Anybody who experienced their teens in the ’90s would understand swooning upon meeting Leonardo

DiCaprio. But I have an admission. At this point in my life, when substance over smiles wins out, Frank Abagnale—the inspiration for Leonardo’s character in the movie Catch Me If You Can—is my dream boat. Granted, he is my father’s age, he has no Golden Globes, and pictures of Frank were never plastered in my school locker. Still, he is a legend. So, upon Frank opening his Daniel Island front door, gid-diness naturally ensued for the 30 somethings on CH+D’s production staff. That moment was captured and depicted on the cover, knowing you’ll likely have the same reaction.

In graduate school at College of Charleston, I found myself enraptured by James Joyce because his works captured—so honestly—elements of real, everyday

life. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, his pro-tagonist Stephen remarks, “I go to encounter for the mil-lionth time the reality of experience.” I’ve found that my husband and I daily seek this reality of experience. It is why we’re renting a loft on King Street before purchas-ing a home; we want to encounter our historic city from its very center. It is why we like to travel abroad; we want to taste, feel, and see an altogether unfamiliar culture.

So it is with homebuilding and remodeling. You construct a custom home for the blissful understanding that the struc-ture forming on your lot consists of a million elements tai-lored to your desires. You remodel a bathroom to witness the transformation of something old and outdated into something new and beautiful. You hire an interior designer for the joy of working with someone who knows exactly how to make two wild, patterned pillows work together chicly. You dig a pool to give your family the sentiment of having paradise right outside the backdoor. The process of creat-ing a home is an unforgettable experience within itself. This issue, we bring you pages of inspiration to fuel your home and design experiences. Ogle photos in our annual Bathroom Guide (“Au Bon Bain”) and “Inn Style” that will make you want to immediately start shopping for new fix-tures, tile, and accessories. Or, if you’d rather concentrate on other elements of the home, peruse “Freestyle” and “Designer Secrets” to see several Lowcountry projects worthy of replicating. Finally, take a moment to read our cover feature, which will take you inside the Daniel Island home of Frank Abagnale (the man who inspired the film Catch Me If You Can) and will give you a glimpse into the moments and adventures that have colored his storied life. All the best in your home endeavors,

MEET+GREET

Steven, what is your professional background, and how did you find yourself selling furniture in the American South?

I’ve traded antiques in Eastern Europe, Great Britain, Spain, and the United States. I’ve traveled around the world finding curios for the past 25 years, getting to

know all manner of the weird and wonderful. Fortunately, my passion for furniture was allowed to develop further, and for the last 22 of those years, I’ve been taking my inspirations and interpreting them into furniture designs for Steven Shell Living. At our only factory store, located in Mt. Pleasant, we proudly sell that furniture. So, you design the furniture. Who manufactures that furniture?

We actually own a production facil-ity in Indonesia (which covers 20 acres) where we employ over 1,000 master craftsmen, woodworkers, artists, finishers, millers, and sup-port staff. Each year, we ship over 100,000 items of quality furniture and accessories to hundreds of retailers in over 20 different countries customers.

Our master craftsmen use techniques that have been handed down for generations.

Your company has what you call a Green Pledge. What exactly does that mean? The majority of our furniture is con-structed from Indonesian mahogany, a sustainable resource. With over 750 items going into homes each week, we believe in replenishing the forest, and we have a replanting program in place to ensure that trees are planted in excess of what we use. With our Plant a Tree Program, we have now planted over 400,000 trees over the last five years and aim to reach half a million over the next year. For more information, call Steven Shell Living at (843) 216-3900 or visit stevenshell.com. Stop in to shop at 642 Coleman Boulevard. in Mt. Pleasant.

Honestly InspirationalLondon-born antique dealer Steven Shell drove up and down the East Coast looking for a

place to open a retail store, which would allow his daughter, newborn grandson, and son-

in-law to move to the US. After driving nearly 6,000 miles, he fell in love with Charleston’s

charm. And now, to his delight, the clan manages a showroom stocked with furnishings and

accessories inspired by 1940s Hollywood, Victorian, Gothic, and international influences.

With a wide variety of paint available on the market, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for your home, and these days, color is

not the only important factor when considering exterior paint. It’s equally as important to weigh the effects your paint may have on the environment and how long it will last. Luckily, coating technology exists that offers better protection than typical exterior paint from and for the en-vironment. By utilizing a mixture of non-toxic chemicals, exterior coating lasts longer than paint and needs to be reapplied less often, thus saving time and the resources required for frequent reapplication. This product also,

once applied, is thicker, which means it inherently pro-vides better insulation, saving you money on your energy bills. One company selling such a coating in the Charles-ton area is Rhino Shield, which offers a 25-year warranty on their applications. Rhino Shield’s special coating looks like a nice, thick coat of paint, yet it maintains its integrity over decades. Caring for the outside walls of your house is not easy, so why not get the best protection available and help the environment at the same time?

For more information, call Rhino Shield at (843) 884-1992 or visit rhinoshieldsc.com.

With spring upon us, the time to start gardening again is here. But before you bring out the shovel and scatter seeds, you might want to think about

improving the quality of the soil in which you’re planting. Mix-ing some compost into the soil might provide the added boost of nutrients needed to make your plants grow better than ever before. If it’s a vegetable garden, you may worry about adding a soil amendment with harmful chemicals mixed in; you can avoid this problem by using mushroom compost. Made from soil used to grow real, organic mushrooms, the compost can

provide key nutrients that other plants thrive on. Since mush-room compost is only used once to grow mushrooms, it con-tains plenty of leftover nutrients that vegetable gardens can use effectively. Not to mention, it’s recycling waste and aiding in the preservation of Mother Nature. Mushroom compost can also be used on your lawn to improve the quality of your soil and provide a great start to this year’s backyard adventures.

Now in our sixth year, Talking About a Home, a home show on the radio, airs every Saturday from 1-2pm on 94.3 WSC-FM and online at 943wsc.com. You may also listen to archived radio interviews on our website,

charlestonhomeanddesign.com.

TALKING ABOUT A

HOME

We asked four experts:Excerpts from our Radio Show

ASK THE EXPERTS

Beyond the obvious pros, what are some latent benefits of your product or service?

Bert Snyder of Palmetto Exterminators

“In our semi-tropical environment, homes need protection from wood-destroying organisms as well as typical pests, such as spiders, ants, fleas, ticks, and palmetto bugs. We do provide services to protect houses from these pests, but while we’re doing that, we also perform a home inspection. We find a lot of little maintenance issues, wood-destroying fungi, and plumbing or electrical problems. Many times, homeowners wouldn’t have found these issues because they’re hidden in difficult-to-reach spaces. We document everything we find and provide the information to the homeowner.”

For more information, call (843) 766-9701 or visit palmettoexterminators.net.

Frank Panezich of TeqHŌM by QEI Security and Technology

“The obvious benefit of home security is having a monitoring system available, so if something does occur at your home, you are notified immediately. The hidden benefit is peace of mind, knowing for sure that your home is protected by a quality company with good electronics (that we stand by). Energy efficiency can also be linked to a home security system. For example, when you leave your home, your system can be programmed so that the thermostat will actually turn up or down to a more cost-effective temperature.”

For more information, call (843) 797-7603 or visit teqhom.com.

Mac McCrary of Edge Solutions

“One of the biggest benefits of a geothermal system is the amount of money you’re going to save on your monthly heating and cooling bill. As soon as the unit kicks on, it’s going to reduce your bill by 60 to 70 percent. A hidden benefit is that it is extremely quiet. There’s no noisy compressor or condensing unit outside. Also, the USEPA has said that the geothermal systems are the most energy-efficient way to heat and cool your home. For every system that’s installed, it’s the equivalent of taking two cars off the road.”

For more information, call (843) 556-5526 or visit edgesolutions.us.

Jim Rouleaux of Edgewater Energy Services

“Installing solar panels to access renewable energy starts paying for itself immediately through the reduction of your utility costs. The full payback of the system usually occurs within 8 to 12 years. What’s really driving the industry and is a not-so-well-known benefit, though, is the government subsidy on the product. Currently, there is a 30-percent federal tax credit on solar-panel purchases, and here in South Carolina, a 25-percent state tax credit is available. If you’ve been thinking about solar power, it’s best to look into it sooner rather than later to reap the maximum benefits because the state tax credit may go by the wayside.”

For more information, call (843) 937-9999 or visit edgewaterenergysc.com.

Having walked job sites with his father (who owns the original AKD in Hilton Head) since he was five

years old, Thomas Lauderdale understands intimately how to run a custom-cabinet business. That, along

with his love of the Lowcountry, is why he opened his own shop in Charleston, where he offers his

well-trained eye for design and his well-maintained connections with some of the best craftsmen and

manufacturers. His talents can be seen throughout his family’s new James Island home, so take a look!

