East Jordan 6-3, Newberry 5-3

EAST JORDAN — The East Jordan

baseball team got things off to a good start

in picking up a 6-5 opening win over visit-

ing Newberry on April 16. The teams bat-

tled to a 3-3 tie in the nightcap, called due

to darkness and weather conditions.

In the opener, Dustin Hejka earned the

pitching victory, tossing a gritty five in-

nings of work, allowing four runs on three

hits, while striking out four and walking

seven in the 36 degree conditions.

“These young men really gritted out this

win this evening,” East Jordan coach Tom

Reid Jr. said. “I know they probably could-

n’t feel their fingers by the end of the first

game, I know I couldn’t.”

The Red Devils jumped out to an early 6-

1 lead, and then had to hold on as the Indi-

ans battled back to pull within one, 6-5,

with a four-run fourth inning.

Hejka also paced the EJ offense, pound-

ing out a pair of hits, scoring twice and

swiping three bases. Noah Raymond added

an RBI single, while Colin Petrie also had

a hit.

Tim Schut finished with a pair of RBI’s

on a groundout in the first and a sacrifice

fly in the third inning.

“(Dustin) Hejka pitched a great game

and when the boys got on base, they got

around to the plate to make it count,”

coach Reid added. “We stole 11 bases as a

team and that speaks a lot for the condi-

tioning work the boys have put in all year

long through every sport they’ve partici-

pated in.”

In the shortened game two, Newberry

got things rolling early as they pushed

across three runs in the top of the first,

but the Red Devils wouldn’t be outdone as

they fought back with solo runs in second,

third and fourth innings to tie the game at

3-3 before the game was called by the um-

piring crew due to darkness and dropping

temperatures.

Noah Raymond was on the mound for

East Jordan, allowing two earned runs on

only two hits, fanning eight and walked

four.

Red Devil junior, Herschell Sutton with

a pair of key RBI hits, one in the second

and the other in the fourth, scoring Ray-

mond who led off the inning with a single,

and Schut had the other RBI on one hit.

“The boys should be proud of their ef-

forts tonight,” Reid Jr. said. “They played

good team baseball, Raymond and Hejka

pitched well, and all 15 boys put in a yeo-

man’s effort in frigid temperatures while

gritting through the games tonight. New-

berry has a very solid team and we were

equal to the task, I’m quite pleased.”

Jeff Miller threw a

complete game two-

Charlevoix 15-16, Pellston 0-1

EAST JORDAN — The Rayder baseball

team rebounded from a loss earlier in the

week and took it out on Pellston as

Charlevoix swept the non-conference dou-

bleheader, 15-0, 16-1 on April 19, with the

help of a few Rayder home runs at the East

Jordan High School baseball field.

Game one saw Austin Putman toss three

innings of one hit ball in picking up the

win in the mercy shortened game, Putman

struck out four and walked one.

At the plate, Putman led the way with

two hits, including a double and four

RBI’s, while Nate Moon and Will Telgenhof

hit home runs to combine for another

three RBI’s. Luke Klinger doubled among

his two hits and Hunter Cox added a pair

of hits.

“We had our first nine batters all reach

base without an out being recorded in

game one,” Charlevoix coach Allen Telgen-

hof said. “Our first out was a sacrifice fly,

then batting for the second time in the in-

ning, Will Telgenhof and Nate Moon hit

back-to-back homers to make it 11-0.”

In game two, not much changed as the

Rayder seemed to be clicking on all cylin-

ders, scoring four times in the first, adding

a ten spot in the third and a pair of runs in

the fourth to force another mercy.

Logan Eckhardt went the distance for

Charlevoix, tossing four innings, allowing

one earned run on four hits, walking one

and fanning four.

Charlevoix’s offense was led by Putman

with two doubles and three RBI’s, while

Moon added his second round tripper of

the day, this time a three-run bomb. Cox

added two hits, Shane Sutherland tripled;

KeNan Borths, Will Telgenhof and Chris-

tian Matye all singled.

“After a tough split with Grayling on

Thursday, everything went our way today,”

coach Telgenhof said. “Pellston has a real

young team and our guys took advantage

of their mistakes and hit the ball well.

Our pitchers threw the ball well, and it

was especially nice to see Logan (Eck-

hardt) do so well in his first game on the

mound this year.”

“I really want to thank Phyllis Ol-

szewski and Tom Reid, East Jordan’s ath-

letic director and coach, for letting us use

their field to play since ours still isn’t

playable. It was really great of them to

host us.”

The Rayders also stole 20 bases on the af-

ternoon.

Charlevoix 5-3, Grayling 1-13

GRAYLING — Charlevoix junior Nate

Moon supplied all the arm needed and

added a key double for the Rayders as they

took the opener of a split in a Lake Michi-

gan Conference twinbill from Grayling on

April 17.

Moon tossed all six innings for

Charlevoix, allowing one run on five hits,

striking out eight and walking four.

