MESSAGE FROM ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT CHARLES KENNEDYJanuary is always a good time to reflect on what we have accomplished, and where we are going. As you may recall, our theme for 2016 was about service. As I look back at the wonderful work that we have achieved together, I can’t help but notice the numerous ways that you helped to bring out the spirit of service.

The second annual FS Day of Service helped us extend the service we provide each day on campus to the surrounding community. Our Salmon Safe and UW Recycling teams showed us that we could provide great service to the environment as well as great service to our customers. The continued success of our Stepping Stones program taught us what service to each other can mean. In addition, Facilities Employee Services collaborated with the Whole U team to remind us to look after our own health and well-being as part of the second annual FS Health and Wellness fair.

As we look forward to 2017, I am eager to see what we are able to accomplish together. Initiatives concerning customer service, leadership development, and employee recognition will continue to drive our culture of service

forward.

I appreciate the hard work and diligence that each one of you commit to Facilities Services. Thank you again for making 2016 a resounding success.

This year, we renewed our strategy to best fit with the UW’s goals as a world-class university. We developed new measures of success around finding and fixing buildings and grounds needs, focusing care on the spaces and places that mean the most to the campus community, and meeting the new service standards for campus—being quick to respond, available, and informative.

STEPPING STONES FOR SUCCESS PROGRAM 2016

Stepping Stones for Success is a training program offered to front-line staff, giving opportunities to learn leadership skills that are necessary for moving to lead, supervisor, and manager positions. The program consists of a training

component with reading and group exercises, a component focused on each person developing resume and interviewing skills, and a component on practical leadership skills. Thirty-seven FS employees enrolled in Stepping Stones this year.

The latest group of Stepping Stones phase one graduates from Facilities Maintenance & Construction and Campus Engineering & Operations includes Norm Kwasinski (pictured), James Boeckstiegel, Ron Frees, Eric Yerxa, Mark Pekarek, Jeff Kopec, Carl Woods, Erik Brihagen and Theo Schmitz.

The 2016 All Staff Meeting, held in the HUB’s Main Ballroom was a standing-room-only affair, bringing together most employees in FS’ 8 work units. Guest speaker Anne Ardizzone, Alaska Airlines’ Vice President and a UW alum, spoke on the importance of process improvement and employee ideas. Stepping Stones graduates, award nominees and Lean teams were recognized for their achievements.

For the first time, an All Staff Meeting for night-shift employees brought together the FOMS, Lighting & Filter Crew, BSD Project Crew and night shops to celebrate their work. Stepping Stones graduates spoke, as did Nancy Salts, Director of UW’s Health Sciences Academic Services & Facilities.

IMPROVING OUR WORK

SHIP GRANTBSD custodial and recycling employees teamed up with EH&S and Harborview Medical Center to identify tools and techniques to prevent worker injuries. Zeroing in on potential solutions, the team helped design and develop vacuum-backpack harnesses, height-adjustable floor scrapers and brush handles, telescopic “grabbers” and lift devices. The team’s results on repetitive-motion strain are catching the eye of the medical community.

CAMPUS WINDOW WASHING CREWA Lean launch helped the newly formed crew of window washers to come up with a comprehensive plan to address all buildings on campus on a recurring cycle. Visuals, metrics and a strong safety ethic drive this team’s success.

CAMPUS MOVE-OUTUW Recycling and UW Moving teams supported two major events that mark UW students’ end-of-year activities and support waste diversion: SCRAM (Students Cleanup, Recycle and Moveout) and Husky Neighborhood Cleanup. They also worked with the U-District Food Bank, Northwest Center, Real Change, and UW Surplus. Over 26 tons of material was donated by students.

CARPENTERS CREATE VARSITY-CUP CASEOver a storied history, the UW Rowing Teams have brought home national championships, intercollegiate cups, and Olympic Medals to Montlake, many times over. The “Varsity Challenge Cup,” dating back to 1898, has been in UW’s hands often, but not always. UW Coach Michael Callahan commissioned a travel case befitting the ornate trophy. Here, Carpentry Lead Ed McKinley showcases the design and craftsmanship of his team.

CAPTURING THE INTEREST OF OTHERS

Left-to-right: Custodian Nenita Bagaoisan, Interim Vice President Elizabeth Cherry, Custodian Meaza Weldegebriel, President Ana Mari Cauce, Custodian Asma Biru and Custodian Azemera Tefrie.

UW PRESIDENT ANA MARI CAUCE VISITS CUSTODIAL TEAMS For the first-time ever, a sitting University president paid a visit to two Custodial Services teams to learn about their work on process improvements. “The way that a place looks can make such a difference in so many ways,” said University President Ana Mari Cauce. Teams from Odegaard Undergraduate Library (OUGL) and Suzzallo/Allen Library have been huddling daily for over a year. Through this process both teams have found ways to complete work in a more timely fashion, reduce hazards and improve safety, and almost eliminate the number of complaints about their service.

SALMON SAFE RECOGNITIONUW was recertified as a salmon-safe university for the second time, at a ceremony held during the 2016 SustainableUW Festival. This certification entails meeting rigorous standards for irrigation efficiency, stormwater management, pesticide reduction and wetlands area management. Other institutions are now following our lead.

The Salmon Safe project team, including representatives from Salmon Safe, Facilities Services, Athletics, Rec Sports, Capital Planning & Development and others stand with the University’s original certification plaque and this year’s recertification plaque.

HUSKY GREEN AWARDSFinish Carpentry Lead Ed McKinley, IPM and Sustainability Coordinator Daniel Sorensen, and Arborist Sara Shores accepted a Husky Green Award, as a culmination of the week-long Earth Day celebration. The team won for their work with the salvage wood program. This important effort takes trees cut down from campus (diseased or damaged) and uses the wood to make items such as tables, benches and plaques.

UW IS NAMED RECYCLER OF THE YEARUW Recycling staff David Speed, Dean Seaman, Erica Bartlett and Jessica Lisiewski pose with their award from Washington State Recycling Association. The team was recognized for “sustainable materials management, and innovating programs and events.”

STEWARDING UW’S LEGACY

CARING FOR THE CANOE HOUSECarpenters Mike Graham (left) and Tom Allen, FMC Construction, stand with the commemorative bronze plaque after installing it on the side of the historic Canoe House, on the UW Seattle Campus. The plaque, donated by Boys in the Boat author Daniel James Brown, highlights UW’s men’s eight—the crew that won the 1936 Olympic Gold Medal. The installation took place just in time for the annual Windermere Cup, held the first day of boating season.

UTILITIES FOR THE FUTURE Here, the new West Campus Utility Plant is shown at the southwest end of campus. It serves the Animal Research and Care Facility (ARCF), and provides capacity to serve emerging needs as the campus expands.

KEEPING CAMPUS WINDOWS CLEANOur window washers are responsible for the interior and exterior cleaning of all the campus’ windows. Here, Joe Kitka cleans windows on the exterior of the Health Sciences Complex.

POWER PLANT CREWS “TAKE DOWN” THE PLANT’S BOILERS FOR ANNUAL INSPECTION Though decades old, these important components provide heat to campus through combusting natural gas and air under intense pressures, and inspection involves crawling through small cutouts into completely enclosed spaces. Pictured here, Lead Alan Horne inspects the tubes that compose the boiler’s inner walls, looking for bumps and inconsistencies.