For more information, call Advanced Kitchen Designs of Charleston at (843) 225-9344 or visit akd.biz.

HOMEWORK

Ashley (with new baby Avery) and Thomas Lauderdale of Advanced Kitchen Designs of Charleston stand in front of their custom mantle and recessed bookshelves accented with champfered columns and crown moulding.

What would normally be an office off the foyer is now a perfectly feminine nursery, decorated with a sweet chandelier, pink painted ceiling, and a locally built (and designed by Thomas) custom cabinet with mullion glass doors, crystal hardware, and a hanging rod to display all of Avery’s tiny dresses.

The “Weathered Slate” stain used on the island enhances the unique grain pattern in the hickory wood and complements the “Super White” honed granite. Strategically placed transom windows allow for staggered wall cabinetry (which continues to the counter), providing appliance storage and a great finishing spot for the full-tile backsplash.

“For our two nine-year-old dogs, we designed the dog-bowl drawer. It rolls out for the dogs to eat and in when they are finished, so the bowls are not always showing,” says Thomas of the laundry room. In addition to that unique feature, the couple included a fold-up, drop-down ironing board on a swivel to efficiently utilize the space and match the cabinetry on the opposing wall.

Using only the most unique cabinetry configurations throughout the house, the master bathroom is no exception. The “Agreeable Gray” Smithport double vanity has a blend of inset and full-overlay doors with a center column resting on a four-inch granite backsplash. The square hardware and framed-in mirrors complete the contemporary look.

YOUR MONEY’S WORTH

Rich in NutrientsThe new age of cooking is upon us, and at its forefront is waterless cookware, which retains a food’s natural nutrients. It does so by creating a vapor seal between the pan and the lid, which has an ingenious edge that creates suction. Thus, vegetables can cook using their own moisture versus added water, or worse, oil. Additionally, Mark and Carlton’s line of American-made Ultra Vita Craft cookware is designed

with seven layers of super-conductive aluminum metal that is covered with two additional layers of magnetic surgical stainless steel—a material that does not react with foods or leach into foods.

Calculated RiskWith the sale of induction stoves on the rise, the need for magnetic cookware has also increased. Carlton explains the reason for this demand saying,

“Induction stoves have a safety feature—as soon as you take the magnetic pot off the range, the surface of the stove is not hot. Because the cooktop is heated only by contact with the vessel, the possibility of a burn injury is significantly reduced.” Also, while the pots are on the stove, the handles can be removed so that tiny hands will not accidentally tip them over.

Ease of UseWith All American’s cookware, zero to boil takes 90 seconds on an induction stove and under three minutes on a conventional stove, which is about half the time of traditional pots and pans. “And, lightweight stainless steel can dent and warp. So, you’re replacing the stuff over and over again, which is a hassle. We offer a True Lifetime Warranty,” Mark describes. And as far as saving goes, space is almost as coveted as money in the kitchen. The diameters of the Ultra Vita Craft pans were calculated so that they could be stacked not only during cooking, but also in the cabinet.

For more information, call The All American Kitchen and Outdoor Company at (843) 643-1394 or visit allamericancompany.com.

Carlton Walker and Mark Brandt, Co-Chairmen

Arguably, not one item in your home is used more (and more roughly) than your cookware. You heat them and cool them, scrub them with all manner of cleaning agents, and shove them into your cupboards haphazardly. Yet, people consistently purchase cheap non-stick skillets and flimsy aluminum pots. Why? The answer, like with most things, is price. However, after speaking with Mark Brandt and Carlton Walker of The All American Kitchen & Outdoor Company, we found that—yes—good cookware is expensive, but you should pony up the money upfront because it will save you (cash, calories, and concern) in the long run.

HIDDEN TREASURE

The architecture of the pre-Civil War era was created to last, as evidenced by the immaculate antebellum homes flanking the cobblestone streets of

the peninsula today. However, more delicate relics of the period have suffered disintegration over time unless they have been carefully preserved, like this 1870s United Confederate Veterans Memorial Ribbon. The pendant, depicting the rebel flag, the South Carolina state flag, and a sweetgrass palmetto tree, has been in the caring hands of a local family for generations. The family ensured that it remained intact through the years. To show it off in your home, simply frame it and place it in an office or den for a historic conversation starter. For more information, call Terrace Oaks Antique Mall at (843) 795-9689 or visit terraceoaksantiques.com.

This eight-foot long model supply ship was handcrafted in the 1940s. It features three

types of wood (mahogany, walnut, and maple) and hand-strung cotton cords that mimic the intricate ropes of the life-sized vessel. Stumbling upon the boat in an old, dusty warehouse, the antique-dealing owners believe that a carpenter from North Carolina originally fashioned it as either a hobby piece or a work of art. After a little restoration from the condition in which it was found, the ship looks as good as new. Nautical themes have been taking over Lowcountry interior design in recent years; use this supply ship to add a little seafaring charm to your mantle. For more information, call Antiques Market at (843) 849-8850.

Developed in China in the 1700s, the technique of theorem painting traveled to the western nations of England and the United States in the early 1800s.

The art form was taught to many girls in finishing school. The style of painting is unique because it employs the use of hand-cut stencils to form the separate layers of the design, which usually depicts fruit, flowers, vegetables, or a combination of these items resting in a bowl. The theorem pictured was created by Caroline Hurd in the first years of the 20th century and will give any room a touch of early American style. 8:15am Doug drives to the ReStore on Johns Island in order to check deconstruction.habitat.org. Via this website, homeowners are able to submit photographs of the large, fixed items in their home that they would like to donate. By seeing (online) the construction of the cabinetry that needs to be removed, for instance, Doug is able to estimate the time and personnel required for that particular job.

9:00am Before loading up his deconstruction tools, including crowbars and drill bits of all sizes, Doug checks in with the front desk at the ReStore to see if they have any deconstruction job referrals for him to schedule. Often, shoppers ask to donate larger items directly from the front desk.

9:55amDriving a 20-foot truck, Doug and his volunteer, John Ross, arrive at the home of a Johns Island donator. The homeowner is looking to remodel her storage building into a guesthouse. Thus, she would like Doug to remove

the dated melamine cabinetry, appliances, and plumbing fixtures.

10:25amTo determine the value of the items retrieved, Doug checks the functionality of both the stove and the refrigerator before disconnecting the power and water to the room. Then, Doug marks the appliances as checked so that ReStore shoppers will feel comfortable knowing their purchase will work when installed.

11:00amDoug and John investigate the construction of the kitchen, including how the sink is attached to the laminate countertop and how the cabinets are hung on the wall. If the two were to dismantle the kitchen improperly, they could defeat their purpose of resale.

1:10pm The two deconstructers detach and remove all of the donatable items. Once the future merchandise is loaded, Doug takes the truck to the ReStore to unload so that the items can be marked, priced, and

distributed within the “yard” (the open-air area containing the reclaimed building materials). The ReStore aims to price the items between 30 and 50 percent less than what they would sell for if they were new.

2:40pm Doug takes the afternoon to schedule walk throughs, deconstructions, and volunteers, which takes up a lot of his time since so many people with varying obligations are involved. Because Doug’s job often goes past five o’clock, he is thankful when donors and volunteers can be flexible.

3:30pm With a bit of unplanned time on his hands, Doug works in the yard, reorganizing the cabinets. Since the store is a constant revolving door of merchandise, it is important to keep the items visible and resellable, maintaining the goal of the ReStore—to generate funds to build more houses for those in need.

For more information, call Trident Habitat for Humanity at (843) 724-6900 or visit tridenthabitat.org.

Since becoming the third Habitat for Humanity affiliate in the world in 1978, Sea Island Habitat has built 300 affordable homes in the Lowcountry for those in need. In order to raise money for that mission, the charity sells donated items, ranging from artwork and furniture to toilets and granite countertops, at the ReStore. To cull the latter items, Habitat maintains a Deconstruction Division run by Doug Mackenzie, a self-appointed ‘construction detective,’ recycling proponent, and this issue’s pro on the go.

THE CRAFTSMEN:Father-Son Duo Cliff and Corey Lill of Palm Metal Designs

THE CRAFT:Cliff and Corey weld various metals and work with other raw materials to create one-of-a-kind accents, art, lighting, wrought-iron gates, and furniture pieces. When CH+D stopped by their workshop, the team was focusing on the construction of a metal-and-wood coffee table.

THE BACKSTORY: Hailing from the state of New Jersey, Cliff and Corey bring a combined 42 years of experience to their new Charleston company. The family has been in the metalworking business for four generations now; Cliff ’s grandfather, in fact, was in the copper industry decades ago. Their hand-crafted precision and keen eye for minute details make each home- accent piece they produce an inspiring work of art.

