Dear Friend,

Thank you for your gifts of time, talent, and treasure. Thanks to you, we have opened our doors for our twentieth school year, and your significant investments have enabled us to embark on two new partnerships to increase accessibility for working families and deepen impact for children.

In this report, we share a reminder of the need for early invervention and a snapshot of your impact on our children, their families, and our institutions.

We know from an external alumni study that our children outperform their Hispanic peers in K-2nd grade.

We envision a future where all children in our community are able to enter school ready to succeed.

You make this future possible. Thank you.

Humbly,

Banu Valladares Executive Director

All children should enter school with the skills and engaged families they need to succeed.

You make it possible.

With extended day comes breakfast, lunch, and a new opportunity to build community.

Manolo Betancur is a local activist and owner of Manolo’s Bakery on Central Avenue, which has now expanded into catering.

“It is not about getting your belly full, it is about eating healthier. It is not about my business, it is about our community,” says Manolo. “It is so hard to stop thinking about the beautiful faces of CltBP’s children. The first time I saw them sitting at their lunch tables with our meals, I knew we were doing the right thing in the right place.”

Manolo’s wife Leidy Milena designed the menu over several months, focusing on healthy meals that were also connected to culture and curriculum.

“She deserves all the credit, my amazing wife. She designed a menu that is unique, international, healthy, and cost-effective. We have learned that education is a process where we all play a role - and ours is to lead this food revolution.”

Our teachers are guided by Reggio Emilia, a student-centered pedagogy rooted in respect, responsibility, and community. This year, our Preschool Program Coordinator attended professional development in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Our dual language curriculum is comprehensive, research-based, and features exploration and discovery as a way of learning.

This year, we converted four of our eight half-day classrooms into extended day (6.5 hours) through partnership with MECK Pre-K, serving 72 children, our largest graduating class to date.

The Future of Preschool Programs

Page 6: CHARLOTTE BILINGUAL€¦ · In this report, we share a reminder of the need for early invervention and a snapshot of your impact on our children, their families, and our institutions

Last fall, children entered CltBP with 38% of the skills needed for success in school. By the spring, they had doubled their skills to 78%.

A recent alumni study found our graduates enter Kindergarten ahead of peers and maintain consistent growth and advantage through 2nd grade.

of Preschool Program children improved their English-language skills.1

When Alejandro entered Charlotte Bilingual Preschool at age 3, he and his parents only spoke Spanish. They enrolled in the Green Room pilot, where Alejandro soon made friends with both Spanish-speaking and English-speaking children.

Alejandro’s parents were active in our Family Program and both enrolled in our English as a Second Language classes, now provided in partnership with CPCC.

This year, Alejandro is enrolled in one of our MECK Pre-K extended day classrooms. In addition to building kindergarten readiness skills, Alejandro is now bilingual, giving him long-term social, cognitive, and economic advantages.

When he enters elementary school next year, Alejandro will be able to communicate with his teachers and peers, and his parents will have the tools to advocate for him and support his education at home.

Thank you for making a bright future possible for Alejandro and hundreds of others children like him over the past twenty years.

You make it possible.

The future includes you. Finances July 1, 2018 - June 30, 2019

Every year, 3,000 Latinx children enter Kindergarten in Mecklenburg County.

Charlotte Bilingual Preschool is committed to evolving to meet the needs of our growing community, and we started this year through two new partnerships.

Our families told us that they needed extended day programs. In response, we are partnering with MECK Pre-K to lengthen the school day, deepening impact for students and increasing accessibility for working families.

This year, we are also piloting the proven ParentChild+ model to address the trend of children entering CltBP further behind each year. Serving children ages 2-4, Early Learning Specialists will support kindergarten readiness and connect families to resources in weekly visits for two years.

Our long-term objective is to scale up the CltBP model by leveraging partnerships while carefully preserving quality, cultural relevance, and sensitivity. We believe all children should enter school with the skills and engaged families they need to succeed.

We need your help to meet the need in our community.Donate today and build a brighter future.
