror he then discovered that there was no A4 paper to be found in the office. He quickly unpinned two notices from the office notice board and turned the paper over and printed two team sheets off on the blank side of the crumpled notices. He shoved one of the team sheets into my hand saying “I’m off”. In his haste he pinned the other sheet up outside in the pouring rain at the turnstile entrance instead of displaying it in the clubhouse, where most of the people had gathered. I noticed an error on the sheet and pointed it out to the man on the gate. Josh Veitch was listed as number 14 and also number 17. “He must be wearing both shirts” was his answer to my enquiry.

Since penning my Secretary’s notes, we have signed striker Jack Kay. Jack arrived at Mossie Park on a dual-registration from National League side AFC Fylde just prior to the opening

of the 2019-20 campaign. He was on a duel-registration in March during the 2018-19 season with Northern Premier League outfit Ramsbottom United whist with the ‘Coasters’. He joined AFC Fylde when he was 16 years old and has spent four and a half years at Mill Farm. However, he spent a few months with Squires Gate when he was 17. Jack also had a short spell with Padiham in 2018-19. Jack, along with the other players who have joined the ranks here at Mossie Park this summer, are most welcome, and we hope that they will enjoy a long and happy association with Charnock Richard. We are delighted that they have chosen to join us.

Talking of registrations, this summer we have had to apply for international clearance from four counties; Finland, Gibraltar, Italy and Wales for players registering with us for the first time. In accordance with FIFA Regulations, international clearance is required for any player over the age of 10 who is seeking to register for a club in England and has previously been registered for a club abroad (including the other Home Associations; Scotland, Northern Ireland & Wales), or who is a foreign national seeking to register for the first time in this country. Clubs and competitions operating near the borders between England and Wales/Scotland need to be particularly cautious - a player can only play football in one country (subject to international clearance) and cannot play football in two countries on different days, under any circumstances. In all my years in club administration, I have never before applied for international clearance from either Gibraltar or Finland. So it has been a first for me. One remarkable fact was that none of these four applications took more than a week to complete satisfactorily; another first for me. One of the longest waits that I ever experienced for clearance was when I was at Irongate for a player who had been in America which took four weeks to complete. At about the same time as the American application was sent, I had dispatched and application for clearance for a player who had been playing in Australia which took five or six days to complete. For some reason getting clearance from America has

ISN'T THAT A PIP? DAVE ROWLAND

Whatever occurs, well done one and all.

always proved a somewhat irksome business.

Last week, one of the three North West Counties League Regional Meetings took place in our clubhouse. One of the clubs present was Yorkshire side Emley, who have been laterally moved from Division 1 of the Northern Counties East League, which is one of our sister leagues at Steps 5 & 6 in the National League System. I remember them well from my days at Bamber Bridge and before that at Southport. It brought back some happy memories. Emley, along with one of the other newcomers, Golcar United, will be joining the two other Yorkshire sides

in Division 1 North, Shelley Community and Steeton. Now isn’t that a pip?

We look towards the 2019-20 season with guarded optimism and hope that our campaign will be a good one. Once again we will be engaged in four cup competitions; the FA Cup, The FA Vase, The Lancashire Challenge Trophy and the League Challenge Cup; this little lot alongside North West Counties League Premier Division football. It promises to be yet another exciting season here at Mossie Park. Enjoy the football.

Dave Rowland, Secretary.

24 THE OFFICIAL CHARNOCK RICHARD FOOTBALL CLUB PROGRAMME

F rom the start of season 2019-2020, The FA are introducing temporary dismissals for all Leagues, Clubs and

Teams that sit outside the National League System from Step 5 and below, this includes Youth Leagues.

What is temporary dismissal? A temporary dismissal is a timed period away from playing the game if a player receives by the referee a yellow card for dissent (C2). This will be managed by the Referee and he will manage this process.

Clubs/ LeaguesIs this mandatory? From the start of season 2019-2020, yes this process will be implemented for those participants described above.

Is this for all cautions? At the minute this process is only for cautions that are received for dissent (C2).