At the plate, Noah Certa finished with a

pair of hits, including a double and two

RBI’s, while Moon also doubled in a pair of

runs for the Rayders.

Also for Charlevoix, Devin Largent, Will

Telgenhof, Luke Klinger and J.J. Bottom-

ley all singled, with Largent picking up an

RBI.

“I thought we played a nice first game

and Nate (Moon) was dominant again on

the mound for us,” Rayder coach Allen Tel-

genhof said. “He pitched especially well

with numbers on base.”

In the nightcap, Grayling rebounded

with a 13-3 victory, courtesy of 14 hits.

“The wheels fell off,” coach Telgenhof

said. “We had some uncharacteristic er-

rors at tough times which gave them some

extra chances and extra bases, but give

Grayling credit, they really hit the ball

well.”

Hunter Cox took the loss on the mound,

allowing six runs on seven hits over two

innings. He also struck out and walked

three.

Bottomley worked three innings of re-

lief, allowing four runs on five hits, fan-

ning two and KeNen Borths gave up three

runs on two hits and struck out a pair in

one inning of work.

“For us Noah Certa and Nate Moon led

the way offensively and Will Telgenhof did

a great job defensively,” the coach added.

Certa and Moon finished with two hits

each, while Will Telgenhof and Luke

Klinger each singled.

Charlevoix is 4-2 overall, 1-1 LMC.

JV results Charlevoix JV 15, Pellston JV 1

The JV Rayders opened their season

with a 15-1 victory over the Pellston JV on

April 19.

Jordan Adkins picked up the win on the

mound, striking out two in the process.

Coach Brandon Webb added that the de-

fense was sharp, turning two double plays

in the contest.

Adkins was also a beast on the offensive

side of the ball, pounding out two hits, in-

cluding a triple, scoring twice, stealing a

pair of bases and adding two RBI’s.

Mason Louiselle added three hits with

four RBI’s, while Alex Klieber, Jake Seger,

Justin Adkins and Forrest Noirot added

two hits each.

Brad Klinger finished with a pair of

stolen bases, while Christian Matye and

Cam Alden reached base three times each.

EAST JORDAN — The

Charlevoix girls soccer team de-

feated East Jordan 8-0, amid wet

and rainy conditions, which cre-

ated a very slippery playing sur-

face on April 21.

Charlevoix took a 5-0 lead into

halftime as junior midfielder

Leah Davis recorded a hat trick

in first half. Also scoring for the

Rayders was freshman forward

Julia Doskoch and sophomore

Kelsey Engstrom.

In the second half, Davis found

the back of the net for the fourth

time, while sophomore mid-

fielder Kylee Scholten and junior

midfielder Elizabeth Way each

scored as well. Way’s goal at the

28:09 mark ended the contest.

“The girls did a great job in less

than desirable conditions,”

Charlevoix coach Pete Scholten

said. “Leah Davis was again

amazing this evening burying

four goals for us. Freshman de-

fender Grace Sutherland played

her first varsity game tonight

and played a real strong defense

for us.”

Automotive Review

The all-new 2015 Ford F-150 has

already scaled the highest points

of the Continental Divide and ex-

perienced the most extreme

weather conditions as Ford has

set out to engineer its toughest

truck yet. Before the first 2015 F-

150 rolls off the assembly line, it

will have been subjected to 10

million miles of combined real-

world and simulated durability

testing.

“We wanted to build the tough-

est, most capable F-150, while

making it as much as 700 pounds

lighter,” said Pete Reyes, Ford F-

150 chief engineer. “We chal-

lenged the team to torture the

truck harder than any F-150 be-

fore it.”

The new F-150 towed trailers

over mountain passes in temper-

atures above 120 degrees, with-

stood frame-punishing terrain on

an off-road course and conquered

a frozen lake at minus 40 degrees.

It endured high-humidity cham-

bers, salt vats and riverbeds. The

F-150 towed heavy loads up gruel-

ing, steep roads. Robots slammed

its doors and tailgates, and

dropped heavy objects onto the

bed of the truck. It persevered

through twisting and shaking

from multiple directions.

Some Ford tests are so extreme

that a five-day period equals 10

years or 150,000 miles of abuse by

the roughest customers. Reyes is

quick to remind customers that

the extreme tests Ford runs are

conducted in controlled settings.

“I discourage anyone from trying

to create their own top 10 list,” he

said. “Leave the testing to us.”

The all-new F-150 has been

through hundreds of torture

tests. including:

- Seven-channel input: Ford

built a special torture rack that

violently twists and shakes the

truck seven ways – simultane-

ously – for five days, simulating

the equivalent of 225,000 miles.

This testing isn’t random. After

running a fully instrumented

truck through durability

courses, engineers recorded the

forces the road surface put on

various vehicle components.

