A well-matched field of nine was en-tered Tuesday for Saturday’s $1 millionPacific Classic, the 31st running of DelMar’s most lucrative annual race.

How well matched? Six of the ninehorses were placed between 3-1 and 5-1on the morning line, indicating con-tention runs deep in a field without atrue standout.

The 3-1 favorite is Express Train, who won last month’s San Diego Handi-cap by a half-length over Tripoli withRoyal Ship another three-quarters of alength back in third. That race was 11⁄16

miles, or three-sixteenths shorter thanthe 11⁄4-mile Classic.

Royal Ship, who beat Express Trainby 41⁄2 lengths while narrowly losing the11⁄4-mile Hollywood Gold Cup in May atSanta Anita to Country Grammer, is 7-2on the line for trainer Richard Mandellaand jockey Mike Smith, each of whomhas won this race four times.

Mandella also trains Tizamagician, one of only two horses in the field with awin at longer than nine furlongs. BothTizamagician and Cupid’s Claws havewon at 11⁄2 miles.

At 4-1 is Dr. Post, the lone shipperfrom out of town. Trained by Todd

Pletcher, Dr. Post has won two stakesraces this year in the New York area.

The winner of the race receives anautomatic fees-paid berth into theBreeders’ Cup Classic, which will be runNov. 6 at Del Mar.