Does this apply to all participants in the game? This process applies only to players and not substitutes or coaching staff.

How will we know if the referee has applied a temporary dismissal? The referee will show a yellow card and point to the touchline.

How long will the Temporary Dismissal last? 10 minutes for all matches of 90 minutes 8 minutes for all other matches

When does the time commence? The time commences when play restarts.

Can the player go back on after the time period? The player will be allowed back onto the field of play when the referee confirms he can, but there doesn’t need to be a stoppage in play.

Can we substitute a player when he is in the sin bin?A player cannot be substituted until the temporary dismissal has expired and not at all if all substitutes have been used.

Can a Temporary Dismissed player warm up?Yes

Will the Referee working on his own be able to control the Sin Bin Period?Yes if they follow the correct procedure.

What happens if there is not enough time left to complete the Temporary Dismissal time?If the sanction was given in the first half or before extra time, the player will recommence the Temporary Dismissal at the start of the next game period. If the game concludes before the sanction has expired, the sanction will end; there is no requirement for the player to serve the remainder of the time at the following match.

What happens if there are kicks from the penalty mark at the end of extra time and the sin bin has not expired? The player will be allowed to participate.

What is the sin bin area? There is no set defined sin bin area; the player must just be off the playing area.

TEMPORARY DISMISSAL SIN BIN FAQ

25THE OFFICIAL CHARNOCK RICHARD FOOTBALL CLUB PROGRAMME

What happens if the Team go down to less than 7 players as a result of a Temporary Dismissal? If it is the player’s second sin bin and not permitted to return – the game will be abandoned.

Does this still get reported to the County FA?The referee will still need to report this to the County FA who will process the caution for the purpose of it being on the participant’s record, and the club will still be required to acknowledge this.

Is there still an administration fee?No, for a simple Temporary Dismissal of one offence in a game, no there is no £10 administration.

Does this caution count towards a caution accumulation? Yes, they will count towards the total caution accumulation regulations.

How do repeat offences work? If a player commits another offence (red or yellow card) during the sin bin period they cannot take any further part in the game and cannot be substituted. This also includes the period between being informed that he/she is temporarily dismissed ie: on the field of play as well as the time he/she leaves the field of play and begins the sin-bin period. If the player commits a non-dissent caution at any time on the field of play in addition to the sin bin period will continue to play. If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution (and no other offences) will receive a 2nd period in the sin bin. At the end of that period, the player can take no further part in the game but can be substituted. All other Laws of the Game remain unaffected, so if a player receives two cautions for a non-dissent caution they will be sent off in the normal manner.

Page 30: Charnock Richard Football Club 01 · game, and a safe journey home aftwerwards. After an impressive pre-season, we played Rylands in our first game on Saturday, although it was a

T he first game of the season is not the best time to play a newly promoted team and particularly not at their

ground but Charnock were faced with this fixture and it proved to be as difficult as expected with the Villagers falling to a 3-2 defeat. Charnock created a number of chances in the first half but could not hit the target and should really have been in the lead but had to be satisfied with a 1-1 score line. The home team stepped up their game somewhat in the second period and some disappointing defending from the Villagers allowed them take a 3-1 lead but the Villagers fought back, reduced the deficit with ten minutes remaining and they could have snatched an equaliser.

It was manager Ryan Donnellan’s first competitive match following the retirement of Andy Westwell. With Spencer Bibby and Ashley Young on holiday and Oliver Turner with the reserves still seeking match fitness after missing most of the pre-season due to holiday the Charnock squad included four new signings. Goalkeeper Ben Ascroft was making his debut in the starting eleven that included Jack Bennett who had returned to the club after several seasons playing elsewhere.

