Last RiverDogs Game: June 9 Second baseman Welfrin Mateo broke the shutout with a solo home run in the eighth as part of his RiverDogs debut but Charleston dropped their second straight to the Greenville Drive, falling, 5-1, on Saturday night at Fluor Field. The RiverDogs outhit the Drive (21-39) 8-3 in the loss with the Red Sox affiliate capitalizing on three Charleston errors to plate their runs. First baseman Victor Acosta ripped a pair of two-run extra-base hits in his first two trips to the plate to put Greenville in front 5-0 after three. Acosta scored the only run he didn’t drive in on a throwing error by Wilkerman Garcia. Right-hander Dalton Higgins was sharp in relief, retiring five of the 11 batters he faced with strikeouts and yielding just one baserunner on a hit by pitch. It was the second straight outing not allowing a hit or a run on the road trip for the Dallas Baptist product. Doggie Bites: Swingin’ Sensley: Charleston outfielder Steven Sensley extended his hitting streak to a season- long seven games yesterday with a single, a stretch where the Baton Rouge, LA native has gone 10-for-28 (.357) with 2 HR, 2 doubles and 4 RBI. The streak matches the longest of the lefty sluggers brief pro career; he also hit safely in seven straight from July 18-26 with Pulaski last season. Since being drafted last June, he has ripped 21 home runs in 107 career games. Back-to-Back-to-Back: Three RiverDogs were a piece of Charleston baseball history on Friday, driving three straight pitches out of the yard for home runs to lift Charleston to a 9-1 advantage in the 4 th inning. Wilkerman’s Garcia’s grand slam to right was his fifth home run of the season, his last three of which have all come at Fluor Field. Steven Sensley mashed the most impressive shot on the third consecutive pitch, a booming shot to right field for his team-leading eighth of the season. All three homers came against GVL starter Hildemaro Requena. Bad Blood in the Upstate: In five meetings with the Drive, all at Fluor Field, the RiverDogs only have one win to show for and two walk-off losses. Four of Greenville’s league-low 22 wins have come against the RiverDogs in the Palmetto State rivalry series. All-Star Worthy: Charleston bats Chris Hess and Steven Sensley will both represent the RiverDogs in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game next Tuesday in Greensboro. Hess, the starting third baseman for the Southern Division, and Sensley, one of the utility outfielders. It is the third straight season that Charleston has featured multiple All-Stars in the mid-summer classic. Imports Extraordinaire: The New York Yankees put all their chips on the table in the international market when they went on a 2014 spending spree, doling out over $16M in signing bonuses to international talent. The current RiverDogs roster features six of the prospects acquired from this class (RHP Alex Vargas, C Jason Lopez, IF Miguel Flames, IF Dermis Garcia, IF Wilkerman Garcia, & OF Pablo Olivares). Dermis was the top prospect of the signing class while Wilkerman (#14) and Flames (#25) each checking in amongst the top-30 at the time according to MLB.com. Narrow Margins: Following Friday’s 10-9 loss, the RiverDogs have played 29 one-run games this season, the most in the South Atlantic League and contests in which they have gone 13-16. The Holy City has fared better at home, going 9-7 in games decided by one-run at The Joe versus a 4-9 mark on the road. 41 of the Holy City’s first 60 games have been decided by two runs or fewer, also the most in the league. Olivares Going the Farrest: Dogs outfielder Pablo Olivares has picked up where he left off in May with a base hit in 5 of the first 7 games in June. The 20-year-old hit .381 (32-for-84) in 26 games last month, the best mark in the league over that span while collecting 11 multi-hit games. Cabrera Coming Along: After a season-long 0-for-27 slide from May 15-21, infielder Oswaldo Cabrera is 20 for his last 56 (.357) with 3 doubles and 7 RBI at the dish. The 19-year-old collected a hit in the last five games of the previous homestand before going 0-for-4 on Tuesday in Columbia. Pinstriped Prospects: Once again, the RiverDogs tap into one of the premier farm systems in baseball with the New York Yankees. Recently rated the second-best farm system by Baseball America pre-season and the sixth-best by MLB.com, the Bronx Bombers boast five of MLB.com’s Preseason Top-100 prospects. Charleston’s current roster features four of the Yankees’ Top-30 prospects (MLB.com, BA): INF Dermis Garcia (#22, #20), INF Oswaldo Cabrera (--, #26), RHP Alexander Vargas (--, #28), and RHP Rony Garcia (--, #29). In 2017, the Yankees led all of baseball in organizational winning percentage (.602) between the Major and minor leagues and featured seven of their eight domestic affiliates in the postseason. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E CSC 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 8 3 GVL 3 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 X 5 3 0 Charleston RiverDogs Game Notes Game 62 Charleston RiverDogs (29-31) vs. Greenville Drive (21-39) Fluor Field, Greenville, S.C. 4:05 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2018 LHP Dalton Lehnen (4-3, 2.19) Today’s Starters RHP Kutter Crawford (0-2, 1.99) South Atlantic League 2018 First Half Standings Northern Division W L GB Kannapolis (White Sox) 36 23 - Lakewood (Phillies) 35 26 3.0 Delmarva (Orioles) 32 27 4.0 West Virginia (Pirates) 31 27 4.5 Greensboro (Marlins) 29 30 7.0 Hickory (Rangers) 24 34 11.5 Hagerstown (Nationals) 23 37 13.5 Southern Division W L GB Rome (Braves) 37 24 - Augusta (Giants) 35 25 1.5 Lexington (Royals) 32 29 5.0 Columbia (Mets) 30 29 6.0 Charleston (Yankees) 29 31 7.5 Asheville (Rockies) 24 37 13.0 Greenville (Red Sox) 21 39 15.5 Upcoming Matchups (subject to change) --- Listen to the RiverDogs on 1250 WTMA and online at www.riverdogs.com.