THE PROCESS: To create a table like the one pictured, Corey began with an idea. He sketched his vision onto paper and tweaked the drawing to perfection. Then, he duplicated his drawing in life-sized proportion on rosin paper. Next, Corey gathered the materials he needed: sheet metal for gussets, L-beams for the frame, natural wood for the tabletop, and rivets to hold all the pieces in place. He formed the gussets by cutting them from the sheet metal with a plasma cutter and bent them at a 90-degree angle us-ing a brake press. Then, Corey constructed the frame of the table, which involved welding the L-beams together, attaching the gussets to the cor-ners with the rivets, and torching the frame to give it a slightly psyche-delic sheen. Finally, Corey turned his attention to the wooden tabletop, which he cut, pieced together with hidden biscuit fasteners, distressed (by beating it with any available object in the shop), stained, and sealed. Once he added the wood top to the frame, the coffee table was complete and ready to find a home in a Lowcountry residence.

For more information, call Palm Metal Designs at (843) 760-5500 or visit palmmetaldesigns.com.

The Ins & Outs

She Said:Question: He Said:

of Crafting a Custom Home

He Said: I really do enjoy both types of construction: remodel-ing and starting from the ground up. I have found the main differ-ences, when looking back on all of our homes, were the relationships we formed with each of our home-owners. They were more reward-ing than anything else.

He Said: The most important aspects are the technologies within the build-ing envelope, including spray-foam insulation, dehumidification, and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. Technology has been a game changer for home performance.

He Said: Personally, I enjoy homes that contain a modern touch when it fits the surroundings appropriately. My main objective for all styles, however, is to provide the most functionality for the homeowners. In that way, I greatly appreciate the architecture in all styles of homes.

She Said: These are so different and neither is more rewarding.  What is most rewarding is a homeowner that loves his or her new (or newly remodeled) home. That is why we got into this business—to deliver a house that the homeowner wants, be it new or remodeled.

She Said: Impact-rated windows and doors are so important, es-pecially here in the Lowcountry.  Knowing that your house is pro-tected from a storm even when you are not there is priceless.

She Said: On the outside, I like wide porches, rafter tails, cottage-style win-dows, tapered columns, metal roofs—beach bungalows. On the inside, I am very contemporary. Honestly, when it comes down to it, though, I am more concerned with the trees and plants in my yard than my house.

TOP FIVE

Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes to Avoid

12

34

5

Shying Away from Bold Color ChoicesDon’t be afraid to add a burst of color to your kitchen. If you’re worried about growing tired of your choice, implement a striking hue in a less-expensive element—like paint, kitchen towels, or hardware—that can easily be replaced down the road.

Forgetting FunctionalityOver the course of a month, be particularly attentive to your habits in the kitchen and develop a design based on your observations. If you find yourself baking regularly, include a special spot for your coveted Kitch-enAid mixer. If preparing Asian food is your forte, make sure there’s enough room around your range to handle an oversized wok. Tailor the kitchen to your functions.

Putting an Island Where it Doesn’t BelongYes, islands are definitely in style. However, adding an island to a compact kitchen isn’t necessarily the best choice for optimal func-tionality because it can make the space seem cluttered. Experts rec-ommend only adding an island if your kitchen is at least eight feet deep and twelve feet long.

Skipping the BacksplashOftentimes, the backsplash becomes an afterthought in kitchen design, and remodelers find themselves at the end of their budget asking, “Do I really need to purchase all this tile?” The answer should be, “Yes!” A back-splash saves your walls from nasty grease stains that are difficult to re-move from painted surfaces. When you shop for tile, make sure you buy at least 10 percent more material than the area that you need to cover to account for pattern-matching and cuts around cabinets and appliances.

Refusing to Hire a ProfessionalWe all love a do-it-yourself project—it hones our hands-on skill set and offers a great sense of accomplishment upon completion. There is a point, though, in which a project moves beyond our own abilities, and it becomes time to hire a professional. They know how to paint a perfectly straight line, create accurate measurements for cabinet installation, and connect new pendant lights into your existing wiring layout. Sometimes, it’s simply best to sit back and let an expert take over.

A peek into products designed to weather the coastal elementsH2OME

Protecting the exterior of your home against the harsh conditions found on the

South Carolina coast is a difficult process. The durability of the siding you use

when building your home must be a top priority. New processes have emerged

that allow for a more efficient application of primer on siding. By treating the

material before it even goes to the construction site, experts like those at

Carolina Machine Finishing are able to run the lumber through machines that

apply the paint to all six sides of the board. This equals greater UV protection for

your home and a thicker, more even coating that looks better and lasts longer.

For coastal living, especially, this process can save homeowners the hassle of

repainting and re-siding.

Lighting your beautiful coastal home after the sun goes down is a necessity.

Getting an advanced outdoor lighting arrangement brings a lot of benefits

to a house near the water. The first and most obvious benefit is the style;

nothing looks better than a perfectly maintained house lit up for all to see

with dramatic lighting. Another important benefit is safety, eliminating all

the dark areas in your yard and around the house can dissuade would-

be wrong-doers from breaking and entering or trespassing. For the home

residing in the salty air, sturdy fixtures in materials such as copper or

aluminum are ideal to prevent rusting and deterioration.

The coast can be one of the most beautiful places to settle in Charleston. But

that beauty comes with a price, and it’s not just the price of the home; it’s the

toll the weather takes on the home and on the outdoor furniture purchased to

decorate that home. For items like outdoor tables, coated aluminum is a great

option because you don’t have to worry about water damage. For seating,

Sunbrella fabric stands out among the rest because the material offers fantastic

protection from the elements and is made with solution-dyed acrylics to

prevent fading. Local company Palm Casual offers such furniture with a stellar

warranty—for the life of the product, they will re-stuff the interior foam or filling.

So with spring upon us, it might be time to consider a new patio set.

Conflicting ElementsBy nature, fire and water do not mix, but in your nature, you can force them to coexist, creating a statement-worthy illusion.

BRIZO® Odin Collection free-standing tub filler

At what point did you know that building homes was the career path for you?

I realized early on that I simply enjoyed being on the job-site.  Hanging around jobsites enabled me to do my favorite thing—talk! I enjoy talking to people, not only my clients, but also my subcontractors.

What sets you apart from other builders?

That’s a tough question; there are a lot of good builders in Charleston who I have learned from and respect. I think (and hope) what sets me apart from other builders is the customer service that I give to my clients. Everyone strives to give good customer service, but I want to establish a long-lasting rela-tionship with my clients during the life of their home-building project and afterwards. I work side by side with my clients to help conceptualize their dream home and make it a reality.

Also, I have an amazing crew of people that make me success-ful. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to serve my clients the way I do. My guys are reliable and are consistent in their quality. We are a team. I rely on them to do excellent work, and they rely on me to continue giving them work.

What exciting projects do you have on the horizon or have you completed recently?

We are an approved, preferred builder in Olde Park and were chosen by a client to build a high-end custom home in that neighborhood.  We also have two building projects happen-ing on Folly River that will be complete within the next few months. Additionally, we are consistently taking on remod-eling projects—big and small. I enjoy doing renovations because they require true craftsmanship and imagination.

ARCHITECTS + ARCHETYPES

What about architecture appeals to you?

Architecture is the ultimate ex-pression of art. The process of creating architecture—dream-ing, planning, designing, and ultimately building a space or structure to reflect a client’s wishes and needs—is deeply ful-filling to me.

What makes Morris Architecture & Construction a unique firm?

The term architecture is Greek for ‘master builder.’ I am a licensed and registered architect and builder affiliated with the American Institute of Architects.

Morris Architecture is a unique firm in that we, through Morris Construction, also pro-vide building services. We see

this as a direct advantage for the owner as it tends to reduce fees and streamline the design-build process.

Did you always know that you wanted to be an architect?

I have always been an architect at heart. As a child, I was very analytical and always aware of the aesthetic. I attribute that to my travels through Europe with my mother, observing art and architecture at a very young age.

Do you have any tips for homeowners looking to choose an architect?

That’s simple. If you think hiring a professional is expen-sive, try hiring an amateur.

For more information, call Morris Architecture & Construction at (843) 577-8010 or visit morrisaandc.com.

Dissatisfied with the design work being performed in the building industry, Buz Morris (originally a contractor) entered the Architecture School at the Univer-sity of North Carolina in Charlotte. Upon winning the Design Week Competition in 1998, Buz was offered an internship position at Gwathmey Siegel & Associ-ates Architects in New York City. Work-ing directly under Charles Gwathmey for four years designing houses and commer-cial buildings for clients such as Michael Dell, Jerry Seinfeld, and the Guggenheim Museum, Buz honed his craft and pre-pared to open his own firm in Charles-ton, which he did successfully in 2004. DESIGN DILEMMA

The Dilemma:When two people with vastly different design styles make the decision to combine households, there are two options: throw out all the furniture in order to start over or develop a design that incorporates each individual’s unique pieces and tastes. This is precisely the dilemma that a Mt. Pleasant couple recently encountered; his pre-vious home in Baltimore was filled with dark, masculine antique pieces while her New York flat was garnished with light, airy furnishings.