It was a sunny, warm day with almost no wind, typical first game of the season weather. Rylands won the toss so Charnock kicked off. The team in green made the brighter start but there was little goalmouth action until on five minutes Wolhuter’s shot was blocked by Walker and Ascroft caught the follow up shot from Freeman. Charnock then had Davison put Fairhurst away down the right and his cross was just fractionally too high for Grimshaw. A minute later Bennett found Grimshaw and his shot from

an acute angle was blocked with his foot by the keeper and the loose ball was turned out for a corner. Rylands took the lead after 16 minutes, a deep cross from the right found Lomax at the back post and his header hit the underside of the bar and bounced down before the ball was cleared, however, the assistant indicated that it had crossed the line. The game continued to be fairly even but it was the Villagers who were the most threatening setting up a series a half chances. A free kick from Woods found Grimshaw at the back post but his header failed to find the target. When McCall, well out of his goal, only found Davison, with his mishit clearance, Matt’s attempt from distance on an unattended goal dropped over the bar. A free kick by Woods straight down the middle almost landed on Fairhurst’s head right in front of goal. Then Oxley was brought down on the edge of the box and Grimshaw’s free kick deflected off the wall for a corner. Charnock were creating chances but failing to hit the target but when Grimshaw was bowled over in the six yard box by McCall, the keeper pleaded his innocence, but GRIMSHAW equalised from the penalty spot after 30 minutes. Rylands were seeing plenty of possession but were failing to threaten the Charnock goal. They had the ball in the net after 31 minutes but the goal was disallowed apparently for offside. The final 15 minutes of the first half were notable for Charnock continuing to threaten with, in particular, free kicks from Mark Woods setting up several chances for Carl Grimshawbut his headers all failed to find the target. So the Villagers had to be satisfied with a 1-1 score line at the interval.

The second half saw Rylands produce a number of threatening attacks. They adopted a more long ball style and consequently the Charnock defence was often out numbered. On 51 minutes the Villagers were lucky to survive after a quick break saw McNamara break clear but as Ascroft advanced he shot narrowly over

the bar. Jack Kay who signed earlier in the week from AFC Fylde made his debut on 61 minutes replacing Oliver Oxley who had, as usual, put in plenty of running up front. Rylands regained the lead on 63 minutes, Scarisbrick was allowed to run from deep, avoiding at least three tackles before beating Ascroft; it was a really disappointing goal to concede. Fairhurst replied with a shot from distance but it did not trouble McCall in the home goal. On 66 minutes another break by the home team saw the Charnock defence outnumbered and White took advantage, having a clear chance to shoot past Ascroft.

Lewis Haydock came on to make his debut and replaced Bennett after 68 minutes and only three minutes later he was booked. The home team continued to threaten and Walker had to head one cross over his own crossbar. Ryan Schofield replaced Griffith on 81 minutes and Charnock surged forward looking to get back into the game. A minute later Grimshaw managed to scramble the ball to FAIRHURST and he, from the edge of the area, found the corner of the net. Charnock were back in the game. It was now a case of the home team hanging on to their lead. Danny Regan had been a real threat down the left for most of the game and he went on several good runs but the home defence stood firm. After the game moved into added time Jones required extensive attention after a clash of heads with Grimshaw and consequently there was almost 10 minutes added to the second half. A Fairhurst header dropped over the bar onto the top of the netting in the final moments although it looked as if McCall had it covered. Drummond appeared to receive a red card after the final whistle for throwing an elbow at James Walker.

It had been a disappointing start to the season for the Villagers; they had created a number of half chances but failed to make them count. Rylands had not shown great accuracy in their shooting although beaten three times Ben Ascroft had not been really extended in the Charnock goal. It was just a question of analysing the game and preparing for another challenging match at home to Barnoldswick Town on the following Tuesday evening kick off 7.45pm.

CHARNOCK RICHARD 1 FLEETWOOD HESKETH 0West Lancashire League Premier DivisionSaturday 9th August 2014

Team: Gavin Bates, Damian Dashti, Ross O’Farrell, Ashley Young, Liam Hayton, Mike Fletcher, Matt Mawdesley (Spencer Bibby 71), Andy Roberts, John Sanderson (Danny Nolan 64), David Burrows, Mark Woods (Jamie Sanderson 32). SUBS: (Not Used) Jack Bennett, Danial Hogg.