Those forces are replicated in

seven channels – four up and

down, two side to side and one

lengthwise down the center. The

frame and body are stressed to

see how well the truck performs

in situations that might bend the

frame.

- Silver Creek: The famous Sil-

ver Creek durability course in

Romeo, Mich., combines two ex-

tremely rough roads. One section

of the route has 15 distinct types

of chuckholes, while the other is

made from broken pieces of con-

crete. Test drivers beg off this

route after one pass because the

pounding and speed is so intense.

Imagine hitting a crater-sized

pothole every five feet for miles –

going 20 mph. With this road sur-

face, 500 miles is equal to 20,000

miles on the country’s roughest

roads.

- Power Hop Hill: This wash-

board Ford test track in Romeo

was created to replicate a steep,

off-road dirt trail in the Hualapai

Mountains of northwest Ari-

zona. The severe 11 percent grade

– steeper than the final section of

most ski jump ramps – stresses

engine and transmission compo-

nents when the wheels lose con-

tact and then return to the

surface.

- Corrosion bath: The 2015 F-

150 is the first high-volume vehi-

cle with a high-strength steel

frame, and body panels made of

high-strength, aluminum alloy –

the same material used to make

armor-plated tanks and navy

warships. An advantage alu-

minum has over steel is that it

doesn’t produce red rust. So Ford

had to go beyond the usual tests

that include driving vehicles

through countless salt baths and

soaking them in high-humidity

chambers. The company devel-

oped a modified corrosion test

using an acidified spray to be

more aggressive on the high-

strength, aluminum alloy. After

simulating 10 years of exposure,

the aluminum material showed

virtually no signs of degrada-

tion.

From acid baths to Power Hop Hill, 10ways Ford torture-tested the 2015 F-150

Versatile BoyneCity home offersrental income orhome businesspossibilitiesBy Jim akans

Situated within an easy walk to beautiful

downtown Boyne City, this wonderfully

maintained home offer lots of possibilities

for the homebuyer, investor or entrepre-

neur.

The approximately 1,611 square foot, four-

bedroom, three-bath residence is currently

set up as a duplex, and it is also zoned to be

utilized as a professional office as well. So

this is an excellent opportunity for those

seeking an income property, or it could

make a great spot to set up a home business

and even has a private entrance perfectly

suited to that application. Two of the bed-

rooms are located on the main level, which

also features a wood-burning fireplace in

the living area, and the remaining two bed-

rooms are situated on the second level.

This highly versatile and well-main-

tained home is located at 220 State Street in

Boyne City and it is listed at just $99,000.

For a more information or to arrange a

home tour, call Lynda or William Chris-

tensen at Lynda’s Real Estate Service in

Boyne City at 231-582-9555 or email

[email protected] or

[email protected]

It doesn’t matter whether you are

selling your home as a short sale or

as a traditional seller, your checklist

for home selling is identical. There

are certain things on a home selling

checklist that every responsible

seller should do.

You would utilize your home clos-

ing checklist after all of your per-

sonal belongings and furniture has

been moved. Although, not every

seller is required to prior to or on the

day of closing, most home sellers

find that they can’t begin to wrap up

the process until everything is re-

moved from the home.

Part 2 of 2

Closing CheCklist tip #6:CanCel or transfer Utili-ties, stop the newspaper

Make up a list of phone numbers

in advance of each of your utility

companies. Not every utility is al-

ways paid monthly, some are quar-

terly. If you subscribe to the

newspaper, you might have to order

your cancellation a week or more in

advance to stop newspapers from pil-

ing up in the front yard.

Closing CheCklist tip #7:leave hoUse keys, remotes, gate keys, mailbox keys

Even though the buyers will proba-

bly change the locks, find every

house key, remotes for the garage or

ceiling fans, keys to the gate and

mailbox, if any, and put them in a

kitchen drawer.

Closing CheCklist tip #8:assemble applianCe manU-als, reCeipts and war-ranties

As you were packing, you may

have come across manuals for the

HVAC, security or sprinkler system

or appliances, and set them aside. If

you have receipts from contractors

or warranties, put them into an enve-

lope and leave them in a drawer with

the manuals, along with the code for

the security alarm.

Closing CheCklist tip #9:CheCk Cabinets, drawersand storage

If your spouse or friend says she

has gone through every room with a

fine tooth comb looking for anything

left behind, run one more check. You

may find nothing more than a razor

in the shower, but at least you’ll be

able to shave in the morning. It will

give you peace of mind. I once forgot

a black felt hat I loved, which was

adorned with long peacock feathers,

on the top shelf of a closet and never

got over that loss.

Closing CheCklist tip #10:Close drapes / blinds,tUrn off lights and loCkthe door

You would think this would be a

given, but you’d be amazed at how

many people forget to close up the

house. If nobody can see inside, the

odds of someone breaking in de-

clines. If the home will be vacant for

a long time, consider leaving behind

an inexpensive lamp on a timer.