Gigi Chapman has been devising lovely living spaces since 1979, meaning she has fostered the experience and expertise to solve any design di-lemma that arises. Born and raised in Charleston, Gigi moved away from the Palmetto State to begin her career in Mississippi. Upon her return to the Lowcountry (and after owning a successful retail store on the peninsula in the 1990s), she opened DeGuise Interiors, a full-service design studio and showroom located in I’On Square.

INDUSTRY PROFILES

Gigi Chapman of DeGuise Interiors▲

The Solution:Because many items were of sentimental value, the pair opted to merge pieces together into a new I’On home. So the homeowners called on Gigi at DeGuise to create a design that integrates both styles. She suggested that they choose several furnishings from each collection for each room and add one or two new pieces that complement both the masculine, antique style and the light, airy motif. The result is a home full of the couple’s favorite pieces that exudes a classic and sophisticated style.

PROJECT FILES

Sherri and Russ Nester, owners of local design-build firm Vintage Design, have known Paul Walker

for years; their relationship began when Paul contacted the Nesters to help design the buildings for his budding storage-unit business fifteen years ago. Upon deciding to dote upon his new wife by building her a dream home as a wedding gift, Paul knew just who to call. The team at Vintage Design worked closely with Paul and his wife, Laura, to design the home around her glamor-ous tastes and his desire for complete uniqueness. Sherri describes, “Mrs. Walker likes a lot of ‘bling,’ as she calls it, and Mr. Walker’s request, throughout the whole project, was, ‘Sherri, I want some-thing that no one else has.’” Each room in the home reflects these two desires.

Walking up to the home, guests first approach the front door, which is simply “majestic,” explains Sherri. It’s a precisely carved ma-hogany door standing ten-feet tall, stretch-ing five-feet across, and making a stunning first impression. Stepping inside, the beauty of the home becomes even more apparent in the sophisticated details gracing every room. The paint in much of the house is iridescent; it is a special, Italian metallic finish that re-flects light. In the office, the primary wall is not painted, but plated in silver to create a masculine space that blends harmoniously with the dining room across the hall. The floors (which are heated by a geothermal system) feature extra-wide eight-inch engi-neered walnut planks with custom-milled baseboards. The ceilings vary from room to room; some are barreled, some coffered, some Venetian plastered, and some hand-painted. The finishes of the floors, walls, and ceilings

are complemented by the décor, which can be described as French Regal with quite a bit of Laura’s modern bling. To pull this entire look together, the Walkers relied on the me-ticulous attention to detail provided by con-struction manager Ramin Farahvashi, who has been working on custom homes with the Nesters since 1998. The kitchen’s glamorous style is subtle and found in facets such as oversized cabinet hardware. However, Sherri designed the kitchen—first and foremost—for function-ality. Tucked behind the kitchen lies an ex-tensive pantry, which is the signature fea-ture found in many of the homes that Sherri creates. “When I have the opportunity, I design a back kitchen adjacent to the main kitchen,” says Sherri, “so that we can keep the clutter out of the entertaining space.” Russ adds, “The Walkers may throw a pool

party with fifty or sixty people, and by having the back kitchen, they can have someone pre-paring food and cleaning dishes away from the party space. The public area continues to look nice and clean—always presentable.” The kitchen is visually connected to the breakfast room and exterior by the bright-blue Venetian plaster ceiling that comple-ments the azure hues of the resort-style pool. The master bedroom also overlooks the

little slice of paradise that is the Walkers’ backyard. Each morning, the newlywed couple can wake up, press a button to open the curtains, and admire their cozy home nestled in the Lowcountry’s wide-open, un-developed landscape. v For more information, call Vintage Design at (843) 889-3200 or visit vintagedesignschas.com.

Just a few decades ago, the idea of controlling an entire house with just the push of a button was unfathomable. Today, technology is overtaking the home to make everyday living simpler than ever before.

Imagine waking up in the morning and placing your feet on the floor beside your bed, a motion that

triggers the light in your bathroom to illuminate and the television to jump to life and stream the morning news. As you walk from room to room, sen-sors automatically track your natu-ral motions so that the lights turn on when you enter and off when you exit. You cross the threshold of the kitchen to find your iPod playing your favorite Coltrane tune and your morning coffee

already brewed, waiting for you to take the first sip. This isn’t a home from a futuristic film; current technology in home automation has made these conveniences a reality. For practicality’s sake, most home-owners don’t seek to install an en-tire home-automation package all at once. Instead, many start with bits and pieces that make their day-to-day tasks more enjoyable and add more complex facets over time.

During the construction phase of their new home, two Mt. Pleasant homeown-ers, in particular, decided to make a tech-nological jump from bare-minimum to advanced automation. The couple, lack-ing knowledge about the systems and process, contacted the gurus at TeqHŌM, a new division of QEI Security and Tech-nology (a sister company of the long-standing, local business Quality Electric). TeqHŌM’s Frank Panezich describes the system installed in the Mt. Pleasant

house saying, “We started with the basic fundamentals; the customer had asked for a simple audio system to lis-ten to music throughout the whole house, and we provided that for them. We put speakers in every room, and the bedroom of each child has its own, separate audio system, allowing the kids to plug their iPhones into the wall and listen to their own music.” How-ever, as the homeowners learned more about the vast possibilities available, they decided upon TeqHŌM’s com-

plete system, which includes an adapt-able home-automation control center that allows users to access (and, in the future, expand) their homes’ techno-logical capabilities. TeqHŌM strives to provide an incredibly simple user interface so that even new-comers to home technology can easily interact with the advanced systems. Homeowners first download an app on their smart phone or iPad (systems that most people already use everyday).

From that app, they can dim the lights, reduce the volume on the television, and even lock the front door. In addition to these tasks made simple by TeqHŌM’s system, the Mt. Pleas-ant homeowners can also manage their home security system. Frank explains that TeqHŌM installs the devices and monitors residences through their home-security division. This provides homeowners with peace of mind, know-ing that they can switch their alarm

The home’s lighting and sound systems are controlled by sleek panels on the wall. While the new owners learn the different controls, TeqHŌM places temporary tags on the buttons; later, they will be engraved with the correct labels. system off and on with the tap of the finger on their iPad screen, view sur-veillance footage of their home, and quickly call for help if they’re ever in a pinch. The two Mt. Pleasant homeowners didn’t know the creative technol-ogy options in store for them before they began researching and work-ing with TeqHŌM. Now, the ease with which they interact with the different elements of their house is beyond what they could have ever imagined. Perhaps, given a little more time, the family’s entire home

will be automated and tailored to re-act to their natural movements and daily routines. v For more information, call TeqHŌM by QEI Security and Technology at (843) 797-7603 or visit teqhom.com.

Sullivan’s Island home-building businesses Sea Island Builders and Herlong and Associates partnered successfully for a dramatic Wild Dunes remodel.

As any custom-home owner knows, a newly constructed house is only as good as the

team that built it. The ability to com-municate details, share work effi-ciently without overlap, and (let’s be honest) get along, are all important to the success of a project. So, one of the most reputable architect firms

paired with one of the hardest work-ing builders in town does not always guarantee a match made in heaven. In the case of Barbara and Nick San-tella’s Wild Dunes remodel, how-ever, the stars aligned when Sea Island Builders and Herlong and Associates were chosen. Together

they produced an amazing result. Of the partnership, Jeff Mathis of Sea Island Builders describes, “When a homeowner decides to invest in an all-in-one design firm, like Herlong and Associates, the homebuilding process is really a lot easier not only for the homeowner, but also for us.” Theresa Bishopp, interior designer

for Herlong and Associates, adds, “We love working with Sea Island Build-ers. One of the reasons we like them so much is because they will commit the resources—time and manpower. Both firms are very much team focused.” Starting with a great team as the foundation, Sea Island Builders

transformed the look of the home by bringing down dated dividing walls, adding 450 square feet, and gener-ally beautifying every surface of the home. “We touched every square inch of the home,” says Jeff. “Every-thing inside was completely redone. The trim package is extensive. Every room has a lot of wood, including

high wainscots, v-groove, and shi-plap on the walls and walnut on the floors.” Of course, the fact that the homeowners (with the help of The-resa and her coworkers Heather Al-lison and Sarah Rolfes) chose some truly distinct finishes helped make the home stand out. Most of the hard-ware was custom designed by Fox-