This game looked tough on paper for Charnock and so it proved with little to choose between the sides David Burrows scored the vital goal just after the hour mark. The visitors made most of the early running but Charnock settled down and a goalless first half was a fair reflection on the play. Fleetwood started well again in the second period but Charnock took an important lead after which both sides had chances but too many shots were wide of the goal.

Ashley Young was available again and he came in at centre back with O’Farrell moving to left back. Matt Mawdesley moved to the right of midfield with Dashti changing over to right back. Jamie Sanderson was on the bench along with Nolan, Hogg, Spencer Bibby and Bennett.

Fleetwood Hesketh showed last season that they could produce some excellent football and they finished the season in third place in the table. With basically the same squad they proved to be formidable opponents for Charnock in a game that produced plenty of good football but lacked the clinical finishing which would have provided more goals to entertain the crowd. Nevertheless the game was played at pace and there was plenty of exciting football so if there were any complaints at the final whistle they were very few.

It was a sunny afternoon but with a breeze that made the flags flutter and the game started with Charnock facing the wind playing towards the Mawdesley Plantation end.

Fleetwood were out of the blocks straight from the kick off and could have scored within 10 seconds, Brooks firing a centre across goal that just evaded a colleague’s foot. Fleetwood had most

of the early possession and there was four minutes on the clock before Charnock’s first attack. Woods pushed forward fed Burrows and his shot was deflected wide. Then a left wing corner produced a shot past the far post from Roberts. McCluskie then hit a shot wide after a Woods back pass came off a Charnock defender. Charnock came more into the game but Fleetwood carried a threat and Bates did well to get down to save from Brooks. When there was a mix up in the visitors’ defence Woods pounced on the ball but his effort went past the post. Woods was hurt and had to be replaced by Jamie Sanderson after 32 minutes. The first half had been very even with plenty of good football but neither goalkeeper had been stretched.

As in the first half Fleetwood tore into the game at the start of the second period. When a diagonal cross dropped unexpectedly over Hayton’s head the shot was just past the post.

Fleetwood continued to dominate the play with Charnock failing to hold onto the ball.

Burrows made a lone run into the area against two defenders and he made room for a shot but it was beyond the far post. When the ball dropped to John Sanderson his lob was hopelessly wide. Hayton headed a corner wide before Burrows set up Mawdesley coming in from the right and Wilson made a fine save. Charnock finally took the lead after 62 minutes Mawdesley fed BURROWS on the edge of the area. He had two shots blocked before his third effort rolled under the diving Wilson. Bates turned a McMullen header over the bar and got down to turn another shot around the post but Fleetwood spurned a number of chances by shooting wide. At the other end Nolan saw a shot saved brilliantly by Wilson and then when Danny went clear the keeper was out to collect the ball. It was a case of Charnock hanging on to their lead and they finally collected the three points.

Page 33: Charnock Richard Football Club 01 · game, and a safe journey home aftwerwards. After an impressive pre-season, we played Rylands in our first game on Saturday, although it was a

P reseason is now over and it has been interesting. The first few training sessions we had almost too many

players and a lot of new faces. It took a few weeks to learn so many names. We also tried to incorporate the U18 team into training but this just proved too much. As a couple of the management team were away on holiday, we wanted to get an early friendly in to start with and we ended up taking two full teams to Croston. We played a separate team each half, which was difficult in so many ways and we conceded a goal in each half. It’s never great losing, especially to local rivals, but I think we learned more from losing this game than had we won.