So much of the home was changed, in fact, that the result is almost unrecognizable. “We literally took this house down to the studs,” Jeff explains. “It’s a huge under-taking when you do a renova-tion to this extent. Builder Scott Hyland of Hyland Construction and Design was tasked with the job of expand-

ing and modernizing a 1978 Isle of Palms residence. On his to-do list was raising the home six feet, moving the entry, in-corporating additions to both sides of the structure, and making the space as efficient as possible with a combination of traditional fiberglass batt and closed-cell spray foam insulations. “Spray foam insulation is a two-part in-sulation that is made up of polyol resin and isocyanate,” explains Brian Hopkins of Ecofoam Insulation and Coatings, the

local company that Scott chose to work with on this project. “Those two compo-nents come out of our large rig and mix at the tip of our applicators’ guns. And when they’ve mixed, we’ve created an expand-ing, hardening foam. Closed-cell spray foam is a dense product that is moisture and mildew resistant. It even adds some rigid strength inside the structure.” For this remodel, there were two rea-sons why Scott chose to use the adapt-able, money-saving product. First, homes built before efficiency stan-dards were implemented, like this Lowcountry example, notoriously leak

heat in the winter and conditioned air in the summer. Spray foam closes those escape points, saving the home-owner from exorbitant energy bills. For the second reason, Scott details, “Some of the existing framing in the roof lines was not suitable for stan-dard insulation. Using spray foam, you can get a two-inch-thick insula-tion into a space that R30 [standard] batt would not fit. We were able to use the existing framing, which saved the customer a lot of money on the overall project.” For both of these reasons, Scott and the homeown-

Homeowners undergoing a large-scale remodel chose to update not only the look, but also the efficiency of their home.

ers chose spray foam in general and Ecofoam in specific. Ecofoam Insulation and Coatings first started in the Savannah area by owner Tara Davis. Since then, they’ve branched out all over the Southeast because of the increased demand for spray foam (in reaction to new building codes). Ad-ditionally, contractors appreciate that Ecofoam maintains a one-on-one rela-tionship with the manufacturer of the spray foam, which is highly unusual and helpful in cases of malfunctioning equipment and challenging applica-tion sites. Relationships like these only help the homeowner in the long run. “It’s been a great project to be involved with. It was a bear, but we got it done,” says Brian. The pair looks forward to working with each other again on an upcoming home—perhaps, they joke, a project that’s a hair more straightforward than this extensive remodel. v For more information, call Ecofoam Insulation and Coatings at (843) 645-2300 or visit ecofoaminsulations.com.

Homeowner Kim Lapin envisioned her bare backyard as an oasis, including multiple entertaining areas; she found her solution in one well-rounded home professional, Mandi Baldwin of Alaglas Pools, who has her hands in everything from design and construction to installation.

To buy a house is financially con-stricting to begin with, but to fully landscape and develop your

backyard on top of buying a house can be downright time consuming, overwhelm-ing, and expensive. While some people suggest rolling all of these extra ameni-ties into the mortgage, homeowner Kim Lapin was pleased that she waited to put

her full attention on the backyard after living in her house for awhile. And, she had no problems making the additions look as though they had been part of the design from the start. There to help her through the back-yard transformation was Mandi Baldwin of Alaglas Pools of Charles-

ton. “We had talked to several dif-ferent pool companies, and I liked Mandi and Ken,” says Kim of the husband-and-wife team at Alaglas. “I felt comfortable with them, like it was the right fit for us.” Together, Kim and Mandi chose the pool-and-spa configuration, coping material, decking style, and fire-pit placement.

“We offer fiberglass pools, but we can customize the look with any tile—glass or ceramic,” explains Mandi. “The big thing is that the person has to have a vision. Pictures always help to show exactly what he or she wants.” For this project, Kim certainly had a vision, adding, “The word I kept using was oasis.”

The team drew up a plan that included a 14-by-32-inch saltwater pool in a free-form shape with a round hot tub tucked into the concave curve. “We added ce-ramic tiles to the pool, which tie into Kim’s house, her furniture, and her cop-ing,” states Mandi. “We did a paver cop-ing all around the edge to pull the look from the existing home’s exterior.” It took some

time to find everything that matched perfectly, the brick being a particu-lar challenge. Kim was actually able to locate the type of brick used on the home (built a few years back) from the builder. “We like to take control of the project so that everything gets done,” Mandi states, referring to not only the installation of

the pool, firepit, and decking, but also the construction of the fiberglass pool itself, which takes place in South Caro-lina by Alaglas. “We build about 30 pools in different shapes and sizes in a con-trolled environment,” says Mandi. “We encourage homeowners to check out their pool being made if they want to.” After conception, design, and implementation, Kim and Mandi

were able to create multiple differ-ent entertaining areas that extend seamlessly from the back of the home. Kim attributes the success to Alaglas’s ability to handle all aspects of a backyard makeover. v

Teaming with over 50 national and local companies, Smith’s Heating and Air contributed to the creation of a totally mortgage-free home for one disabled soldier and his loving family.

Heart Warming

Operation Finally Home is a non-profit organization that strives to provide completely free cus-

tom homes for wounded or disabled sol-diers returning from war. Last year, the organization chose to honor Lowcountry soldier Robert Wright by constructing a home in Ladson for him and his family. Local establishment Smith’s Heating and Air felt honored to be chosen by builder Pulte Homes to install the HVAC unit at the Wrights’ new residence. Ed Young, owner of Smith’s, recounts, “Pulte con-

tacted us for the Operation Finally Home house because we do all of their work in this area. They asked us to do-nate the materials, the ductwork, and the unit, and we were happy to do it.” The specific unit was chosen to meet the two most important needs of the consumer—year-round comfort and an affordable electric bill. Ed calculated the Manual J, which is a formula used to determine the appropriate HVAC unit size for a partic-ular structure. The calculation accounts for the quality of insulation, window sizes, heat produced by kitchen appli-

ances and lighting, square footage of the home, and many other factors. To match the Manual J calculation, Ed installed a Lennox unit in the home with a 15 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rat-ing), which is a number that determines the efficiency of a HVAC unit. (Hint: A higher SEER number equals greater effi-ciency and lower operation costs. SEER ratings reach up to the mid-20s, and a basic HVAC unit is 13 SEER.) Ed chose this Lennox system for his positive opin-ion of the brand and the system’s abil-ity to keep the Wrights warm and cozy

(or nice and cool, depending upon the season) at an affordable cost. Beyond the technical heating and air sys-tem, the Wright family’s needs were of utmost importance in the entire design of the home. “They basically tailored the house to my medical needs and the desires of the kids and my wife, Bethany,” explains Robert. The home was constructed not only to fulfill immediate wishes—includ-ing a room for each of the family’s four children and an intercom system to allow for conversation between rooms—but also to provide function into the future. For example, if Robert’s disability progresses and causes him to be wheelchair bound, the whole home is already designed to become handicap accessible. Of the fam-

ily’s amazing experience with Operation Finally Home, Bethany gratefully re-marks, “We are so incredibly thankful for our home. This is the first project that Operation Finally Home has done in the state of South Carolina, and we are hum-bled that our family was chosen for it.” Robert and Bethany, with the help of so many local contractors and Opera-tion Finally Home, can rest comfortably knowing that many of their family’s basic needs, such as shelter and warmth, have been met with excellence. v For more information, call Smith’s Heating and Air Conditioning at (843) 552-3772 or visit smithshvac.com.

Nowadays, Frank wears some iteration of slacks, a dress shirt, and a tie—the costume of bankers,

airlines to let him fly thousands of miles in a cockpit jump seat for free and prompted

a Georgia hospital to hire him to manage a team of medical interns. He did this simply with

his conversational ease, phony credentials, and the (appropriate) clothes on his back. At

the age of 65, Frank has lived more than half of his life—after his antics and subsequent

years in prison—lecturing extensively for the FBI Academy and financial institutions, yet

he is still referred to as the world’s greatest con man. I eagerly sat down with Frank in his

handsome wood-clad study on Daniel Island to answer a nagging question that I had formed

upon reading about him: Is Frank a wolf in a sheep’s suit? Or, to put it another way, is Frank

playing a well-crafted role as Frank Abagnale, the reformed authority on forgery?

Like Aesop’s fable suggests, I believe one’s nature does eventually betray itself. After speaking

with him about his close-knit family, his and his wife’s vision for their custom home, and his 35 years

of developing strategies and technologies to defeat impending threats on personal and financial

security, I realized that he already divulged his nature—a long time ago. Frank is a genuinely benevolent

guy, and a dapper one at that.

You’ve been called the world’s great-est con man, the Skywayman, a con-fidence trickster, and an opportunist. How would you describe yourself ?