The next few training sessions we really pushed up the fitness, Billy’s Russian drills are now infamous. We were also trying to get a shape to the team that would mirror what the first team were doing. So going into the first home game, against Lostock St Gerards, everything felt a bit more manageable and relaxed. The game itself went very well, we played some really good looking football and won 3-0. The squad responded well and there was a really good atmosphere in training as we prepared to play Standish St. Wilfrids away. Standish was a very different test, conditions were a bit more difficult and we had a changed side. The lads kept their shape and discipline, worked really hard and dominated long periods of the game, deservedly winning 3-1. We took an improving side to Burnley Belvedere

for what was a huge test on paper. As it was midweek away, the build-up was a bit rushed and we found ourselves 2-0 down really quickly. But they started to grow into the game and were level by half- time. We then dominated the rest of the game and were unlucky not to win against a very physical, determined and experienced side. Our final pre- season game was a couple of days later and the bruising game against Burnley had taken something out of some of the players. Newburgh Harrock were another physical test, we picked up a few more knocks but the players performed brilliantly and gave us a 3 goal lead at half time. We looked comfortable second half, though we did concede and couldn’t convert any other chances.Overall, we as a management team are very happy

with how things are progressing and there is a bit of momentum going into a tough season. We have a large squad of very good and eager players, we know it will be difficult to keep them all happy but we are hoping that they will come along with us if

the results are right. We know there will be plenty of setbacks but at the moment I’m confident that the players can deal with that and go on to have a successful season, given a bit of luck, with a few more hopefully being able to start to push their way into first team reckoning. We would like to thank all the players for the hard

work they have put in already, we are hoping they carry this on. Lots of thanks too for all the people who work so tirelessly behind the scenes to put on the games and help us as a management team concentrate on the football side. We would also like to wish Ryan, the first team management and players all the best for the season. We know they have all worked hard and are a very good team to watch, we hope that they pick up the points they deserve for the effort they have put in. Hopefully everyone working together will make this another cracking season for Charnock.

I took over from Allan Sumner as Programme Editor back in the summer of 2000 when the internet was very

much in its infancy and social media was unknown; the local press were the only source of non-league football news. Over the last 19 years the scene has totally changed with the availability of all that you want to know about football at the press of a key on a computer or the touch on the screen of a tablet or smart phone.

Looking through my collection of Charnock programmes issued prior to the turn of the century there was only the odd match report so I decided that I would try and publish reports on every first team game played. With the aid of a dictaphone and my computer I succeeded in achieving my objective right up to the end of season 2015/6 when I resigned from the post. Since then I have continued to produce reports both for the programme and the club’s website but only a couple of weeks ago I realised how much things have changed in the world of match reporting.

Back in 2000 it was just a case of turning up on the touch line and noting the Charnock line-up from my knowledge of the players, if there was a new face it required a little investigation. With no team sheets available I did not look to record the opposition line-up but of course I often knew some of the players’ names of local clubs. There were no league websites so the results could only normally be obtained from the Chorley Guardian. The Lancashire Amateur Shield results particularly for the earlier rounds were very difficult to obtain as the Guardian only published the local clubs’ fortunes. However, circumstances improved with the West Lancashire League opening a website and individual clubs building their own. When Shaun Tootell joined the committee back in 2008 he set up a club site and I posted match reports from October of that year in addition to the reports in the programme.

My reports improved with the arrival of Dave Rowland as secretary in 2012. He had been the match reporter at Bamber Bridge FC and

consequently was very helpful by always obtaining the opposition line-up; it was not a requirement for the opposing club to name their team at this time. Dave also acted a spotter as he called it, a second pair of eyes to note events on the pitch. My reports were now much more comprehensive and included the scorers of the opposition goals.

As Facebook and Twitter became more fashionable individual club websites have not been updated so regularly and indeed Charnock’s Facebook site has been a good source for club news in recent years. As Twitter became increasingly popular Adam Donnellan set up a club account (@CharnockFC) several years ago and commenced providing live updates on Charnock’s first team matches. A really welcome service for those not able to be at games. Last season Ian Livesey joined the club and took over the role of “Twitter reporter” and his tweets are really numerous and comprehensive. He is now the third member of the reporting team that sits together at games home and away. Ian uses a laptop computer to post tweets and this also allows access to Twitter feeds on other matches around the north west so we are kept up to date with the scores of other games in the NWCL as they progress.

Perhaps the best example of how the internet has transformed the world of match reporting came in the recent friendly match at home to Clitheroe. As usual in the ‘Press Box’ we scanned the opposition names on the team sheet to see who we recognised with the name of Connor King immediately standing out as he was our goalkeeper at the start of last season. There was one name however that looked familiar and we just could not place him, Terry Cummings, there was only a short delay before Ian announced that he had played against us for Burscough the previous season. The wonders of Google!

It is all a long way from back in the olden days when the only way to learn the fortunes of your favourite club was by tuning in on the radio to Sports Report at 5.00pm when the full football results were read.

THE LAST WORD KEITH READER

Due to printing and editor deadlines I have to writethis final column of the season with four leaguegames outstanding so it is impossible to comment onCharnock’s final position in the table and, most importantly, where they will be playing their footballnext season. Will it be in the Premier Division by automatic promotion or through the play-offs ormaybe we will have to be satisfied with having a second season in Division One but whatever happensit has been a very successful and exciting first seasonin the North West Counties League.

This season saw Charnock make their debut in the FAVase and it has been very satisfactory but with a little bit ofluck it could have been even more successful. In the preliminary rounds we won at Whickham in the North Eastthen visited Yorkshire to beat Harrogate Railway Athletic. The First Round Proper saw a home tie against old opponents Barnoldswick Town which we won after extratime. The home defeat at Mossie Park at the hands ofStaveley Miners Welfare was largely due to having to fieldan understrength team; suspensions for Spencer Bibby,Josh Norgate and Mike Fletcher all made them ineligible,Ashley Young missed through a knee problem and thenlosing Danny Smith to injury before half time and a missedpenalty all contributed to the defeat. If we had won wewould have had a trip up to play South Shields of theNorthern League who are now through to the Wembleyfinal. At the time they were averaging gates of over 1200.Win or lose it would have been a bumper pay day for theclub with a share of the gate receipts and more FA money for reaching that stage of the competition. As it was Staveley made the journey, pocketed the money andlost 3-0.

Charnock were drawn away to Bamber Bridge in the firstround of the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy, it was ourdebut in the competition and against all the odds cameaway with a 2-0 win. Drawn away at Ashton Athletic in thenext round we had plenty of chances to win the game inthe first half but in the end lost 1-0. Ashton went on to win2-1 against Radcliffe Borough in the final at the MacronStadium after knocking out Chorley in the semi-final. A littlemore accuracy with our shooting at Ashton and who knowswhat could have happened? In our league cup debuts wemade early exits in both competitions. In the Macron Cupwe were unlucky to lose 2-1 at Handley Town, the winningpenalty being awarded for the ball hitting Josh Norgate’sshoulder. We successfully negotiated our way through theReusch First Division Cup to the quarter-finals where welost 4-1 at home to Widnes.

Football squads inevitably evolve over the years and anumber of new signings were made for this season. Some players have fitted in well and have made regularappearances others disappeared; several did not evenmake one appearance. Over previous seasons CarlGrimshaw and David Burrows formed a successful goalscoring partnership for the club. Last season they totalled77 goals between them and there was the expectancythat they would score a similar number this season. Unfortunately domestic problems resulted in Dave making himself unavailable and he has been sorely missed.

In the 2015-16 season Damian Dashti passed the landmark of 500 appearances for the first team and hehas continued to feature in most match squads this season. He is now approaching 550 appearances whichis another remarkable record of dedication to CharnockRichard FC. There have been other impressive performances by players this season but for me oneplayer has stood out above anyone else - Ross O’Farrellhas had an outstanding season to date. Ross is anotherplayer that has been at Charnock for almost all his career first appearing in the ‘A’ team back in season2007-08 from where he has worked his way up to become a regular in the first team squad. He is mychoice as “Player of the Year”.

Finally I must mention the support that the club have enjoyed both home and away. To date home attendanceshave only dropped below 100 once and the average sofar is 140. Everyone at the club has put in a remarkableamount of time and effort and come May we will be looking forward to our second season in the North WestCounties League. I hope to be writing this column againnext season, many thanks for reading it.