I think of myself as very much an oppor-tunist. I was extremely creative. I saw things that other people didn’t see. And, certainly, I could think out of the box. Now, I have been teaching FBI agents for 30 years how to think outside of the box.

But the word opportunist has a nega-tive connotation, literally meaning “someone who tries to get an advan-tage or something valuable from a

situation without thinking about what is fair or right.” Don’t you want to dis-tance yourself from that perception?

The word shouldn’t have a negative con-notation. It should mean simply seeing things that other people don’t and act-ing on those observations. A good ex-ample of that is when I boarded a plane one time posing as a pilot. I was sitting in the cockpit, and the captain turned around and said, “The tower asked me to see your pilot’s license.” I’d never been asked that. So, I very quickly re-plied, “You know what, I put that in my checked flight bag.” So then I thought,

I need to get a pilot’s license, but how do I do that? About that same time, I was read-ing a flying magazine, and in the maga-zine was an ad that said that you could take your pilot’s license and make it into a plaque on the wall. It would be a metal plaque with black letters, velvet around it, and a wood frame. All you had to do is send them the information from your license. Sure enough, two weeks later, here comes this plaque in the mail. Then, I went down to this print shop in Manhattan, and I said to the guy, “This is my pilot’s license, but I’d like to carry it in my wallet like some people do with their college diploma. Is there any way that you could shoot this

down and print it?” It turned out looking like an exact replica of a license. That was the kind of thing that no one thought of.

Most people have heard of your story, read your book, seen Catch Me If You Can, or even watched the musical, but tell us another story about the ingenu-ity that you had as an impostor.

When I started going overseas, I couldn’t get a passport because the government was looking for me. So, I was talking to this flight attendant. (I learned so much just from hav-ing conversations with people.) I just

happened to say, “You know, I only fly domestically. When you guys go overseas, how do you go in and out of all the airports? Do they keep stamping your passports?” She answered, “No, we have an international crew card.” It was basically a business card that folded. The front was red with the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] logo, and on the inside was a stapled passport picture. It said crew member, the airline, and an ID number. So, I easily replicated

that, and that is why the feds couldn’t figure how I was getting in and out of all of those countries without a passport. That really bothered them.

It is amazing that you got away with all that you did. But, why? Why lie to everyone around you?

I ran away from home in the ’60s when I was 16 years old. I ended up in New York City. I had no money—nothing. I had written some checks, and at first, I had the money in the accounts to cover it. But then, the money ran out, and I found that it was really easy for me to keep writing checks. I always thought that it started for me as a way to survive. Then, people starting chasing me because I was writ-ing bad checks and I was a runaway. It

became about me staying one step ahead of the people who were chasing me. Ulti-mately, in the end, I think it was a game.

Did it bother you morally that things you were doing were illegal? And if not, weren’t you worried for your safety?

No matter how much I pretended to be older, in reality, I was just a kid. I looked at everything through the eyes of an ado-

lescent. I had no fear. It was like driving down the interstate at 100 miles an hour. I wasn’t thinking of the consequences. Once, I went into Chase Manhattan Bank and cashed a 500-dollar check, being an adolescent, I justified it by thinking, Well, this is a multi-billion-dollar compa-ny, and my 500 dollars isn’t going to hurt this bank. What was funny, though, is if I had walked into a dry-cleaning store at that time and saw a cash-register drawer

open, I would never have touched that money. In my mind, that was stealing. I was brought up in a very strict Catholic family and went to Catholic school. I was given all the right tools: character and ethics.

That, and the love of a good woman, is eventually what saved you, isn’t it?

I have to be honest with you. When the government came to me and said, “We’re going to take you out of prison,” I didn’t say, “Well, I am done with this crime.” Prison didn’t do anything but hold me there a few years to keep me off the streets. I was not rehabilitated. I wasn’t born again. I didn’t have any religious awakening. And then I met Kelly, and I fell in love with her. I asked her to marry me. I didn’t have a dime to my name, so I had nothing to offer her. She married me against the wishes of her par-ents. She gave me three beautiful sons, and that is really what changed my life.

You have a very frank way of speaking about your family that is refreshing. Do you think that you are able to appreciate your family this way because of your lack of honest relationships when you were on the run and your parents’ divorce, the impetus for your running away?

No matter what anybody tells you, divorce is a very devastating thing. I knew that when I married Kelly, it would never enter my mind to get divorced. It would never enter my mind to put my children through what I went through. I knew that from day one. I knew the im-portance of having a family and keeping that family together.

I live to make my wife happy every-day, and I live to take care of my kids. I do a lot of things for my kids, but they are great kids. People say that I spoil them. I do it because I love them.

I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I don’t play golf. If I have to spend money, I spend money on my kids. Really, in life, all you have is your family. Kelly and I talk about it all the time. I know that if tomorrow we didn’t have a dime, my wife and I could move into an apartment somewhere and we’d be just as happy. I tell my kids, “Having money gives you options, but it doesn’t bring you happiness. Happiness is something that you make for yourself.”

Well, at least for now, you don’t live in an apartment. You live in a beau-tiful home on Daniel Island that is filled with family photos and nostalgic tokens. What made you choose those items for decoration? I’m not the type to have a lot of art. I’d rather have pictures of my children and my grandchildren. They are the focal point of my life. Even though they’ve grown up now and have their own fami-

lies, they are still the most important things in my life. I like to be able to turn the corner and see them.

And what about all the clocks?

My wife has always had interesting clocks. There are five grandfather clocks in the house and six or seven cuckoo clocks (all are from Germa-ny). And that is not to mention all the little clocks! She also knows how to take care of them. Her cuckoo clocks are intricate, and she can get into them and fix them. She enjoys doing that. I told her, though, we can’t buy any more clocks because we have no more room for any of them. When we were envisioning this house, while it was being built, I kept thinking, Where are all these clocks going to go? And yet, it worked out perfectly,

especially with the entrance and the two grandfather clocks.

Tell me about the process of building this house.

When we decided to move out to Daniel Island, the last thing I wanted to do was build a home. But, the ones that were for sale didn’t interest me. I had seen two or three homes that I liked, and they were all built by Carson Homes. I went by the office, and Chris Carson welcomed me in. He said, “I really don’t build spec homes, but I can build a home for you.” I said, “No, I’m not interested in building a home, but you build beautiful houses. I hope I can buy a house that you built that someone is selling.” Then, he said, “Well, by the way, I’m building a house. It’s just in framing.” My wife and I went by, and we were just stunned by the unique de-

sign of it. He eventually agreed to sell it to me. Funny thing is, he was actually building it for himself originally.

It really seems to fit you and Kelly, both aesthetically and functionally. What are your favorite parts of the home?

I like that the master suite is so separated. All my grandkids can be on one side, and you can’t hear a thing in the master. And if you are older, you don’t have to worry about going upstairs because the master is downstairs. It’s almost like a compound. I know a lot of people that see it from the outside think it is one big house, so they say, “Man, your house is huge!” I say, “No. It’s all hollow in the middle.” It does give a great street presence.

I’m also somebody who loves good crafts-manship: crown moulding, bookcases,

(left page) The narrowness of the home can be seen especially in the dining room, which shows clearly the Abagnales’ penchant for traditional furniture and grandfather clocks. (above) The family room is a veritable Where’s Waldo of nostalgic accents, including FBI Challenge Coins, family photos, and copies of Frank’s tell-all book, Catch Me If You Can, in 35 different languages.

and things that are very unique and take a great bit of skill. I lived downtown in a four-million-dollar, beautifully restored home built in 1784. This house was not near the cost of that house, and it has better craftsmanship and quality. Plus, it’s a much more updated, modern home.

You lived downtown? But you’re not originally from this area. How did you find yourself in downtown Charleston?

I raised my children in the house we lived in for 25 years in Tulsa, Oklaho-ma. We remodeled it several times. It was a great house on a lot of property, which was landscaped beautifully. I never thought I would move. I thought

that that was the house I’d die in. I was very attached to my house, but my wife always wanted to live in downtown Charleston. I said to her, “I’ll give it a try, but I don’t know that I’ll want to stay.” I’m not an urban person. I get my relax-ation by washing my car and working in the yard. You can’t wash a car or work on the yard downtown.

So, is that what made you eventually choose Daniel Island?

I like that Daniel Island is kind of secured. It is away from everything, but you’re still close to Charleston. It has a sense of com-munity. When you come out here, there are kids all over the street. We like having

children around. You know, I don’t want to be in a retirement community. And here, there are people who still work for a living. When we were downtown, it was very hard dealing with all those multi-millionaires. They’d say, “Well, let’s go do something [in the middle of the week].” And I’d say, “You know, I have a job. I have go to work and make a living.”

I have to ask about that living. You are obviously doing well financially, being able to live in this beautiful house. And you’re clearly not still writing bad checks, having consulted for 35 years with the FBI in fraud prevention. How have you been able to capitalize on your experiences?

116 CH+D • Spring 2014

After serving 4 years of a 12-year sen-tence for my crimes, the government told me that they were willing to take me out of prison early on the condition that I work for an agency of the federal government for the remainder of my sentence or until my parole was satisfactorily completed. Needless to say, they did not compensate me. They said that I needed to find a job and live in Houston, Texas. My first job was with Pizza Inn. Then, I drove a bus from the airport to downtown. Then, I worked for a grocery store as a stock boy.

But, once I started working with the gov-ernment, I realized that they didn’t know about how fraud worked. And I thought, Well if these people are federal agents, people with Harvard law degrees, and CPAs, and they don’t know it, what does the guy on the street or a banker know?

So, you share the lessons that you learned as a paperhanger with the very institutions that you defrauded?

Yes. I work for a number of companies on retainer and many on a fee-for-service basis. On the retainer side, one of my clients is LexisNexis. I work for the government division in their risk-management area. I deal with all of the crimes committed against any gov-ernment agency, be it federal, county, state, or city. I help LexisNexis develop technologies to, for example, be able to authenticate who is applying for a benefit. In the first quarter of last year, I saved them 11 million dollars in pay-ments they would have made. By the end of the year, they saved 30 million dollars on software that cost less than a million dollars.

You’re also an avid speaker.

Most of the speaking is for banks. I just finished a two-year tour for US Bank, one year for all their Fortune 500 customers and the other year for all their small-busi-ness customers. They’ll have a breakfast,

and I’ll put on a three-hour PowerPoint presentation that covers everything from embezzlement and check forgery to credit card fraud and identity theft—all of the things that companies are worried about. The other speaking that I do is all keynote, where organizations want me to talk about my life. I am very popular on college campuses. [laughs]

Speaking of retelling your past, how did you explain yourself to your sons?

When my oldest boy, Scott, was ten, he was a very avid reader. I walked into his room one night and handed him the book, Catch Me If You Can, and I said, “I’d like for you to read this book, but I don’t want you to ask me any questions about it until you finish reading it.” He read it in a couple of days and brought the book back to me. I said, “Do you understand that I am the person in the book that they are talking about and that I did those things? And, do you under-stand what I do today?” And that was all

there was to it. My three sons have always just looked at me as their dad. When people ask them, they say, “I judge my dad based on how he treats my mother and how he treats us.” When Scott became an FBI agent, I could not have been more proud.

I’ve read that you have paid back all that you stole. Did you do that in order to prove to others, including your sons, that you are honorable?

When I started to make money, I felt that my three sons would expect me to pay it back. I was convicted on 2.5 million dol-lars worth of bad checks. I had no way to spend all of that money. I was just a kid. I would put money in safe-deposit boxes. When I was caught, they recovered two million from those safe-deposit boxes. So, there were only about 500,000 dol-lars that was never recovered. The judge did not order restitution. So, I had no le-gal obligation to pay it back. It was about doing the right thing because of my sons.

If I might ask, how did you pay it back?

I had to hire a law firm. They went back and researched all of the documents. They would write to a lot of hotels. Inter-estingly, a lot of them would write back and say that they had no records of it or that their insurance company reim-bursed them for that fraud. The only one I didn’t try to pay back was the hooker. [laughs]

After all that you do for the government and financial institutions, do you still encounter people who don’t believe that you are a changed man or, at least, that you have redeemed yourself ?

There will always be people who say, “Well, that guy is still a con man. He’s just found a legal way to do what he does.” That’s one of the things that is very disheartening, but I had to learn to live with that reputation. When I go out to colleges to speak, I tell young people not

to put those burdens in their lives. I say, “People tell you all of your life that life is short, but the truth is that life is very long. So, when you mistreat someone, deceive someone, cheat on someone, or do something illegal, you have to live with that for the rest of your life.” I al-ways have to live with my mistakes and if I don’t, people will remind me all the time of them. But, I understand why I have that burden. I made that burden. ✈

Oftentimes, homeowners are faced with the question, “Will I be able to remain in my house as I grow older?” A practical

addition to a home, such as an elevator or a stairlift, can allow aging or wheelchair-bound individuals to live and travel safely within their house without undergoing an extensive remodeling project or relocating

to a single-story home.

ulti-level waterfalls flow freely into this unique creation, cultivating a resort atmosphere within what was once a typical backyard. Flanking the entrance are two well-appointed planting beds, which make the pool feel nestled rather than obtrusive. Truly the gem of the yard, this pool is not only a great conversation piece, but also the perfect backdrop for an opulent party. Blue Haven Pools • (843) 552-6000 • bluehavensc.com

his pool has features, features, and more features. Not to be confused with simply a place to soak, it boasts an incorporated hot tub, a small sun deck, an 800-gallon-per-minute swim jet (for serious lappers), and four aesthetic deck jets. And for the absentee homeowner, this pool is equipped with an automatic cover and an in-floor cleaning system that removes 99 percent of dirt and debris. his "Baron" free-form fiberglass pool shows what an incredible outdoor space one can create within the confines of pool prefabrication. With standard contoured seating and a customized Topaz gel-coat finish, this pool has a custom feel without the price. And, to accentuate the new addition, marble was chosen for the coping and irregularly shaped travertine was selected for the decking. Alaglas of Charleston • (843) 789-9469 • alaglasofcharleston.com

his raised pool platform reflects the perfect symmetry of the traditional home. Right out of the back door sits a spa with a grand spillway water feature, which highlights the multi-colored travertine tile accenting the water line of the 15-by-30-foot pool. A Look at Bathroom Décor as an Expression of Distinct Personality

A s anyone who has lived under the same roof with

multiple family members knows, personalities can clash. Each person has his or her own style of communicating, cleaning, dressing, and decorating, yet a home needs to look cohesive. We matched some of the Lowcountry’s best products to theoretical family members who have very different visions of what makes a beautiful bathroom. We think you’ll find that with some superior materials and furnishings, everyone can get their way—quite a rare occurrence in a bustling family.

Stressless® is proudly endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association.

There are many reasons why Stressless® is the most comfortable line of furniture in

existence. We could tell you how each recliner, sofa and home theater piece is innova-

tively designed, in Norway, from the inside out for unmatched comfort. Or that our

recliners come in multiple sizes to t all body types. We could also mention Stressless®

is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association. But none of these things

adequately conveys what the Stressless® line is capable of. There is only one way

to understand the feeling of total and utter luxury. You have to sit in

one. Then you will know what Stressless® living truly is: the perfect

fusion of support, beauty and function. Because when it comes

to comfort, we are uncompromising.

When you’re creating a room,

choose a specific item that you

love, such as an art print or a

throw pillow. Then, pull a color

scheme from that item to dictate the

design of the rest of the space.

Painting the ceiling adds

dimension to a space.

Darker colors make the

room seem shorter,

while lighter hues add height.

Rooms with soaring ceilings can be difficult to

design, but installing the appropriate drapery—

that is a bold color and slightly oversized—can

create the ideal focal point.

If you’re mixing older pieces into a new design, restore

them to tip-top shape. A trick for stretched or dented

leather furniture? Place the piece in the sunshine for a

few hours. The material will become taut once more.

White Room Challenge

Subtle, understated tones fill this modern living room space, and a zebra-print ottoman provides a comfortable place to rest your feet whether you’re sitting on the stark white chair or the chic charcoal couch. Everything about this room screams upscale style and runway fashion.

Crimson walls accentuated by warm lighting and deep-toned accessories embrace the guests of this room by Jane and Megan. The fantastic classical wooden dresser props up a unique lamp, giving the room a feel of classiness. The contrast of the black pillows on the white sofa blends perfectly with this modern-and-classical crossover room.

The White Room Challenge, displayed at the eleventh annual Charleston Home + Design Show, featured six seasoned designers from Ethan Allen—Lydia Gieczys, Bill Goudelock, Kathy Evans, Susan Medaglia, Jane Neal, and Megan Bryan—who each gave his or her space an inspired design in just 12 hours! The idea of the White Room Challenge originally came from HGTV’s show Design Star, where various designers from around the world transform a bare “box” with the hope of winning the judges’ votes for the best room.

White Room Challenge

Excitement and originality fill this colorful expression from Kathy and Susan. Highlighted by the bright yellow pillows on the couch and the teal chair, this room is brought to life by the brilliant use of lime green paint on the walls; it grabs the eye and gives off an air of fun that welcomes people into the living space.

Masculinity and comfort are the key features of this reader’s utopia designed by Bill. The tall, modern, black bookcase fits impeccably with the deep purple wall color. The space urges passersby to relax with a good book and pass the time in style. The tripod lamp maintains the modern look and is perfectly situated to shine upon the latest detective story or political thriller that has captured the lounger’s attention.

Room C Room DBill Goudelock, Interior Designer

Kathy Evans, Allied ASID and Susan Medaglia, Design Consulant

Unlike HGTV, CH+D paired each room with a local non-profit organization (The Citadel’s Mascots Boo X and General II, Pet Helpers, The Citadel’s Brigadier Scholarship Program, and RememberThose.org) with the aim to donate 500 dollars to every non-profit involved and a bonus to the organization associated with the winning room.

With over 1,000 votes, the winning White Room Challenge designers were Kathy Evans and Susan Medaglia (Room C), and the winning charity was RememberThose.org.

All of the rugs, chairs, couches, paintings, and decorative accessories that are seen in the White Room Challenge

can be found at Ethan Allen store locations or online. To find out more about Ethan Allen or any of the local vendors involved in the White Room Challenge, you can visit the following websites:

SUMMERVILLE—Replicating the natural beau-ty of wood, All About Garage Doors’s new steel Carriage House door has the look that is in

style and the strength that is required. Robert Gatch, owner of All About Garage Doors, chose to add the door to his product line as a cheaper option (over a tradi-tional wood-sided garage door). Also, he appreciated the door’s galvanized-steel, wide-body hinges for their ability to add stability—an important feature here in the hurricane-prone Lowcountry.

For more information, call All About Garage Doors at (843) 832-4304 or visit aagdcharleston.com.

CHARESTON—Three established home-improvement companies— Plugs Appliance Center, Jilco

Kitchen and Bath, and HWC Custom Cabi-netry—opened new or newly remodeled showrooms in the Lowcountry. Now servic-ing all sides of the Charleston peninsula, Plugs has one showroom in West Ashley and just opened a second one is Mt. Pleas-ant. Promising the biggest selection and best service, it’s no wonder they’re expanding to meet demand. Jilco’s updated showroom, located conveniently for Daniel Island resi-dents on Clements Ferry Road, offers more kitchen vignettes than ever so that home-owners can better envision the options avail-able. Relocating their showroom just blocks

up Dorchester in North Charleston, HWC has expanded their operation three fold; their showroom is larger, but more importantly, their production area now has space for the influx of Murphy wall-bed orders.

For more information, check out plugsappliance.com, jilcokitchenandbath.com, and hwccustomcabinetry.com.

MT. PLEASANT—Licensed South Carolina home-builder and general contractor Bruce Olson started Lowcountry Custom Pool and Spa 20 years ago this

year with a vision to become one of Charleston’s leading outdoor- living construction businesses. He has certainly achieved that goal by offering not only custom pools (as his company’s name suggests), but also pool houses, outdoor kitchens, fences, and hardscapes—90 percent of which is created in house versus using subcontractors like many other pool companies. In celebration of this two-decade success, Bruce is offering one month of free pool cleaning for every new client who’d like to try his company’s ser-vice. Congratulations Bruce and the team at Lowcountry Custom Pool and Spa!

For more information, call Lowcountry Custom Pool and Spa at (843) 886-8988 or visit lowcountrycustompoolandspa.com.

WEST ASHLEY— With building codes becom-

ing stricter and stricter in order to protect homes from hurricane related wind damage, Muhler is proud to announce that their Storm-Stud Window Systems, which were developed by Henry Hay (the owner of Muhler), fulfill the requirements of the code and, when installed, achieve a clean, finished look for both the interior and exterior of the house. A Storm Stud System is an easy-to-roll-up, translucent fabric that can be carried under one arm but will protect a home from damaging hurricane winds and rain.

For more information, call Muhler at (843) 572-9727 or visit muhler.com.

MT. PLEASANT—Houzz.com, the leading plat-

form for home remodeling and design, announced the community’s picks for Best Of Houzz 2014, a distinction given to companies with high quantity and quality client reviews. Local pool and spa company Atkinson won the Customer Satisfaction award, making them recipients for the second consecu-tive year. “We are very humbled and proud to be honored with this award,” said Josh Atkinson of Atkinson Pools and Spas. “Our clients’ testimonials are paramount to our success, so we want to thank them not only for their business, but also for their kind words and referrals.” Congratulations, Atkinson Pools and Spas for your im-pressive involvement in Houzz and the consistent rec-ognition of your hard work.

For more information, call Atkinson Pools and Spas at (843) 881-3068 or visit atkinsonpools.com.

CH A R L E S T O N —“Home repairs and improvements may

not always happen at the most convenient times; of-fering a project financing solution is important,” says Trey Strock of Strock En-terprises. Proudly Trey and his team are now providing clients with same-as-cash and zero-interest loans through EnerBank for amounts between $1,000 and $45,000. Now, homeowners can respond to safety concerns and unexpected repairs in a timely manner, which will not only increase the structure’s value, but also the owner’s enjoyment of the home. It’s a win-win!

For more information, call Strock Enterprises at (843) 566-0250 or visit strockenterprises.com.

MT. PLEASANT—As charitable examples of the

Mosquito Squad’s interest in protecting animals, the com-pany recently sponsored dog-gy-waste bags at the Daniel Island dog park and partici-pated in a food drive for the Animal Society. A lover of animals, Lowcountry Mosquito Squad owner Mary Anna Lewis was happy to help. Her business will continue this interest in animals by adding a “pet package” to the list of add-on treatments for this upcoming bug season. The pet package prevents ticks and fleas in addition to the mosquito barrier treatment, which is the foundation of the company’s services. With commu-nity outreach of this kind combined with their incredible service, it’s no surprise that Mosquito Squad of the Low-country has won sales awards in 2012 and 2013 out of the franchise’s nationwide network of dealers.

For more information, call Mosquito Squad at (843) 884-8661 or visit lowcountry.mosquitosquad.com.

With 60 taps through-out the build-ing—24 of them

located behind the bar, 8 placed within the 2 communal tap ta-bles, and the remaining laid out like a candy shop for hop lovers on the “beer wall”—the Bier-garten opening just blocks from the CH+D office was a pleas-ant treat for us. The selection of beers is great for those on the CH+D team who like bold brews. (Though, they do have a full bar for those who’ve had a harder day than others.) To be clear, our palates appreciate some suds af-

ter work, but primarily we were there for the Maple-Jerk Pig Wings and Smoked Southern Cheese Freaky Fries. What can I say? They’re embarrassingly good. Hitting it out of the park, Bay Street Biergarten is packed most nights of the week, so we’re excited to announce that they’ll now be open for lunch Thurs-day through Sunday every week. Prost!

History Lesson

All of the 100-year-old leadlights (windows made of small glass sup-ported by lead dividers) needed to be recamed (resoldered) in order to maintain their strength. Lead, over time, becomes soft and flexible, which increases the risk of breakage.

Once that was complete, the homeowner approached Coralberry Cottage, a local home-furnishing store run by architect and custom- furniture-aficionado Liz Baker (and co-owner Melissa Hempstead). Liz was chosen for her proven ability to design and her connections with some of the finest woodworking craftsmen in the South.

Together, the homeowners and Liz decided on the dimensions, the paint (distressed Benjamin Moore “High Park” to match the yellow tone of the glass), and a very functional pull-out-and-swivel televi-sion support so that the couple could watch a program while they cooked in the adjacent kitchen.

Immediately upon completing the design, Liz knew that Mark White, one of Coralberry Cottage’s custom woodworkers, would be perfect for the job due to his style and attention to detail. So, Coralberry Cottage personally drove the glass down to Mark’s shop in Georgia so that he could measure the panels himself.

Mark and his wife delivered the media cabinet in four separate pieces so that it could be assembled and leveled on site. Additionally, the team attached all the doors (accentuated with seeded glass and crystal knobs). In the end, Mark pronounced that after 18 years of woodworking, this was his favorite piece because of the opportunity to preserve history.

For more information, call Coralberry Cottage at (843) 884-2225 or visit coralberrycottage.com.

To earn free passage to the New World, Gottlieb Rencher became the

doctor on the RMS Carpathia. As many might recall, the Carpathia

was the vessel that rescued all of the surviving passengers from the

capsized Titanic on April 15, 1912. After such events, Gottlieb—known

most notably for his taking care of recently widowed Mrs. Astor aboard

the ship—moved to Huntington, New York where he displayed in his

home items that he brought from Europe in the hold of the Carpathia. These items included a marble lamp and a selection of over 15 panes of

Austrian stained glass. His great-grandson and wife, now Daniel Island

residents, have carefully incorporated these historic pieces not only

into their new, downsized home, but also into their new furniture—

proudly combining their past with their future.

The CH+D team took an afternoon to listen to the fascinating tale of

Gottlieb Rencher and admire the media cabinet that was custom crafted

to exhibit his glass collection. Check out how the piece came to be.
